surveParticipantI will let you guys take this one because when I was growing up there was no AAU circuit. So I am not totally familiar with everything that goes on behind the scenes with it.
I remember Doc Rivers said that the All-American games were the first time he got to see the other best players or play against them….he mentioned his contemporary Derek Harper.
AAU relationships between players and coaches can be the determining factor in deciding a college.
Some relationships have benefitted recruiting. Calipari. Some non-relationships have been detrimental to recruiting. Gary Williams.
AAU can be the determining factor in a school hiring an assistant in hopes to lure in a top recruit. I believe this was the case with Baylor and John Wall.
What are you guys take on The AAU Circuit and its impact on college basketball?

NbanflguyParticipantI dont really know what its impact is in college basketball, but I know as a player, AAU is fun as hell. It is so fun traveling to different places with your team to take on the good players from your state or region.

aamir543ParticipantWell, this is my first summer AAU season, I’m excited, we’re supposed to go to Reno in about a month, but one thing that I object to is this whole buddy buddy attitude. I love baketball and believe it’s supposed to be played with respect, but when a game starts you have no friends on the other side. I remember in 8th grade our star player was hanging out with his buddies for a whole half hour before the game. As a guy with a sort fo Kendrick Perkins like deneamor, that pised me off. We ended up losing by like 20, and when we played them in the playoffs, our coach made sure that he didn’t socialize before the game. I love the passion that guys like Perkins, Dirk, KG, and even Kobe have in games. They show the intensity needed, and with all of these AAU guys, they all seem like friends joking around, and now I’m sure we’ll see plenty of top recruits texting and chatting an hanging out with each other as they go to All-American stuff, and go to look for colleges.

NbanflguyParticipantYeah aamir I agree whole heartedly. The opponents are not my friends once the ball is jumped. In fact, if I actually have a friend on the other side that motivates me a little more to make sure I beat him.
Good luck this season. You will have a blast.

aamir543Participant^Wait, the soldiers? Me and a friend of mine were talking about them just the other day. He’s not that good(the poor guy has mild autism, he’s normal, but he’s just relly slow at picking things up) and apparently his dad made a varsity AAU team, and he was telling me they were going to play them, and that they’re probably going to get killed against them. There is this one kid, Trevor Dunbar, I’ve seen him play, that kid can BALL. He’s short, but he has range, can drive, and is a really good defender.

paradigmnParticipantThe EARLY #1 AAU team in the nation….17U Oakland Soldiers look to be a solid squad.
Led by two Top 10 players in the Class of 2013 Aaron Gordon & Jabari Bird.
Here is a "Military Themed" article about the Oakland Soldiers: http://prospect-central.blogspot.com/2012/04/oakland-soldiers-early-favorite-for-1.html

ChewyParticipantthere were so many more "elite" teams. In Illinois specifically, cuz thats the only area I feel confident speaking on, there were about 6 to 8 different teams with D1 players on it. The top two teams would have like 5 or 6 d1players and teams 7 and 8 would have like one d1 player playing with his local hs friends. Addidas, Reebok (before it was bought out) and Nike each had 2 or 3 teams in the state that is sponsored.
Now you see alot more super teams. Illinois has Mac Irvin Fire which has like 12 d1 players and the rest of the teams in the state don’t even compare. Now shoe companies are usually only supporting one team per state (again this could be different outside of IL) and trying to monopolize the talent into one team.
Also, back when I played the tournaments were set up in a "normal" set up where the top teams each were in different brackets and would then meet up in the playoffs after pool play. Now some tournaments are just setting up a "super group" right off the bat to make sure the top talent plays each other early and often.
Just a few things I could think of… hope it helps

surveParticipantso guys….can you think of some players off the top of your heads that played for a team that had one brand and signed to a school that was endorced by a different brand?
the shoe deals are ridiculous. I remember all the stuff Amare went through with Raveling and the whole Nike/Adidas thing.
