Trying to beat the clock for one of their youngest and most talented core players, the Boston Celtics were in contact Monday evening with the agent for starting point guard Rajon Rondo, according to a league source, in hopes of reaching agreement on a long-term contract before the Oct. 31 league deadline for negotiating extensions with members of the 2006 draft class.

The meeting between the Celtics and Rondo’s agent, Bill Duffy, came after two weeks of relatively amiable discussions about the parameters of a new deal for the 23-year-old Rondo, who has become one of the league’s better young point guards despite periods of occasional drift and clashing with Coach Doc Rivers. But the discussions haven’t yet led to a consensus on how to pay Rondo in a potential five-year deal. Rondo and Duffy are seeking a maximum or near-max contract that would pay him between $80 and $85 million; the Celtics are loath to put anything near that much into Rondo, given their existing expenditures for star players like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

If Rondo doesn’t sign by Oct. 31, he would become a restricted free agent next summer. The Celtics would still have the right ot match any offer for him, but would run the risk of exposing Rondo when several teams have cleared or are planning to clear huge amounts of money under the salary cap to go after next summer’s huge free agent class.

WEEI Radio in Boston reported Monday afternoon that the Celtics were planning to make a major offer for Rondo, who starred in Boston’s epic first-round playoff series with the Bulls, nearly averaging a triple-double in the seven-game series.

The Celtics were also waiting on Monday for results of a second opinion on the right thumb injury suffered by backup center Glen Davis, who reportedly suffered the injury in an off-court altercation with a former teammate of his Sunday. “It doesn’t look good,” said a league source. The Celtics were hopeful that Davis hasn’t fractured his thumb; if he did, surgery would be required and Davis would likely miss several months, if not the entire season.

Davis, who stepped up his play in last season’s playoffs as a starter for the injured Kevin Garnett, re-signed with Boston this summer after failing to get signifcant offers as a restricted free agent. Forward Shelden Williams, a late pickup by the Celtics during the offseason, would take the majority of Davis’s minutes.

I dont think he deserves the Max but I feel like yall are being hard on Rondo. IMO, he is one of the top 5 PGs in the NBA. In no order, as of now, My list looks like Paul, Williams, Parker, Rondo, Billups. Guys that could break in this year are Rose, Harris, and Westbrook. I mean think about it, what is Rondo bad at? Shooting?? There are plenty of great PGs that were very average shooters. While his is not a great shooter, he is still a capable scorer. He is a great defender, great rebounder, and great playmaker. The HOF guys that he plays with call him great. They have played with lots of PGs in their careers so they know talent. He doesnt deserve the Max deal but he deserves some money.

off the celtics and rondo is no more than an above average pg. I like rondo’s game but that kind of money for rondo is unbealivable.

IDK about that man. He was really good at Kentucky and he is still a great defender and can still get to the basket. His assist would be the only think I could see going down if he left the C’s. But think about it, if he played for the Kings, the worst team in the league, his scoring would increase like crazy and he would still be getting assist from drive and kick or drive and dump plays. He would still be an excellent defender and might even improve his jumper because of the demand.

i’ve said this before about Rondo, and I’ll say it again. Dude is overrated. You say that his only weakness is his shooting, but what you have to understand is that his shooting is so bad, that teams can play off him and basically play all the celtics stars while leaving rondo open. This is a very big deal. And half the time he get’s into the lane, it’s because teams are playing off him or playing him for the pass. You don’t see teams locking in trying to shut down rondo. There are a number of pg’s who can trade places with him and the celtics would be just as good if not better. Put him on the Bucks or the Kings and see if he is max level all-star. Yeah he put up great numbers in the playoffs, but Rose was getting his too at the other end. If rondo was so good, then how come MoWill, DHarris, and JNelson all made the all-star team ahed of him in the east? And I’ll add Rose and Arenas to the list of eastern gaurds that will pass him this next year. Out west, Paul, DWill, Parker, Billups, Nash are all better. Especially with this economy, you really think some team is gonna throw a max deal at rondo? I would pay him about 10 mill per which is what guys like Kevin Martin are getting.

The reason he wasnt an allstar is because 3 other guys on his team made it. But you are right about his shooting. It is awful and I said he doenst deserve the Max contract. IMO, he is a 7-8 million dollar player. Wouldnt sign him for more than 3 years also. I would demand that he get better at shooting if he wants another contract. Who would fit this team better than Rondo?? The guy is going to have to be very unselfish and a great defender to make up for Allen and Pierce on D. He cant want shots because they are all going to Allen, Pierce, Garnette, Davis, Wallace, House, Daniels, and then the guy.

ALL RONDO HAS TO DO IS
push the gas and be a THREAT to score in transition. THis is how he draws defenders

Plus u forget about his DEFENSE

Jameer Nelson>> what if HE played on the Bucks/Kings?? hes good but he isn’t the defender that Rondo is
Devin Harris>>> he would take shots from the Big 3 but he is a taller PG and gets his shot off more

Mo Williams>> shooter more than a pure passer

Rondo is one of the only YOUNG pgs in the game that can be a THREAT to score
with his passing AND plays DEFENSE; he fits the Celtics perfectly imo but the Suns should have never traded him

I think Rondo not shooting is overrated. The “best” shooters shoot about 40% from 3 on volume shots and 60% of the time they BRICK.

They say if u do 1 thing well then u can make it 2 the NBA eg JJ Reddick
if Rondo does 1 thing bad, then isn’t that a DOUBLE STANDARD?

sure JJ reddick can learn to dribble and pass, but then why can’t Rondo put the time and work in and learn to shoot.

a certain HOF couldn’t shoot and had big hands his first cupl of years but his ability to affect the game in off of DEFENSE and TRANSITION were underestimated.

I think u guys r underestimating that Rondo has only ONE weakness. How many PGs do u know can say have size, strength, rebounding, passing, etc.

Just like Derrick Rose/Tyreke Evans when he gets his jump shot Rondo will be UNGUARDABLE.

    VERY good prospect.

i never said he couldn’t play well and at a high level. I do believe he is about the 9th or 10th best pg in the league. but when teams play against a Dwill, Parker, Paul, Harris, Rose, Arenas, Nash, etc. they are focusing on stopping them. Imagine if those guys played where opponents weren’t really concerned about stopping them and left them alone…they would be putting up crazy numbers. Conversly, if rondo went somewhere where teams locked in on him, I don’t think he would have anywhere near the impact that he does.

none. I’ve always said rondo was the best defensive pg with maybe westbrook making a move in the near future.

westbrook is a good one, i don’t think he’ll ever straighten out his pullup jumper though,

I’m not predicting westbrook to ever be a star, but his defense is legit. He can compete with rondo for best defensive pg in a year or two.

    yeah I agree
the thing is personally I don’t really like comparing PGs unless they’re on a WINNING team
because NOBODY talks about pgs/players that lose>>> Durant, Nash, Baron Davis (although Davis did admit he sucked last year)

As a guard its hard to dominate the game because high percentage shots don’t come by very often>>>
PGs typically can’t get to the rack like Lebron/Brandon Roy

In todays NBA without a big man rebounding AND a high percentage shooter, u wont win a lot of games>>Bynum, Gasol, Garnett, Howard, Duncan, Lebron, Roy

If Westbrook and Durant had an ADeQUATE big man like say Perkins then the media is all over their jocks in a snap

Roy got $80 million, Aldridge got $65/70 million and Bargnani got $50 million. How much is Rondo worth then? He has a championship ring and has shown the ability to play in big games. I mean, regardless if anyone thinks he’s overrated or not… Dude played HUGE during the playoffs last season and the Celtics players/coaches have been raving about him this summer/pre-season.

He’s not worth and won’t get the max, but he won’t get less than $50 million. If they don’t get him signed, then they’ll pay the price because some team will throw a good chunk of change at him next summer.

Rondo’s attitude has been a subject of discussion, but a lot not all big players are primadonnas,
NBA is a business and a lot of successful business people have a bit of an arrogance to them
so I would say let Rondo explore free agency IF he thinks he’s THAT good
but I’m bias when it comes to NBA Pgs 😉

I’m surprised Barganni got 10 mill per. I also read the raptors were real excited he accepted the offer like as if they didn’t think that would be enough to keep him. I think Bryan Cloangelo might be smoking something up there in toronto because that dude is not likely to ever be an all-star.

One of you mentioned that Rondo started at Kentucky. That is true. He also got benched in favor of a scrub. Though that wasn’t necessarily all about ability, some of that had to do with his attitude and it seems some of the other guys actually responded fairly well to the move.

With that said, as long as he doesn’t get hurt he it’s not a bad move to not sign the extension. He can test out his luck. There will be lots of teams with money in 2010. Who says someone won’t overrate how good he is or throw lots of cash at him if they don’t land any of the top guys? It happens all the time. Some guys look great because of the system, the team is coming off a championship or because of the players around them and then they get paid more than they are worth. Worst case he resigns with the Celtics and there won’t be any hard feelings and he still gets paid, best case he goes wherever he wants and gets paid what he wants or close to it. Lamarcus Aldridge just got a pretty nice deal. In my opinion, despite Rondo’s deficiencies, he is worth a lot more than a non rebounding, poor defensive, soft power forward.

I think rondo should get kirk hinrich money, not max but 10-11 million. If I were him Id take the money and run! hes a restricted-free agent next year the celtics will need to spend their money somewhere else if he doesnt take it now

If he ever gets a legit perimeter game than he could be top 5.
Tonight he had 8 pts, 10 assits only 2 TO’s, 6 rebs pretty good but he’s not worth Max.

Rondo is not worth a max contract he doesnt have a consistent jump shot defenders leave him open daring him to shoot he is a product of having hall of fame players on his team I think u could put just about any decent pg in his position and they wuld do teh same thing he is doing he does play good defense though but that is not wrtha max contract.
