Earlier today the nets waived Andrea bargnani. Once he clears waivers he has until March 1 to sign with another team. Bargnani could still possibly have value as a stretch big off the bench for a contender, but given his injury history and reputation as a terrible defender, it is quite possible that no team picks him up. It’s hard to imagine at this point any team offering him a contract next season. Therefore, it’s quite possible we’ve seen the last of bargnani.

If this indeed is the end for bargnani, where would he rank among the most disappointing number one overall picks in the last 30 years? I would probably put him at about number five behind oden, kwame brown, Anthony Bennett and olowakandi in some order. He showed a lot of promise early in his career with toronto but never really developed the weaknesses in his game (rebounding, defending) and never really showed much of an interest in improving those areas.

The OP didn’t call Oden a bust but rather said Odens career was disappointing. I wouldn’t call Bargnani a bust either. I think he was who he was and early in his career Sam Mitchell tried to turn him into a rugged hard nosed defensive/low post presence. This didn’t work. The fact is in his prime he could have been a contenders third option with a plethora of skilled and unique moves. His problems were consistency. His mentality was not one of a first option or team leader.

I wouldnt mind Toronto signing him and I think he would fit in well as another floor spacer.
