Chris Broussard tweeted a little bit ago that Cavs, T-Wolves, and Pistons are discussing a potential trade.. Cavs would use trade exception to absorb Rip Hamilton’s contract, in return Detroit sends the Cavs their 8th pick.. Cavs package 8th and 4th picks to Minnesota for the #2 pick.. That way they can draft Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams..

The trade exception to the Pistons was discussed on the trade deadline, but never fell through.. Obviously trade makes a lot of sense for Cavs, and I think Minnesota is really winning here as well.. They move down to spots, and can most likely still get their guy (Kanter) who they would have drafted 2nd anyway, and pick up the 8th pick for basically nothing.. Even if Jazz jump on Kanter, Minnesota can draft Knight 4th, and look at a 2(Burks?) with the 8th pick, or one of the big Euros might drop.. Pistons obvioulsy only benefit by clearing cap space..

Sounds like a good trade for all involved. Rumors are that rip would be bought out by the cavs making him a free agent and the bulls are already the front runner to sign him. This should happen.

This looks like a terrific trade for all the teams. Pistons want to get rid of Hamiltons contract and giving up the 8th pick in a very weak draft  isnt a bad choice. The Wolves get to trade down and not be forced to take the player they want too high and get the 8th pick as well. The Cavs would pretty much be buying the 2nd pick just like they did the first one. Its pretty awesome that the Cavs would have successfully bought the 1st and 2nd overall picks instead of just being a normal cheap lottery team that would have been picking 4th overall otherwise. I like this for everyone! Cleveland gets their stars, though lets see how that impacts JJ Hickson if they get Williams- will they trade Hickson? Detroit gets rid of Hamilton, even if it costs them a draft pick; but it’s a relatively weak draft anyways, so that’s ok. The Wolves get #4 and #8, which they’d probably use to select Kanter/Valanciunas and Burks, which would finally give the Wolves a legit 2 and 5. Good deal all around! No way in hell Kahn came up with that one, lol

 Sounds logical for all teams, but not as sweet for Detroit….to give up #8 to shed a contract seems steep….maybe Cavs or more likely Wolves can throw in a kicker….Ellenson or Gibson?

 This is a good move for the pistons even if they dont get anybody in return. It will be almost impossible to get rid of richard hamiltons contract next year without taking on another bad contract and the last thing the pistons need is another bad contract. Plus Rip is going to be a serious chemistry problem if he is still on the bench getting no playing time.

 What is with everyone thinking Knight is gonna go so high. He will fall to Sac-town IMO. ANd I see absolutly no reason why the Wolves would take him at 4 when they still have Flynn, RIdnour, and trying desperately to bring Rubio over. What kind of message would that send Ricky when they already sent a bad message by drafting Flynn just behing him. Doesn’t seem logical to me. IMO, they’d go Burks and Biyambo or Valanciunas. They really need to stop loading up on young talent. They need to start getting servicable young vets for all these useless young pieces they’ve got. Half of witch don’t fit the triangle principles anyways.

Remeber also that if Minni is to trade 2nd pick, sure they’re going to get 4th and 8th but they still want to hget good young players from the trade and Will Bynum is that.

Now you see that Cleveland trades Ramon Sessions, that’s because with the top 2 picks they are probably going to get Irving, an athlectic young PG anyway.

I think that 8th pick would be more valuable to Detroit than getting rid of a bad contract…plus, theyre basically GIVING Rip away…and saying "here take this too" with the 8th pick, they could get more value for Rip, hes not totally washed up, yet..

The Clippers gave up what they thought would be a 8-10 pick for around $14 million dollars saved on Davis’ contract.

The Pistons are making out like bandits in this deal.

Not gonna happen. This trade is great for Minesota, so Kahn wont let it happen. If Cleveland gets the 8, I think they should keep the 4 and 8. If the word is that the Jazz will take Knight at three, than they would get DWill or Kanter. And at 8, they could get another piece to their rebuilding project. (Maybe Biyombo or Vesly or Donatas)

This trade looks real good from all perspectives. Magic Knick, Rip definetely isn’t washed up, but dumping him is what Detroit must resort to, because Dumars couldn’t pull the trigger for so long. Lets not forget just how low he sunk last year, and the major chemistry issues he was having there. Cavs get a good deal, Minnesota makes out decent, and Detroit sheds Rip’s contract. Honestly though, I could see the Cavs taking Kanter 2, and hoping to grab one of the forwards next year, though that surely would be risky.

Should they take Williams or Kanter?

And do they see Williams as a 3 or 4, because Hickson figures to be a core piece for the future, and he’s solid at PF. Certainly a team devoid of talent like the Cavs shouldn’t worry about positions, but it all depends on Chris Grant’s long-term vision and plan.

Yeah unfortunately because of the current economic climate for the Pistons franchise and the city of Detroit in general, getting rid of Rip’s contract is far more more important to the franchise than keeping the 8th pick. If someone will take his contract they have to give up their pick, lucky for them it’s not a top 5 pick and it’s a relatively weak draft past the top 3 players. Another team who could potentially swing a deal is Washington. They can absorb RIP’s contract even without an exception plus even if they didnt’ buy out RIP, the fans in Washington still love him and he could tutor players for a year. Wizards did the exact same thing last year. Bulls wanted to be free agent players so they traded Kirk Hinrich and pick #17(Kevin Seraphin) for the rights of Vladamir Veremeenko a guy who will never play in the league. The Wizards would then have the ammo to move up and grab Kanter plus still keep their 18th pick to draft a SF. They are unlikely to be free agent players this year unless they want to try to pry out Jeff Green but still, they would be willing to take on Rips salary for a year if they could get another top 10 pick, that would mean that RIPs 12 mil would come off the books the following season(could even become a trade chip as an expiring contract), and the Wizards have an early buyout option with Rashard Lewis after next season which wouldn’t have to pay him the full value of his final year.

Top 3 picks are infinately more valuable then top 5 and top 10 picks. 

In the past whenever a team has traded down from a top 3 pick it has come back to hurt them.  

Some Recent examples include. 

2008 OJ Mayo, for Kevin Love. worked out badly for both teams. memphis got the lesser player in mayo, had to take on a massively bad contract, though they did get adrianne lima, and because the had a SG they took Hasheem Thabeet over tyreeke Evans and James Harden, who both might be better then mayo. 

2006 Chicago trade Pick 2 LaMarcus Aldridge for Tyrus Thomas and a future 2nd round pick

2005 Portland Trade Pick 3 Derron Williams for Martel Webster, and not much else

2001 Clippers trade pick 2 Tyson Chandler for elton brand this is pretty even but i would rather have chandler then brand

Also If Cleveland waits till after the draft, Detroit will still be in financial trouble and they do the same deal rip for a trade exception, except the pick would be in next years better draft. Letting cleveland keep pick 4 and have another chance next year at Harrison barnes, Perry Jones, Jarred sullinger and whoever else will be the best of next years class

If you actually played him 30-35 mins a night and kept him happy, he would of produced decent stats and be worth alot more….Rip is a former all-star and can still produce

The Pistons are a Major Mess right now and their entire team needs a Overhaul…Only when they have an identity ,do have a winning team..So Dumars must decide which direction he wants the team to go..Dumars screwed up the moment he used the team’s free agent money on Gordon & Charlie V…Then not getting involved when the coach alienated the veterans on the team…
