The Lakers signed rookie Derrick Caracter to a $473,000 contract for the 2010-11 season that will become fully guaranteed if he weighs 275 pounds or less on Sept. 10.

Currently, Caracter is only guaranteed $250,000.

The New Jersey Nets have requested waivers on forward Sean May, Nets General Manager Billy King announced today. “During a basketball workout last week, in preparation for the upcoming training camp and season, Sean May suffered a stress fracture to his left foot,” said King . “This injury has a four-eight week rehab period, which would not provide Sean a legitimate chance to make our team.” May, who signed with the Nets on August 9, 2010, is a four-year NBA veteran with career averages of 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds over 119 career games with Charlotte and Sacramento.

Possibly the best value for any player in the NBA. Not only is Caracter talented but he can contribute on an LA team who gets alot of blowout victories, and has their Top C injured. Great move by gaurenteeing extra money if he loses wieght, make him earn it.

I hate to hear that about Big Sean. He’s a good ball player… Just can’t keep that weight off. It’s been like that since high school.

I used to like may. He was the first guy I compared to zach Randolph. Good footwork post moves. If healthy he will have a great career in Europe

Caracter’s a great addition, the youngster really surprised me in summer league. The Lakers did great in the Draft, they picked two first round talents with their two second round picks. The Sean May situation is unfortunate, one injury after another. He’s only played 119 games in 4 seasons, the most he’s ever played was 37 games in a season, so it’s understandable he got cut. I hope he can come back stronger than ever though, after all, Ilgauskas only played 111 games in his first 4 seasons and he’s had a great career since.

I think they shouldn’t put a clause in the contract based on weight only but also on body fat. Overweight has killed alot of promising careers. Eddy Curry, Jamaal Magloire, Sean May, Jerome James (ok maybe not that promising) to name a couple. Some guys should realize that staying in shape is really vital for a player’s longevity in the league.
