The8thDeadlySinParticipantChuck said that Tim Duncan should retire.. I think this is stupid…
Sure, Duncan isnt what he used to be. However, he is still the 3rd best player on a team that coud have won the championship. He is still a legit post player and a smart player. If Duncan was not on this Spurs team, they wouldnt have made the playoffs.. Duncan makes everyone on his team better.
I think the reason they didnt advansce is because they let the Thunder, a very streaky team, get hot. They let them win 3 games in a row and they let them come from behind to win in 2 of those games.. If 2 calls go a different way or 2 shots were missed, we are saying that the Spurs still got it.. Since they got beat by one of the hottest teams in the league, Chuck says their HOF PF needs to retire..
What are your thoughts on this?

sheltwon3ParticipantChucks is stupid. Duncan should play until he feels like he is done because he is still better than most big men. Also I am sure this lock out hurt a lot of teams but in a regular season, he would play 30 31 minutes a game. Spurs are deep enough to do this.

IndianaBasketballParticipantNot only is Tim Duncan not going to retire… He’s probably about to sign an extention for another 2 years.
Barkely is an idiot at times.

bloodshyParticipant"If Duncan was not on this Spurs team, they wouldnt have made the playoffs.."
First, I’m pretty sure w/Parker leading the way, this team was making the post season. The Spurs played well when Timmy missed games. Additionally, the Spurs bench averaged 45ppg this year, torching the rest of the league. At the end of the day, I don’t see a team coached by Pop and led by Parker not making the playoffs, especially considering the amazing supporting cast they have in SA.
Second, Timmy was paid $21M this year. What kind of team could the Spurs have had if that cash had been available? In my opinion, $21M could have gotten them much better production than Timmy gave this season.
I’m not saying Timmy should retire, but the Spurs now have a chance to improve. If they re-sign Timmy it should be for around $5M, so they can bring in more talent to compete w/the Thunder. If Timmy is demanding $10M+ it will not be in the Spurs interest to re-sign him. Therefore, I’m hoping the Spurs pay him a Kobe-like contract over the next five years. I’d love for the Spurs to not block my team’s way in the west anymore.

I just think that Duncan was a huge reason that Parker was so good this year. Without Duncan, teams would have been able to put more emphasis on guarding Parker..
I do agree with you that with the 21 million they were paying him this year, they could have gotten more production else where. But they should be able to change that next year, like you said, and get more players..

TallmanNYCParticipantHe should accept a pay cut, but he is clearly still a high level starting power forward in the NBA. As long as he doesn’t care about dimineshing his career stat averages (and I think those numbers are meaningless), he should stay in the league as long as he and the Spurs want him to. He is durable and productive with many ways to contribute for a win. He will hurt his career numbers, but he is still going straight into the hall of fame and is on every person’s short list for best PF ever no matter how the next few year work out.
By the way, how cool would it be if he played for league minimum allowing the Spurs to sign a meaningful free agent?

DondiJohnParticipantIf it will happen. Spurs need size, especially in the C position with Duncan near retirement. Most of the promising Centers are restricted free agents (Hibbert and Lopez) so any offer can be matched by their original team. One player I’d like the Spurs to grab is Michael Beasley, he’s also a restricted free agent but I doubt Minny is going to match any offer. Also, Chris Kaman for 2-3 year contract wouldn’t hurt also.
