trapgamesolidParticipantAs a Celtics Fan, I was a little bit frustrated with how they performed in the playoffs, but I have to say I currently love their situation going forward. However, there is two different scenarios to look at. Ainge can look at building through the draft with the Brooklyn picks or use them to trade and get some proven stars and sign free agents to go for a Championship like he did in 2008.
Here’s the current situation:
2016 Draft:
1st Round: Brooklyn, Dallas, Boston
2nd Round: Philly, Minny, Miami, Cleveland
2017 Draft:
1st Round: Brooklyn, Memphis
2nd Round: Clevleand, Minny, Clippers
2018 Draft:
1st Round: Brooklyn, Boston
2nd Round: Boston
Players currently under contract (No player option): 9
Cap space for 2016-2017 season (90Mil Salary Cap); around 50Mil
Worst case scenario for next year is Ainge does absolutely nothing. Just resigns the current players such as Turner, Sully, Zeller and picks up the options for Jerekbo and Johnson. Then drafts well and upgrades the team in rebounding and scoring. I’d say if he does this, the team wins around 50 games and maybe makes it out of the first round. Again that’s worst case.
But I can’t possibly think free agents like Durant or Horford wouldn’t find this situation attractive. Let’s say they do (Best Case scenario). You can sign them both to max contracts, and trade all your draft picks and quality players like Bradley or Turner in a mega deal to get either Cousins or Jimmy Butler, who are in bad situations with their current teams. Let’s say that happens, Now you have Isiah Thomas, Butler/Crowder, Durant, Horford and Cousins as a starting lineup pretty much all in their prime.
I know some people might think this is very unlikely to happen, but with all that cap space, the draft picks and good players Boston has, they can really turn it around if everything falls into place.

BleedGreen808ParticipantI was a fan of Sully in college and early in his NBA career but at this point I don’t want to bring him back regardless of if Boston signs big free agents or not. His weight is a constant problem and he can’t play consistently enough. Atlanta went at him when he was trying to defend Milsap or Horford and Stevens had to bench him because of it.

trapgamesolidParticipantSully could be as good if not better than Draymond Green if he lost weight and played with more fire. He just doesn’t care. I agree that Ainge shouldn’t waste a roster spot on a guy who doesn’t even take his professional career seriously.

Andrew1984ParticipantI’m going to guess that you’re not getting Kevin Durant or Jimmy Butler and I’m really not sure that Brad Stevens wants to invite DeMarcus Cousins into his locker room. Al Horford is the most plausible name that you mention. As I’ve stated before, I think adding Horford and either Brandon Ingram or Jamal Murray would make for a great offseason for Boston.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI think Boston should swing for the fences BUT there is a large part of me that thinks they could just stay patient and continue to build through the draft, It all depends on where the team ends up drafting…
If they land Ingram or Simmons they almost have to build around that guy eventually, if they end up drafting 3 or 4, Bender or Buddy Yield would be the most obvious fits, Bender would be the best logterm prospect but Buddy would help a Team trying to contend…
If the Celtics wanted to put a package together and make an offer for Butler or Cousins I do think the Kings and Bulls would listen to their best offers, just don’t know if the Celtics are going all in yet…
In 7 days we find out the Draft Order, May 17th can’t get here soon enough…

Magic JordanParticipantBoston can do or take whatever hell path they want. They have so many assets that they can trump any offer made for the "available superstars" any other team can make. If the Lakers wanted Jimmy Butler, that’s too bad because if Boston wants them he is theirs. Not saying the Lakers do, just using them as an example.
They can build through the draft if they want since they already have a very good team and don’t need to gut it to have a chance at landing a top 3 pick.
Ainge has put himself in a position where they really have no restrictions. They could trade multiple draft picks and a few rotation players and still have enough quality to be a very good team.
Not to mention their coach.
They should be the envy of the league, and they are.
I’ve heard and had multiple sources tell me that Billy King still isn’t walking right…..

CavFanPRParticipantIf the Brooklyn pick lands outside the top 2, I’d say trade it in a package for Paul George. The Celtics need a star badly on that roster.

Bill Walton’s KneesParticipantUltimate best case scenario by year (no FA signings or trades) and assuming the Memphis pick is in the top 12 (I believe it’s top 12 protected)
2016: Simmons/Ingram with one or two, Labissiere, stash pick
2017: Josh Jackson
2018: Ayton or Michael Porter
Of course, there could be a late bloomer out there in the 2017 HS class, and it’s super early to even talk 2018, but it would be fun to see all of these studs on the same squad at the highest level.

BiggaveliiiParticipantlol your not getting paul george after what he did in the playoffs for a pick outside the top 2. Realistically their best chance at landing two good players would be horford and Butler. Which would be pretty solid

phila9012ParticipantYeah, I could see the bulls deciding to blow it up and trading butler for the nets pick most likely in the 3 to 5 range, and the celtics/ nets pick next year, the celtics have the right to swap, so it is probably a top 5 to 10 pick. If they did that, then the celtics should be able to get a horford, howard or whiteside from free agency, much like the trade for ray allen convinced KG to go to boston the trade for butler would be as much about getting butler as it would be about getting the second player.

MachettiParticipantI have to believe Ainge is going all in this year if not now then when. The roster is full of young guys they don’t need anymore drafted players. I mean I’m still waiting for James Young to play more mintues. Ainge has the cap space the treasure troves of picks and an up and coming coach and team. I will make a bold prediction and say he’s not using the BK pick. Danny has been infatuated with Kevin Durant ever since his college days and will try anything to get him. Believe me KD knows the situation in Boston and knows he can form a big 3 there. Also Durant knows that the West is way to tough the East would give him a better chance at a title. Let’s face DeMarcus Cousins wants a change of scenery and they have Willie Cauley-Stein to slip in and develop on the fly as a starter. Horford Will go where the money is and if Ainge gives him a max deal he’ll be a Celtic for sure.

BiggysmallsParticipantIsnt every team’s "best case scenario" to sign Durant and Horford?
Can there be like a "best case scenario" that’s realistic when people do thse offseason things? I mean, yeah I get it, signing the two best FAs would technically be "best case"…but is there even a fraction of a percent chance that happens? I don’t see it.
How about if it happens, we analyze the hell out of it…and only do so after it happens. Not before because thinking about it is a waste of time.
The problem with Boston’s roster right now is that they’ve got good players who do their job well, not bad enough that you can really justify benching them or upgrading, but not so well that they win in the playoffs.
I love Avery Bradley, and like Isiah thomas. But I don’t think you can win with both of those guys as starters. Expand that to Crowder. I like him a lot too. I think you can win if two of those guys are starters and one comes off the bench…but all three were good last year and benching them probably messes up chemistry.
They clearly need front court help. Sullinger is meh. Olynyk is meh. Amir Johnson is a nice rotation big. They need a true impact guy in there somewhere. Don’t know where they find that guy unless they give up those Brooklyn picks.

ExumInfernoParticipantThe worst case would be quite bad, by re-signing Turner, Sullinger and Zeller he would be handing out huge raises and taking away any free agent signing ability then or for the future. If someone like Bender is drafted, if Sullinger and Zeller are there on a combined $18million then there will be problems with minutes and shots. Turner is a bench player, if he gets huge money to play behind Crowder and Bradley that is a problem too, especially if a shooting guard or small forward is drafted.
The lottery may change things, but right now they have too many players and too many picks. 8 picks. Thomas, Smart, Turner, Rozier can all be point guards. Half the team can play power forward.
As Memphis didn’t send a pick this year, it means Boston waits for 2019 or longer for one from them.
