The Cavs are offering their two 2nd round picks in this year’s draft for Paul Pierce. Wow. Only way I see this actually happening is if the Celtics really go all-out with their rebuilding. I highly doubt it though. I’m also assuming that KG will retire if this transpires. I have to give credit to the Cavs though for having the balls to offer this trade for a (still productive, albeit aging) future Hall of Famer.

Paul Pierce is an expiring contract, so I would really love this for the Cavs – it’s a massive upgrade over whoever they have or can draft and a great veteran presence, plus it doesn’t create any salary cap problems in the long term.

I don’t believe this is a good move for either teams long term goals. If you think about it from Cavs view theyd be selling 2 pick s just for a 1st rd exit maybe 2nd cuz lets be real unless other mover are made adding pierce isn’t puttin them in tiers with heat or even pacers, bulls, knicks where they could still play young and possibly cash in on another lottery trip in a much stronger draft class next year then the Celtics could cash Pierce contract in for more value like 1st rd pick along with an asset.

Players need play-off experience, it speeds up the learning process (see for example Leonard (SAS), George (IND) or Butler (CHI). So getting Pierce who could guide the young Cav’s into their first playoffs would be a very, very wise move.

It all depends on Boston’s goals and rebuilding plans. If they are planning to buy Pierce out then two 2nd round picks isn’t a bad deal instead of buying him out for 5million. He obviously isn’t the player he was once, but he can still contribute. There will be other offers, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him retire as a Celtic….but maybe they want to completely rebuild?

You just can’t do Paul Pierce like that. There were times during his career were he could have asked to be traded, or embellished an injury to stay off the court, but he always showed up for the Celtics. The only time I was ever disappointed in Pierce’s career was when the Celtics went 17-65, and he said he might have to move on if we didn’t start to turn things around. We all know what that led to.

With loyalty aside, I still think this is a terrible trade. You can’t rebuild will lower end picks, especially in a week draft. Pierce still had a good year, and was the focal point of the offense. What ever team he goes to isn’t going to be asking him to carry the weight of the team, and he could still be an ultimate role player for a few more years. Two second round picks just isn’t enough.

I think the people who think they should still try to build a contended need to wake up. Out problems for the last couple of years have been scoring and another big man to battle down low with KG. Now their isn’t even KG, and the offense is still a bummer. How in the world do you effectively turn that around? If the team had a blossoming young center, Rondo, and Green, I might agree, but the Celtics still need a lot of ammunition if they seriously want to get back up from this fall. With a new coach and all I think it is time to start over from nothing (Keep Avery and Green), and Pierce should get the honor of choosing what he wants to do.

The Cavs, bearing injury, are going to be in the playoff race next year, and who would you rather have mentoring your young team then Paul Pierce? The guy is easily one of the top players of this generation, and could really help groom some of the young players on the Cavs, who aren’t winning a title next year and probably won’t even be in lottery. All young teams need a mentor while rebuilding. That’s what separates the real winners from the Sacramento Kings.
