When you hear about a player breaking his own league record, you expect it to be a wily veteran. You don’t expect a player just five games into his career.

Burlington’s Brady Heslip made waves when he set a league record with 11 three-pointers in his first game since being drafted 11th overall by the Reno Bighorns. Saturday, in just fifth game in the league, Heslip topped his own record by draining 13 threes in Reno’s 149-126 victory over the Idaho Stampede.

Heslip finished the night with a career-best 45 points on 16-for-28 shooting, including 13-for-20 from beyond the arc.

Heslip was well on his way to topping his own mark as he racked up nine treys in the opening half, in which Reno scored 90 points.

Through five games, Heslip is averaging a league-leading 32.3 points per game. His 45 three-pointers also leads the D-League with Akeem Richmond of Rio Grand Valley second with 28.

And while sheer volume of attempts has contributed to his total, so has his incredible 60 per cent success rate.

Troy Daniels, now playing with the Houston Rockets, smashed the D-League record for three-pointers last season with 240 — 88 more than the previous season-best. Heslip is on pace for 432 and though it may be tough to main his current average of nine per game, he could average half that for the remainder of the season and still break Daniels’ record.

As a guy that grew up playing against Brady (and Blessed Sacrament) it truly is amazing to see him doing this. I hope nothing but the best for him and his career but at some point some team will put a long guard on him to bother his shot.

No NBA team picked him up, so he is free to go to every NBA team. Which team could use a long-distant bomber like this the most? Charlotte (26th in 3pt%)?

He is an unathletic 6-2 SG who doesnt play much defense. He is the classic case of a guy set up for a lot of success in Europe, but not the NBA. The athleticism in the NBA weeds some guys out. There are players who are more talented in than NBA players playing in europe. They just dont fit in the NBA because they are a 6 foot shoot first PG, 6-7 center who is a below average athlete, they are an average athlete and can’t shoot. There are a lot of guys like this, it doesn’t mean they arent good at basketball, it just means they dont fit in the NBA.

Blake Ahearn would be the perfect player to compare Heslips situation had a few amazing stints in the d league but wasn’t enough to stick with an NBA team but he still has had a grat career overseas

just goes to show how awful the quality of the d-league still is. most games still look like pro-am ball.

I would think he goes to a contender as a deep threat off the deep end of the bench who can also fill in as a 3rd string point guard.  He is a situational guy it sounds like — Steve Kerr or some guy like that.
