9 3 point attempts per game
5 ft attempts per game

Meeks (Junior, 22 years old)

8 3 point attempts per game
7 ft attempts per game

I think Hield projects to be a slightly better defender and can add more to a team in the rebounding department, but, seriously?
I’ve heard awesome things about Hield’s work ethic, but he projects to be a spot up shooter in the NBA, and that’s it. He won’t be able to drive. He won’t be able to get to the FT line (worst FT rate than Meeks). He isn’t a great defender.
I like him and would love to have him with the 16th pick (Reddick was drafted 11th), but 3rd is way too early for him. I don’t think he would even start over Bradley at his best.0 - Posted on: Fri, 05/20/2016 - 3:41pm #1064211

celticsthugI don’t know. Everything you said is true but Celtics need shooting. Picking at three sucks. There’s not a player in this draft I’m sold on. I’m sure there is a big time player to be had at three. Just don’t know who he is. Going to be a lot of bust in the top ten this year. GM’s are going to earn there money

treytalkssports.comParticipantThere is a long list of teams who have regretted a selection early in the draft based on "need" instead of best player available.
Besides, if you want shooting plus upside, why not just pick Murray? Murray probably can play the point a bit more too (didn’t last year bc of Ullis, but did throughout high school).

BiggysmallsParticipantYeah I think that is a nice solid comparison for him.
Buddy supporters will be offended by it because we all want to hype the draft up and pump prospects up to be more than they are and the idea that Hield – this terrific college player and by all accounts a great ambassador for the game – could be just a decent rotation bench guy is kind of a bummer.
But yeah I could see it for sure. Meeks has carved out a nice living as a 3-point specialist but he’s not a guy that you build your team around. He’s not a starting caliber player, he’s not an elite defender or shot creater. He’s going to run off screens or spot up. That type of player has value but does he have top-3, top-5, top-7 value?
I think Hield can be better than Meeks, but how much better? If he’s basically a better version of Meeks, is that worth a top half of the lottery pick?

treytalkssports.comParticipantWell said. On Celticsblog I’ve got people comparing him to Curry and Harden, two players who have strengths in two very different areas. That goes to show how hype goggles get in fans ways.
I like Hield and as a Celtic fan I would love to have him. He works hard, carries himself well, and competes, but he is not BPA at 3. Like I said, I would take him at 16.
After Ingram and Simmons, here are my Celtic tiers:
Obvious: Bender, Murray
Questionable: Ellenson, Poelti
Surprise: Brown, Chriss

BleedGreen808ParticipantI read Celticsblog often and I’ve aslo noticed a lot of posters there calling for Hield. It started up when Boston couldn’t knock down a 3 pointer against Atlanta. Seems like a big overreaction in my opinion. Also noticed a lot of hate for Bender with posts that sound like Knicks fans when they drafted Porzingis(not comparing the two players).

MopgrassParticipantHield is much better at creating space for a shot and shoots all over the floor.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantIf I’m the Celtics I say take the dragon. No need to overreact and grab Hield that early. There’s shooters in every draft and with the nets pics you can shoot for a higher ceiling guy in the next draft. He would be a great fit on that team as they have a great culture and team already in place; their coach has also turned around a lot of guys careers while there that had no position or glaring weaknesses(Isaiah Thomas, great scorer but a poor defender and badly undersized, sullinger who has a great offensive game and can rebound but struggles in the weight and athleticism department, and crowder a guy who had no position but is now a solid 3 and D wing). I see a lot of similarities between him and Pau Gasol. Both guys were skinny very skilled big men with a diverse offensive game. When drafting that high you go off a talent not need; just sign a guy like Fournier in the offseason or just wait until another draft to get a shooter with the wealth of picks you guys have.

treytalkssports.comParticipantI could see him having a bit more of an offensive game, but I don’t see him using it much at the NBA level. Maybe here or there, but I don’t see him even being a primary ball-handler and floor general at any point. He just doesn’t have the point guard skills to pass it and is only an average driver.

BeastMode716ParticipantStrangler………. #8 overall pick by the Sixers in 1980 Draft………. Toney was one of the NBA All Time Great Clutch Shooters in the Conference Finals & Finals………… Toney was an Absolute Sniper / Killer!……
Chronic foot injuries derailed Toney’s career…… but Toney made the All Star team in just his 3rd year in the NBA……… he also made All Star his 4th year…….
Andrew Toney was a 53% FG% as a JUMP Shooter…… That’s an Insane FG% for that time period when opponents could not only hand check……… .
……..as a Rookie Toney avg 19 pts a game in the Eastern Conf Finals against the Celtics & shot 55%………
one year later in 1982 – in Only his SECOND season…… shooting 50% & avg 22 ppg & leading the Sixers to a Massiave upset in 7 games over the 60 win #1 seed Boston Celtics…… Including an INSANE 34 point game AT Boston Garden in Game 7 in one of the Rare game 7 Road wins in Conf Finals History………… & Toney lead the Sixers w/ those 34 points on 61% shooting!!!
That was the Famous "Beat L.A." game at Boston Garden as the clock wound down & the Classy Celtics fans realized they were going to lose……. They began chanting "Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.!…" to the victorious Sixers…… It’s one of the Great moments in NBA History…….
In the 1982 Finals the SIxers would lose in 6 games to the Lakers ……….. but Andrew Toney – again in ONLY his 2nd season – led the Sixers in Scoring w/ 26 ppg on 53% FG%!!!! ………….
Toney is one of the ALL Time best Clutch Snipers in NBA history!!! I remember those 82 Finals against my Lakers & we were More scared of "The Boston Strangler" than Dr. J in some ways…….. Great Call! If Buddy Hield becomes HALF as good as Andrew Toney he’ll be a Huge success……..

theballerwayParticipantyour coming from with the Meeks thing but I think Hield has more to his game than just a spot up shooter. Hes definitely not a incredible driver but if he is still able to hit shots at a good clip I think he can exploit driving lanes to atleast get solid pull up look or make the required pass if help comes. He’ll need a floater but he is a smart player. He is not a first option but I just think hes crafty and definitely a better ball handler than meeks and Reddick. I look at Brad Beal(6ft 3 sg/3rd pick) success as hope for Hield, I don’t think is as quick but I think his IQ and shooting prowess could off set that some. Lots a guys saying hes a poor defender but we gotta remember most rookies are, its just that some stay that way. Definitely Lottery pick imo where? we’ll see

Memphis MadnessParticipantAndrew Toney has been my comparison too. Just never saw him play. Have heard about him, seen his highlights (YouTube, etc.), and Charles Barkley RAVED about him in his book.
Situationally, I like the idea of Hield combining with either Marcus Smart or Isaiah Thomas. Then they still have Avery Bradley for a very interesting (if undersized) Four Horsemen Backcourt Rotation.
Going further back, to ANOTHER great I have never seen play live (or even on TV) would be Celtics great Sam Jones. Just a really good 2 guard. Complemented guys like Cousy and KC Jones very well.
Ok, so maybe the Celtics are rebuilding a classic backcourt rotation.
All they need now is the next Bill Russell…

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI still think redick is the best comparison. Senior year stats were extremely similar between the two. Both are at their best moving without the ball and neither really has the handle to be used as a primary ball-handler. Both phenomenal shooters wwith deep range. I think hield is a slightly better natural athlete but redick was actually kind of underrated in that regard as well. I could see hield eventually playing a very similar role.

mamadouParticipantI’m not high on Hield as an nba player, liked and watched him a lot in his last 3 seasons, but the meeks comp has to go, it was the sophomore/ junior 17 pts hield "25-40" range "spurs pick".
The senior Hield was something else…
Meeks is your 8-10 pts back up in an average to bad team, depending on playing time, more of a 3rd stringer in a good/great team.
Hield could be a decent starter or an elite 6th men, i’ll give him that.
Wouldn’t go higher than 6, and it’s beacuse the pels are an average shooting team, Gordon is gone and probably anderson, they need a 180+ treys per season player.
Too many weaknesses for the great 22 YO college player he was.
Reddick has now 4 str8 seasons averaging 15+ pts as a 30 mins starter in a winning team, i wish it to him…
