IMO, that would really hurt the Clippers. Melo is selfish and a horrible defender, he would greatly hurt the effectiveness of Chris Paul because he wouldn’t let Chris Paul create, he just wants to shoot.

Blake Griffin one of the most over rated players in the game right now. The Clippers are one of the most over rated teams in the league (along with the Warriors), check out the Clippers game vs. the Spurs yesterday. Bringing in Melo would only hurt the team (and let’s face it, Melo is NOT a superstar but he is a star). I wouldn’t even consider Griffin in the top 5 PF right now in the league and I don’t think Griffin for Melo would be fair on the Knicks end. I think something a little more like Dudley and Griffin going to the Knicks would be better.

Which 5 PFs do you think are better then Blake Griffin?

I would probably have him 4th, behind Love, Aldridge and Anthony Davis.

I don’t understand why Carmelo gets so much flack. I think that it stems from the fact that he’s from the same draft class as LeBron James a player he is most commonly compared to. While I do understand that Melo is not as good as LeBron he’s not alone since LeBron is one of the greatest players of all time. It’s starting to get to a point where people who don’t watch him play are just making up stupid things about his game that absolutely aren’t true. People act like he hasn’t been one of the AT LEAST top ten players to have come in the NBA in the past 14 years.

He does jack up bad shots that much is true. Guess what though so does damn near every other superstar. (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant) Also people try to say that he isn’t a winner. You do realize that he’s had way more team success than the majority of players who are supposedly better than him. Carmelo Anthony has led his team to the playoffs EVERY YEAR and outside of this season of course he has always had a winning record during the regular season unlike Kevin Love, Paul George, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Paul etc, etc. That isn’t to take credit away from any of those guys but it’s the truth. Chris Paul has never even made it past the 2nd round. But for some reason those guys are far and away much better than him.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but Carmelo Anthony is one the best players of his era and a Superstar and there is no evidence that people can make to dispute that claim.

I for one don’t really enjoy Carmelo Anthony.

It has nothing to do what so ever with when he got drafted.

His shot jacking is so much more blatant and diliberate than someone like Wade. And LBJ isn’r really a shot jacker at all, he makes everyone else on the floor better.

Kobe is too a shot jacker of epic porportions, but Kobe won NBA titles, hence why this is acceptable.

You are right that Melo has made the playoffs every year. But most good players do. Paul George has made the playoffs every year of his career, but still someone like him isn’t a good example because he has had such a meteoric rise.

I don’t really think it matters if a player made the playoffs his first or second year in the league or not, but in the case of Kevin Love it is an issue, and an issue people acknowledge.

Paul has never made it past the 2nd round, and unlike most I would put Paul in a similar catergory as Melo. He seems to get a lot of "third fiddle MVP hype", but I really don’t see it. He is a very good player, is a great passer, and has some killer games. He also has off nights and doesn’t ever seem to have a game vs a a Lebron or a Durant, or even Rose and Westbrook when they were healthy where he looked like the best player on the floor.

Making it past the 1st round once, isn’t much better than never making it past the 2nd.

Melo is a phenomenal scorer, and is a good player. He is a second tier star and will probably never be the best player on a championship team. That’s really it.

I guess I should’ve made it clearer. When I said that LeBron jacks shots I meant that from time to time he will jack some questionable shots just like any superstar. But for you to say that Melo is just a "good" player is just rididculous. I can’t think of that many players in this day and age that I would say are better than Melo. I would question his leadership for sure no doubt about it. But one thing that I’ve noticed about Melo is that whenever he has a PG next to him that also happens to be a great leader (Chauncey Billups, Jason Kidd) he and the team does great. I do think that if he wins a championship he would be the best player but not necessarily the leader of the team. It’s almost in the same sense that while I do believe that LeBron is far and away the best player on the Miami Heat the team is still Dwyane Wade’s team.

Also Kobe’s shot jacking is only acceptable when he plays on a team with Shaq, Pau Gasol, or Andrew Bynum. He’s a great player but what about the seasons where he killed his team by jacking shots. But just because he’s won championships it makes it ok. There was a time span from 2004-07 where he had one losing season and 2 straight seasons of getting knocked off by the Phoenix Suns in the first round. Those championship teams he played for were so well rounded and balanced that it made it ok for him to jack shots because of the good players around him and the great rebounding from the team. Whos’s to say that if Carmelo played on those teams that he wouldn’t win a championship either. (Obviously that is up for debate I’m not saying he would win)

I don’t think Kobe isn’t guilty of being a ball hog. But when you WIN TITLES, that makes it hard to argue with. He played on good teams, but the last 2 rings he was clearly the best player.

I think right now there are a lot of players that most would take over Melo. Look at this trade. Griffin is the 3rd or 4th best power forward in the league and Clipper fans are laughing at this rumor.

I great player shouldn’t have to play with a great leader to win playoff series.

And PS, the Heat aren’t Wade’s team. Lebron is the best player. Lebron is the leader. It’s not close.

"And PS, the Heat aren’t Wade’s team. LeBron is the best player. LeBron is the leader. It’s not close.

I guess using that same logic LeBron shouldn’t have left Cleveland. Yes he did make it to the NBA Finals once with a team of scrubs just like Allen Iverson but since he’s so great he should do that all the time instead of getting knocked off in the 2nd round time and time again. I guess he shoudn’t have left with Chris Bosh to play with Dwyane Wade a guy who led his team to the ECF and to the Finals just to win his championships. That logic is to be quite frank "stupid" I don’t mean to take what the Heat have done away from them point I’m trying to prove a point that great players do need great leaders, and other great players to win championships which Melo hasn’t had.

The best player Melo ever had playing with him was Allen Iverson who was at that time on the edge of falling off and he also played with him for a 1 1/2 seasons. But guys like Jason Kidd, and Chauncey Billups had a great impact on him in getting him to buy into a teamwork type of system and trusting his teammates. Kind of hard to do that when the 2nd best player on your team has been hurt for the majority of the season and has no other skills outside of being a decent rebounder and rim protector (over-paid, glorified role player), when J.R. Smith jacks and hits no shots whatsoever, Iman Shumpert can’t score to save his life (although he has had a good stretch these past 3 games), Andrea Bargnani can get you about 14ppg but can’t rebound or defend to save his life for a 7 footer who’s a pretty decent athlete. And Amare Stoudemire a guy who you were dead set on playing with has glass knees and should retire.

"I don’t think that Kobe isn’t guilty of being a ball hog. But when you WIN TITLES it’s kind of hard to argue."

I hate that logic also strictly due to the fact that if Kobe played on the teams Carmelo has played on he wouldn’t have ever won a championship. You forget that he played on GREAT TEAMS that allowed him to do what he did. Even the first 3 championships that he won it’s debatable whether or not he was the best player and he wasn’t the leader on those teams. THATS HOW GOOD THOSE TEAMS WERE!!! Do you see the theme here??

When Kobe played with a bunch of bum ass players and the best players he had with him was a sensitive and teenaged Andrew Bynum and an Un-Confident Lamar Odom he was able to drag that team to 2 first round exits barely winning over 41 games in the regular season and 1 losing season. BY CHUCKING SHOTS!!!

What about D-Wade who before LeBron and Bosh came to town who CHUCKED SHOTS because he didn’t have a choice in those 3 seasons he lead the Miami Heat to 1 losing season which also happened to be the worst season in the NBA for that year and 2 first round exits to the Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics.

Do you see the common theme here that you’ve chosen to ignore. Great players still need other great leaders and great players to win championships.

I think the glaring criticism about Carmelo is his defense. Yes, he’s one of the best scorers in the league, but he’s not even an average defender. Kevin Love and Blake Griffin were mentioned earlier, and they’re good examples of guys that caught major flack, and were hammered for making All-Star teams due to their lack of defense, but unlike Melo…they’ve both improved and are what I’d consider average defenders. I’d argue that Melo has grown even lazier on D over the past 2 or 3 years.

    As for the trade?

L.A. – If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. They’re tied for first in their divison and have gotten there while having J.J. Reddick missing extended time and although Paul’s injury will provide a challenge, but adding Melo might mess up chemsitry, and especially when he’s making his debut with CP3 on the bench in a suit. You have a big imposing starting like. DeAndre Jordan is pulling in 13 rpg, and among the league leaders in defensive win shares, Blake is a 6’10” athletic freak who’s having his best pro season (IMO) he’s worked on his D, he’s tough to handle…you trade him and you have Jamison? Maybe you get Kenyon Martin in the deal…all of a sudden your front line doesn’t look so imposing, and points, Melo’s strong suit….well, the Clips are 6th in the league in scoring. I just don’t see this being that great for L.A.

NY – I get it. Melo is out after this year. This experiment is not what you wanted it to be, and you’re just trying to get a main player so you don’t lose him for nothing. My advice…package him for draft picks. You traded away yours. You have on of the worst records in a great draft class and look to lose out completely while sporting one of the league’s worst records. See if you can get Atlanta to part with their pick from the Nets, see if Chicago or Cleveland will bite, and maybe you can’t rent Loul Deng for a year. I just don’t think you’re going to get a superstar for superstar switch, and you need assets. All 3 of those teams want to make the playoffs, Melo can help them, they can try to convince him to stay…if not, it’s a calculated risk, but I think it’s NY’s best bet.

Incredibly risky trade for Clippers.  While I agree Memphisboy that the hate for Melo has gone beyond rational.  Melo still is a very valuable player.  But Griffin is probably more valuable to the Clippers.  Griffin may not be a great defender, but he is better than Melo.  And Griffin’s offensive game really complements Chris Paul’s.  Griffin is a great PnR player and his early shot clock post ups are rewarded by Chris Paul.  With only part of a season to integrate Melo into the lineup, I worry about whether he could actually upgrade the Clippers’ offense. The Clippers are firmly in contention for the title and, while they may not be in the upper tier, this trade would be more likley to blow up on them than propel them into title contention.

This makes sense for the Knicks, as they will have a hard time keeping Melo.  But this trade is incredibly risky for the Clippers.  It could work for LAC if they get another post player, but Paul and Melo would need time to get used to playing together.

The only problem I have with Melo is how much money he wants. He’s made it clear strait from the start that he’s going to get his, and he won’t take a penny less that what he thinks he’s worth. If Melo still has that attitude, then he will never be on a truely elite team. As long as his team is paying him over $20+ mil a year he will never be on a truely good team.

If Melo were mature, take a little less cash, and understand that you need a TEAM to win basketball games, then their is only a handful of players that I would take over him in the NBA today. When it’s all said and done, Melo is an elite scorer, an unrivaled shot creator, good rebounder (this year), and is one of the few players in this league who can actually take a game over.

As he gets older, I think this should start to dawn on him, but until then, I would be hard pressed to trade a promising young player in Blake for Melo. If Melo were to accept a contract that was similar to Griffens than I think I would make the swap, because at the end of the day Blake is an offensive player, and Melo is just better on that side of the ball right now. I also think the Clippers team would be perfect for melo.

I’ve always thought that if you built a team around Melo in the same way the Sixers tried to build a team around Iverson, than it would be a success. Surround him with good shooters and good defenders, and Melo will win you games. Add Chris Paul to the mix, and that team is a legit contender with a 3-5 year window to win it all.

In the short term the Clippers get exactly what they want, a player who can get them some easy points down low late in games or when the game slows down. Lets be real Chris Paul is usually by himself when those situations come along in the playoffs Melo would take that pressure right off him. The Clipps wanna win now and Melo helps them do that. Melo gets a bad rap, but honestly if he didn’t play the way he does this team would be in a lot worse shape.

For the Knicks getting Blake Griffen would be great. They really need to start over and he would be a great piece to start with. They should get rid of everybody except Shump and Hardaway Jr., Sweep the front office and start from scratch.

I think it depends on the team and coach.  Melo isn’t going to lock anyone up, but will get out to shooters and such.   Underneath Rivers I’m sure the direction will change.   A jack shot type offense like the New York Knicks wasn’t benificial to his game at all.

I’m not gonna touch the "Kobe wins championship so its ok to take HORRIBLE shots" crap.   Because I think we can all say there isn’t anyone close to taking more terrible shots in a game than Kobe.  No way that can be looked at as a good thing.

Blake…   I don’t know how I suppose to feel about him.  He has improved his jumper and free throw BUUUUUTTTT he’s still not a go to player offensively.   He refuse to go to his right shoulder for any post move and rather spin or bully his way to his right hand.   Dude really need to pay for "The Dream’s Summer Workout" immediately.   That’s the main reason this is even a discussion right now.   He hasn’t took that step to be the "real" superstar everyone claims he is.  His defense HASN’T improved at all.  He just doesn’t get lost as much, but its still horrid.  Chris Paul need to legit score 30 points and dish out 10 assists a game in order for the Clippers to go far in the playoffs.  That shouldn’t happen if you got another superstar on your team.   Melo with CP3 will benefit both players.   With a healthy Billups, Melo went to the Western Conference Finals (almost won).  Imagine what happens with a Superstar PG that will take the ball out of his hands and get it to him in his spots??

Melo get a lot of flack for what he hasn’t done, but I think its because he gets compared to LeBron a lot.  Outside of his first year with the Heat, Shaq or Lebron on his team, D Wade hasn’t made it out of the first round either.
