HaleParticipantPersonally I define a building block as someone who can lead your team for the next 5+ years and have be a contender. When I think of a building block I think of younger guys like Rose, Griffin, Love, Durant, etc.

TRC1991ParticipantWhat type of criteria defines someone as a ‘building block’ in your opinion? this topic sparks curiosity to me
is it an age thing? is kobe a building block? how about a lesser player, but still solid like wilson chandler?

butidonthavemoneyA "building block" is a piece that contributes to the team that you ultimately want to compete with. Typically, the term is reserved for teams that are rebuilding. Batum, Matthews, Aldridge, Babbitt and even Smith are probably considered building blocks to the Blazers, who are looking to build a team that will be as competitive as possible while generating revenue for the team. Raymond Felton is less of a "building block", and could even be considered "temporary support", until the team can get a better fit (someone more consistent with their other "building blocks") in his place.
Kobe is less of a "block", and more of a "foundation".

kdtriv01ParticipantWhen I think building block, i don’t think of your future hall of famers or your best player. Building Blocks are solid pieces that help you succeed.
Durant, Rose, Wall, etc.. shouldn’t be considered building blocks, they are your foundation or your cornerstone. Just my thoughts though.

acantareParticipantI would agree with the previous post. Some player are franchise corner stones while there upper level complimetary playes are building blocks. In OKC Durnant is there corner stone. Westbrook, J Green, Ibaka where all building blocks while there where putting together an eite team. After the corner stone and the building blocks come the role players.
I would consider a building block player to be one who compliments your key player, is young enough to still develop (26 and under), and has the potential to play at a near allstar level.

HotSnotParticipantI would say a building block is a player who management and coaches feel is extremely competitive with most other players in the league at his position. A foundation piece would be a top 5 player at his position. A role player fills a niche that is typically complimentary to your building block players.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI would say guys like Lowry, Gallinari, Wilson and Tyson Chandler. Those guys are building blocks, pieces to the puzzle but not exactly the star piece.
Just like building a house, first you need your foundation. Which include a star player and a good coaching staff, then you put the building blocks on the foundation and build around it.
