Embiid has been ruled out the rest of the season. My question is, can he still win ROY while only playing in 31 games?

ESPN writer Marc Stein tweeted: ‘I still struggle to picture voting for anyone else for Rookie of the Year over Joel Embiid. His mere 31 games still outshine all other rooks’

Can/should it still go to Embiid? If not, then who?

Dario Saric – has averaged 16.6 pts and 8 rbs/game in February and will continue to get minutes for the rest of the season.

Brogdon – averaging about 10 pts, 2.5 rbs, 4 ast while shooting about 42% from 3.

    Someone else?

What about Jaylen Brown or Brandon Ingram they both have contributed pretty well.

Brown or Ingram aren’t even close to Embiids total points scored this season and they played twice as many games. Only one rookie in league history has scored more points per minute than Embiid has this season…not MJ or Kareem but another Jayhawk…Wilt Chamberlain.

Its obvious he is the best rookie although somebody like Saric could be deserving strictly from a games played standpoint.

wasnt he only playing an average of 20 minutes a game and not even playing every game, mostly ever other game. I don’t know, but  theres probably a better choice out there.

He is averaging 25 minutes…and 20 points per game in those 25 minutes.

to a guy who not only played 31 games in 3 years but for 25 of those 31 games he was limited to 20 min or less.

Come on – it’s Joke. Embiid will be a good story 10 or 15 years from now when he’s famous for being a social media troll & people will say he actually played 30 games in the NBA way back in the day.

Uhh there were only two games he played less than 20 minutes this year. The minutes restriction was on the Sixers as well not on him as much of this has been. He could have played more but they don’t want him to because they have no desire to win this season. Most of this mess is on the Sixers.

I can’t wait until he is dominating the league in 4 years…

The thing is I think he needs to play at least half the Season to even consider giving him it if Dario or Brogdon remain healthy than it needs to go to one of them.

i do remember reading somewhere years back that winner of the rookie of the year award has to have played 42 games in the season or at least 1 game more than half if its a shortenned season. and although joels numbers do say he is far and beyond the best rookie, he doesnt qualify for the award. this could be outdated data since i havent followed the details of the current CBA or ive just been misinformed all this time.

i think dario is the favored man to win it. dont think its a coincidence that the top contenders for the award were either drafted and stashed in previous drafts or considered old for their class. i actually enjoy watching ready to play rookies entering the league instead of pure potential projects, but thats a discussion for another thread

If the award was caalled "Best Rookie" then yeah; he wins hands down but because it is "Rookie of the Year" I think you probably have to look at the course of the entire season which he has largely not been a part of. I wouldn’t begrudge him winning the award and at this point he is probably still in front on merit, If Saric keeps his pace he probably wins and would be eserving.

So to answer your question; yes he can still win but I think maybe he gets overtaken by season’s end.

If your a going to go on games played and what the rookie contributed the team it needs to be Malcom Brogdon.

I think he has to win ROY still.  ROY for the NBA declares a new potential star and who  fans can inveat in and can be transcendent.   Embiid is certainly transcendent.  He would of been starting in the All Star Game had they not changed the rule on fan votes (A rule that needed to be changed by the way. ) Hell most likely be leading all rookies in total blocks only playing 31 games and still be top 5 in scoring.

His dominance in the games he played was just so dominant combined with the under performance of the rest of the gap created a gap so wide I just don’t see how anybody else could be worthy.

Except one, Dario Saric.  If Saric continues scoring over 20 ppg while grabbing over 7 r pg and dishing out 4 apg then he could be justified.

So, Michael Carter-Williams could be transcendent? Lol

I don’t think it’s that complicated. Give it to the rookie who played best for most of the season. For as awesome as Embiid was/is/will be (knock on wood), I don’t think 31 games is enough, even though it was out of his control largely. Would you give MVP to a guy who played less than half a season? To me, Saric should win if he keeps playing like he has been

No clearly not every year there will be a transcendent rookie just like every year a rookie won’t get enough fan votes to start in the All star game.

MVP is different because the gap won’t be as large as it is with Embiid and basically Saric whose the clear 2nd best rookie from the same team yet it is Embiid who changed 5 the whole culture and perception of the organization.

Outright? No, I wouldn’t give it to him. What about a Co-Rookie or the Year with Dario Saric?

It seems like the best solution to me honestly.

That solves the debate and the fact they are teammates helps the legitimacy of it.

Of course Dario has to keep being the consensus second best rookie after Embiid (which should remain the case given Brogdon is clearly less likely to improve than him imo).

who the hell else can win rookie of the year?!?! He’s far and away the best player that’s a rookie and whether he played 31 games or not it isn’t close

As much as I love Embiid he just hasn’t played enough games. I don’t care how much better he is than the other rookies it’s just simply not fair to give him this award. Most of the awards have a limited game restriction to be even in the running and he doesn’t meet that restriction (I think it’s half, so 41 games).

I realize this is a special case, but if you start bending the rules then you’re going to only go further down the rabbit hole of what if’s. I’m sure there were more deserving MVP’s in the past than the guy who won, but because of injuries/lack of games they weren’t even considered. This just opens up a whole can of worms and arguments.

I would be fine if he won Co-ROY with someone, but I don’t think he should be the sole winner.

      Not fair?

You realize that he is not responsible for his lack of minutes or games played, so there is an argument towards it being unfair to him.

You could also say that’s it would be unfair to the dozens of players in multiple seasons who did not have the luck to be competing with Malcolm Brogdon for this honor, which arguably represents 5+ a year players.

I understand the concerns with at what point (i.e. how many games, minutes) can you consider a player’s performance sample size enough.

Personally, I think that if Embiid’s 31 games are better than the 31 best games of Saric or Brogdon, there is no debate, he should win it. And that’s the case right now.

There is also a money/advertising side of things, and that’s where Embiid has to win it. Perhaps sharing the award with teammate Saric, or making history winning it with just 31 Games.

I think embiid will be the rookie of the year when all is said and done. In a normal year it would seem absurd to give any award to someone who played in just 31 games. However, unless another rookie (saric, brogdon) really steps up and has a monster final 20 games I don’t think you could argue that embiids overall impact in those 31 games hasn’t been greater than anyone else playing the entire season. This has just been such an underwhelming rookie class that the award has to be embiids to lose unless someone steps up and takes it from him. Saric is probably the only one who legitimately has a chance.

Remember the NBA awarded Steve Kerr the coach of the year last season despite only actually coaching in 39 games.

First of all he shouldnt even be eligible considering he this should be his third year… but he is eligible so…

Second of all 30 games? Rookie of the year means rookie of the season. You gotta play the whole season. You cant be 6th man playing 30 games, you cant be most improved, MVP, DPOY. A successful rookie campaign is more than 30 games. His season should not be veiwed as a success and it should not be glorified by being rewarded this trophy.

Statistically he doesnt bring enough to the table but the most impressive rookie other than Embiid that Ive watched has been Jaylen Brown. The guy is an absolute monster and does a bit of everything for one if the best teans in the league.
