Has Brice Johnson finally turned the corner?  The issue with Brice has never been talent.  I’ve posted about him before.  He dominated Tulane with something like 24 and 7 which was expected, but today he looked like an all-american.  He had 27, 9 and 2 blocks.  I think Kennedy Meeks going out was the best thing for Brice.  He has more room to operate in the post.  Brice had the entire package going on today with jump hooks, spins to the baseline and nifty finishes around the rim and running the court and finishing in transition. UCLA is a good team, not elite, but Brice had his way in his match-up with Tony Parker.  UNC was ice cold from three but it didn’t matter today.  I can’t think of a more skilled player in the post in the ACC than Brice.  He just seems more focused and mature.  I think he could go in the mid-20’s in the draft.

I’ve always been impressed with him. I always wondered why he was not listed or too low on some mock drafts. Playing like John Henson back in 11-12 season. He will be a 1st rounder.

It has always been maturity and mental lapses that have hindered his potential.  Even with his impressive game it took him being benched after being lazy to get going.  If he can play consistently as focused as he did after his benching he has a future in the NBA.  It has never been an issue of talent of physical tools, he has both and then some.  He gets off the ground faster than we blink our eyes.

He was benched because of cursing loudly walking back to the team.

Completely agree with the rest. Tremendous leaper, great touch, nearly unstoppable right jump hook, plays above the rim, shows potential as a shooter, potential as a rim protector, flashes sometimes borderline elite area rebounding.

But he doesn’t have the motor to consistently play like this (or hasn’t proven it yet) and he has some major defensive problems he really shouldn’t have. In all my years of watching Carolina basketball, I’ve never seen a worst hedger. He’s almost a sure thing for one lazy foul on a hedge a game. Then when he gets in early foul trouble (which happens somewhat frequently) it completely takes him out of the game. Not sure what’s going on mentally there.

imo, he’s poor man’s Sheed without the incredible basketball IQ, defensive ability, and frame. Two of those can be somewhat alleviated over time, and I do think he has solid defensive potential because of moderately quick feet and elite leaping ability. Long term potential I see his frame holding him back a bit.

I think he’s a solid role player off the bench in the NBA. Worth a pick in the late first.

Brice as a senior definitely should not have to be benched and scolded by Roy for him to pick up his game.  He’s a senior and should be more mature be he is light years better than he was as a freshman.
