Negg me all you want but stop with the CANCER term when it comes to something as little as basketball!! That’s a serious disease that takes the lives of many people. It’s sick and a sad reflection of todays time that we would use such a serious term that are used to label people with a major disease and use it to refer to a player who doesn’t fit a team’s mold??? Really?? Is it that serious that we will call someone a cancer over something so minute as basketball . Hey man I’m the biggest fan of the game, and can honestly say I use sports as a calming mechanism, but come on people lets be real its never that deep that we need to freely use the term to refer to someone who isn’t a team player!!! STOP!!!!

It is used because of the destructive nature of some players to an entire team.  They are often called "a cancer" because much like the illness, they are destroying a team from the inside out.  Cancer is very serious and it sounds like you have someone in your family that has recently been afflicted and i am sorry that has happened.  Here are the honest facts, 1 in 2 people will have cancer at some point in their lives.  99.9% of people will have someone close to them get cancer.  It is something that everyone has to deal with hs in one way or another.  Our society has become so sensitive about everything that is said and it is a shame.  Simply saying "black guy" on TV now becomes national news.  If you don’t want to say the word "cancer" then understand that is your choice.  But, by using it in a basketball setting, nobody is making fun of or making light of the terrible reality of cancer.  It is just a term.

Lastly, you can continue to be upset over this but it won’t change because of the way the word is used.  AIDs describes a specific illness.  There aren’t multiple types of AIDs.  Cancer is a broad term.  There are tons of different cancers.  So a player can be "cancerous" to a team.

Basketball isn’t that serious. It’s a game, but words change over time and people use certain words that sum up an idea. Cancer is one of those words. It’s like when someone is in a huddle talking about going to battle. Those guys know what he means. It’s not to take anything away from real war.

wanted to post just cause we are debating if Cancer is a good term to use or not. Okay while I understand that the term “cancer” affects many people in their everyday life and the people that they love most, I am not belittling that at all…. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT as a Med Student I’d like to enlighten you to what exactly cancer is (though a lot of you who took biology in high school will probably be able to say the same) Cancer, also known as Carcinoma (cancerous toumor, Carcin meaning cancer oma meaning tumor or growth) is actually the production of defective cells.

everyone’s body has cancer cells, or cells that do not work, but the condition of cancer is when your body produces many many of these cells. This is why Chemo is used, Chemotherapy is usually various poisons that destroy the cells in your body. This causes your body to restart the production process in hopes that this time it will be cells that function properly.

NOW considering what cancer really is… these players that DON”T play the way they are getting paid to in such a way that its detrimental is in fact a cancer…. with the team being the organism needing every part to work together in unison for it to survive.

……….. TL;DR —> Med Student Showing off basic Med stuff….

just look in a thesaurus for a different word to describe players that are damaging to a lockerroom.

    Definition of cancer:

an evil or destructive practice or phenomenon that is hard to contain or eradicate.

"racism is a cancer sweeping across Europe"
    synonyms:

    evilblightscourgepoison,cankersicknessdisease,pestilenceplagueMore

Words have multiple definitions, no one is belittling cancer sufferers by using a word.
