So according to various interviews and admissions that I’ve heard on pod casts (primarily from weareutahjazz.com & slcdunk.com), and also from an insider friend in the organization (not that high up, but still gets bread crumbs) I’ve been able to gather some data on the Jazz strategy going into the draft.

Apparently the Jazz had Trey Burke as a top-3 talent in this draft, but didn’t think it was possible to go after him. Additionally, the Jazz had Olynyk rated way up there (don’t know exact slot, but very very high). Apparently, he had a workout for the Jazz where he just lit it up from deep–hit 63% on a huge volume during the workout. The Jazz plan was to sit at 14 and pick Olynyk. However, a contact informed them that the Celtics were going to trade up to get him at 13. That info combined w/the fact that the Wolves top choice (KCP) was gone and Burke had fallen opened a window for the Jazz to get one of the few players they wanted even more than Olynyk.

Also, the Jazz had Gobert rated as a lotto talent. When he slid to 27 and an opportunity popped up they jumped at it. Time will tell w/all of these guys. I’m very glad the Jazz got Burke. However, my opinion of Olynyk has gone up as well. I’m betting he’ll be one of the league’s top stretch bigs in a couple of years.

Olynyk’s PER was INSANE last season, but I genuinely felt bad for him watching him play defense. He has no idea what to do. If he can get that together despite his physical limitations, he’s going to be a very good player for a very long time.

Oh yeah, the Jazz. Totally unexpected. I’m ecstatic. I haven’t stopped smiling since Thursday. I think they’re going to throw the young guys out there and hope for a top pick next year (if they’re in the bottom five, it’s going to be rigged so they get Jabari. The Mormon kid in Utah? C’mon. Bank on it.). I can’t say enough good things about how when the cards fell the way they did, Dennis Lindsey and the Miller family went out and got their guy. They also bought back into the draft for Gobert. I don’t think the organization has ever done that before.

I’m so glad we got Lindsey. This is a new front office. I’m not as down on Corbin as everyone else seems to be, but if he shows no promise as a head coach and the young guys don’t start making huge leaps, I suspect he will be gone next season.

Apparently Lindsey was the guy in the SA front office that was always pushing for trades in the draft. In his first shot to call all the shots he scored big. I could not be more pleased w/our new GM. He crunches the numbers and makes smart aggressive moves based on his findings–a welcome change.

I really hope Olynyk pans out. Gonzaga hasn’t produced too much quality talent in recent memory in the NBA. I’m not very high on Gobert, you can’t teach length, but name effective players in the league that are over 7’1.

He oozes defensive potential and he’s already started working with Karl Malone for some offensive moves. Second, it’s rare to find 7-footers in general (on the planet). Obviously, only a small percentage of them will have the opportunity and the athleticism to make it in the NBA. It’s just a rare group–it doesn’t mean they’re at a disadvantage. Finally, most ineffective 7-footers are stone-handed plodders. Gobert isn’t.

No. However, when I heard Denver had picked him I was upset knowing what he could become and realizing my Jazz would have to play against him so often. The chance of him panning out was disturbing. When I heard the Jazz had traded for him I was excited. Gobert may be a bust. Or, he may be a serviceable 3rd big. Or, he may be a massive shot blocker/dunker w/uncommon quickness. For the 46th pick + cash… yea, I’m pleased.

I agree with several comments that the Jazz did well for themselves, I didn’t think the Jazz had a chance to get Burke so I didn’t watch too much video on him, but since they got him I’ve watched some and they got a steal at 9, Burke looks very good and should be at least a starter. Now with Kanter, Favors, Hayward , Burks, & Burke the Jazz have a young nucleas to build around and if they get lucky enough to be in the top 10 next yr they will be able to add a very good player to that already nice group. The Jazz don’t like to lose and so they don’t play young kids just to try to develop them and just accept the losing so I’m not sure they can get down to being a bottom 10 or lower team, so they could get a truly top notch kid in next yrs draft but next yrs draft looks to be so loaded that anything in the lottery could really be a great addition.
I’m hoping they don’t sign either Milsap or Jefferson and let the young kids plays and struggle alittle, I think both Kanter and Favors have been brought along slow so far but both are good enough and have enough experience that even though they could struggle , I don’t think it will be too bad. Burks is probably the least ready to start and probably won’t but he could be a starter by the end of next yr. I’d like to see the Jazz bring in a couple of SF’s like Dunleavy or Delfino , so Hayward can play mostly at the 2, that is his best position.

I wasn’t the biggest Burke fan during the workouts. He just seemed to be such a mediocre prospect. That being said, the Jazz are a perfect situation for him and I could see him winning ROY. He can focus on facilitating and shooting- two things that he is good at.
