arowsky205ParticipantFor a guy that has a reputation of being a ballhog… 21 assists! He’s been a completely different player since Josh Smith left.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI mean look at what he did with Jameer Nelson(who I was a huge fan BTW)
Nelson was undersized, out of control, a tweener, a chucker, etc. etc. etc…
After SVG comes to Orlando, he turns Nelson into an efficient All Star (albeit for 1 appearance) and got that Team to the Finals…
Now Jennings has more talent than Nelson had at this same stage and is surrounded by an Animal in Andre Drummond and could turn the perception about him around…
KCP and another shooter developing on the wing could open up the entire floor for Jennings and Drummond (Monroe is as good as gone IMO)

OhCanada-ParticipantI’m done defending Josh Smith. I kinda had a feeling this type of turn around would happen after watching the Raptors do something similar by getting rid of Gay and Bargnani. Didn’t think it would be this fast and effective. Detroit is lucky SVG joined them. Does SVG have control over the team signings and trades?

r377ParticipantYes he does which is why it was unfair that some media bagged him after the slow start as it was not "his" team with any of his signings (besides Meeks).
As soon as he was hired as head coach, the first phone call he made was to Greg Monroe. He was quick to sign Jodie Meeks who is SVG’s only guy he signed.

doubledribblerParticipantIt is kind of interesting to see so many people that are shocked at the difference between pre and post- Josh Smith Pistons. I don’t think anyone saw this much of a difference, but I don’t think people could separate Smith’s talent from how much he hurt the team. He’s gone and now it opens up the floor, Monroe gets to start, more touches for other guys, etc. Josh Smith is very talented, but he plays with such a low IQ it kills the team. A lot of his bad shots were the equivalent of turnovers.
Van Gundy deserves a ton of credit for the turnaround. I think he was smart enough to not mess up the chemistry and cap by trading for guys he didn’t need or want. He was also smart enough to realize that benching Josh Smith would have likely been even worse for the team, so he cut bait and used the stretch provision on his contract. The guy can also coach. Orlando had a great thing going, but Otis Smith destroyed that almost as quickly as it was created.

Memphis MadnessParticipantHow many guys in NBA history have had a 55 point game AND a 21 assist game?
Can’t be that many. Wilt, Iverson, and maybe a couple more– if even that many.
Hats off to Brandon Jennings. You are the answer to a future trivia question.

CameronCrazy11ParticipantBasketball Reference only let me check back to the 1985-86 season for assists. The only guys to have a 55 point game and 21 assist game in their career in that time are Deron Williams (57 and 21) and Brandon Jennings (55 and 21). I also looked up Wilt’s career highs to see if he did as well. Wilt obviously scored 55 or more points quite often and also had a career high of 21 assists. Still looking to see if there are any more.

CameronCrazy11ParticipantThe best I could do was find guys who have 55 points and 22 assists (I don’t know why it’s so hard to keep track of assists on Basketball Reference, but I digress.) Oscar Robertson had a career high of 56 points and twice had 22 assists in a game. Tiny Archibald’s career highs were 55 points and 23 assists. Fun fact on his: they were only a couple weeks off from being 10 years apart to the date (Feb. 23, 1972 and Feb. 5 1982, respectively). Jerry West had 63 and 23. Pretty exclusive list.

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantSince 1985-86, you have Brandon Jennings, Andre Miller, Deron Williams, Stephon Marbury, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (Chris Jackson).

prophetmeirParticipantHes a former number one recruit out of high school, Hell he even droped 51 against our team in high school when he played for oak hill. Hes a good player who is starting to slow the game down in stans system. Remember he set the mcdonalds assist record in high school as well.

NCarmean18ParticipantI disagree with your logic, sir. Many players have turned a new table over their careers after having specific reputations. You’d be surprised what dedication and a motivational coach like Stan Van Gundy can do for players like that, especially Brandon Jennings. He has finally been taught that basketball is a team sport, and he has played extremely well since the Pistons came together as a squad. I for one am very happy for him, as I have been a fan of his since I watched him drop 55 points in a game as a rookie in the NBA. This could be the exact type of turnaround that he needs, and if he is motivated like I believe he is, he can change everyone’s perspective of him as a player.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThis team might be the Thunder of the East — the team no top seed wants to play in the first round.
Since Tayshaun Prince got traded to Boston, I think there were rumors that he would get waived.
If so, I think the Pistons should bring him in. He’s a solid veteran who can do a lot of things. He can play some 3 and some 4, too. He is not Boris Diaw but he has a lot of that in his game, and I think the coach could work something out like that for him. He is also still a solid defensive presence.
How have the Hawks/Pistons games gone this year?
We could have TWO shock-the-world first round matchups this year.

Lotto StudParticipantI did not watch the game, but throughout the previous Jennings threads, I’ve been placing emphasis on reverting to being this type of distributor. I’ll continue to take my hits for it, but as you all can see, he still will fill up the scoring coulumn as well.
He just needs to focus on facilitating the ball first and everything else will come from within the flow of the game, because he’s already opened up the floor by dishing the ball.
