Tight ButtholeParticipantSo now that the dust has settled, Im still trying to make sense out of this draft in regards to what Cleveland came out with.
With the #1 pick, by this point its no secret they selected Anthony Bennett from UNLV. While I cant hate on Bennett for being selected 1st, I question what role he plays with what Cleveland already has going forward.
They already have Tristan Thompson set at the PF spot, with time splits at the 5 between Varejao and Zeller. I was certain all these smokescreens set off towards Bmac, Oladipo, Noel, Len and Bennett, that Noel or Len were the clear-cut favorite to fill a slot and need. Len would have filled the long-term, hopeful Center spot. Noel would have been the C/PF paint protector, as Celeveland was last in the league in point in the paint defense efficiency. Or Bmac would have filled in at that 3guard front that GS displayed with some success. But they go with Bennett.
I honestly dont know how to feel or react. 2 years ago there was a split between people on Irving/WIlliams. Cleveland obviously made the right choice with Irving, but still made trade offers to try to get Williams that were obviously unsuccessful, My question is, did Cleveland get their 3/4 tweener they coveted in Williams? Is it worth it?They then select Sergey Karasev at #19 to fill the obvious hole at SF. While this has been slated for weeks, and with rumors of them even trying to trade up for him with Dallas at 13, it seems they got their guy going forward with no intention to let him sit overseas and to bring him over immediately.
Fast forward to the 2nd round:
#31 Cleveland selects Allen Crabbe, who could arguably have been a 1st round selection. I wont argue this value pick……yet
#33 Cleveland selects Carrick Felix. While I wish I could pretend to know this guy is, i dont. I know the 2 other Zona prospects in the draft, while completely unfamiliar with Felix.
But Cleveland trades away Crabbe to Portland for 2 future 2nd rounders. And Cleveland passes on Tony Mitchell, Jamal Franklin, Nate Wolters, Glen Rice Jr, Ricky Ledo to make way for Felix. This is already reminding me of last years draft in everything Cleveland passed up to settle with their selection in TZeller.
Call me naive, but the upside, holes filled, the contributing factors that all of the pre-mentioned prospects named could have filled a bigger role on a non-guaranteed contract opposed to Felix. At the very least, Franklin and Mitchell could have been placed in Canton on Cleveland’s DLeague team to develop, or at the very least, prove that they arent worth a flier on a repeat lottery team.
Soooooooo………
Was Cleveland justified in drafting Bennett #1 with no obvious hole to fill, no necessary role on the team in regards to position?
Was Karasev the right choice at #19 with all the more developed options ready to select in place of?
Should Cleveland have done a better job in the 2nd round, especially considering the options available, the holes needed to fill, and that Cleveland has a DLeague team specifically designed to develop their talent? Please talk me of the ledge

theballerwayParticipantBennet actually talks about his role being a strtch and face up 4 in the NBA with 3 as a match up option down the road . From what I read Mike Brown really liked Bennett so I guess he feels he can defend someone at which position we shall see though.
Loved the pick btw.
I f I didnt despise Dan gilbert Id root for these cavs as I appreciate Waiters too.

Tight ButtholeParticipantAt 6’8, 260lbs and not named Lebron James, I’m going to go ahead and scratch him from that 3 spot.

nick5354ParticipantDoes anyone have any idea on what Grant said about the pick? Has he come out and said they are trying to make him a 3, or will he play majority at the 4?
I am not so angry as a Cavs supporter. I was pissed off when they reached for TT and Waiters but they have proven me wrong, espeically Waiters. He looks to be a 20ppg scorer in this league and when picked many Cavs fans were angry. I am not going to make the same mistake and write Bennett off, but just shocked as we already had a few bigmen and TT looked to be our PF of the future. I think they might view TT as a Center in the league maybe, and when Andy V is gone have a line up of KI, Waiters, Gee or Karasev, Bennett and TT.
I actually don’t mind the way they drafted in the first round. KI and Waiters are so good going to the rim and penetrating. This draft adds a SF to stand on the arc, hit 3s, mid range and hit shots from kick outs. With this shooting touch, it helps compliment the games of KI and Waiters. Bennett helps to compliment this penetrating ability by the Cavs starting gaurds as he has a nice shooting stroke as well. Let’s not forget he went .375% from the arc which is great to come into the league. He also has a great mid range face up game which helps out the cavs guards and allows them to use pick and rolls or pick and pops.
He is also a good rebounder which is great to pair with Andy V and TT who are GREAT on the boards. Overall, I think it helps the Cavs in mixing it up, and playing many different line ups.
They could play line ups like;
KI, Karasev, Bennett,TT and Andy V.
Waiters, Karasev, Bennett, TT and Andy V.
KI, Waiters, Karasev, Bennett and TT.
KI, Waiters, Karasev, TT Andy V.These are just a couple of line ups with the new additions. It adds a lot of variation and allows Mike Brown to mix it up.
They have so many options and I think surrounding two penetrating guards with good shooters, offensive players is great.
I remember watching KI and Andy V play the two man game a lot and play many pick and pops. Andy Vs jumper was so shakey it just didn’t work. Having Bennett to play the two man game with KI will be fun to watch.
All in all, I am actually pretty happy with the picks, and in a draft with no must have 1st pick why not add a great versatile big men who has just as much chance to be the best player in this draft.
