The Celtics have so many question marks going into this offseason.

They have a ton of free agents, a lot of cap space, and they have two first round picks (#21 and #22) that they could use to maybe trade up?

If they win a championship, do Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett return?

Here is a list of their upcoming free agents

    Ray Allen

    Brandon Bass

    Marquis Daniels

    Keyon Dooling

    Kevin Garnett

    Jeff Green

    Ryan Hollins

    Sasha Pavlovic

    Mickael Pietrus

    Greg Steimsma (RFA)

What are some your ideas on what they should do this offseason?

I know this is a draft/ trade website, but what sense does it make to talk about a team that is 2 wins away from the final. Lets stick to the Bobcats/ Hornets/ Blazers  ect

The Celtics can add two quality players at #21 & #22 but I don’t think they want to start rebuilding so a those picks could be packaged to add other pieces to pair with Rondo and Pierce.

I don’t think what they do in the offseason hinges on them winning another title or not.  I think that Ainge realized that this was the last hoorah for this core group of guys.

I’ve floated the idea of a Pau Gasol trade with the Lakers before and I think it makes even more sense in the offseason.  The Celtics would have to give up both first rounders to pull the deal off but I would think a deal like this could benefit both sides.

    Lakers get:

    Jeff Green (sign and trade)

    21st and 22nd Picks

    Celtics get:

    Pau Gasol

The Lakers wont be trading Pau for Jeff Green…I dont think they’d trade Ron Artest for Jeff Green

There really is no reason to rush your team into rebuilding. Whether they win a title or not, what is the harm in re-aligning the contracts of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to match up with Paul Pierce (2 more years)? At that point, they would have Rajon Rondo going into his final year, Avery Bradley an RFA, JaJuan Johnson entering the final year of his rookie deal, and their two first rounders from this upcoming draft entering their third year. At that point, they could know whether they would be transitioning rather smoothly from one generation to another or moving towards a real rebuilding.

I think this is the year they let Ray Allen go.  They need to free up room for young talent.  I think they do their best to keep Garnett, though.  He is a great leader and mentor for any young bigs and really anchors their defense.  If they can get him on a bit of a pay cut, he could help the rebuilding process.  They can rebuild without blowing everything up and tanking.

They are probably going to resign Green, but I wish they wouldn’t.  He is a huge liability on defense who doesn’t rebound well at all for a pf and is a black hole on offense.  All he does is score inefficiently.  I think Bass could go to.  He is a nice instant offense player, but somebody will overpay him.

I say they sign a couple of their veterans, such as Pietrus and Dooling, as well as Stiemsma, and try to see what they can get in the draft.  With the picks they have, drafting Quincy Miller, Andrew Nicholson, Will Barton, and/or Arnett Moultrie would be smart.  If they could trade up for PJIII, that would also be nice.  Then next year they could give their young players playing time and give them an opportunity to develop alongside Rondo, while still keeping the team competitive, with Rondo, Pierce, and Garnett.

this is a tough call to make as they are again close to making the finals in a shortened season while both pierce and allen are playing hurt. in my opinion i would bring back allen and garnett for atleast one more year, maybe 2 as mentioned by some to match up with pierce. This is a deep draft so i would keep my picks and try to draft a combo of fab melo and quincy miller. fab melo to me is a must as he alters shots and that is something that is a HUGE need for the celtics as once garnett leaves the game, they are exposed. i’ve watched alot of videos about quincy miller and think hes a guy whos got a lot of potential. go through proper training now will allow him to gain some of his athleticism back but if he doesnt, hes still long enough to make up for it. He’d have the added bonus of learning from a player like paul pierce who has never been too athletic, especially now but still has no trouble in getting his shots off.

I think trading for perry jones would be a bad idea and not because i think he will be a bust (actually have high hopes for him) but because he will fall into the same problem he did at baylor. due to garnett and pierce playing heavy minutes at the 3 and 4, he would have to play centre to get big enough minutes to contribute.

They need to make picks that help them now but do not comprimise their future. THey would get bigger and add talent with melo and miller.

They could play Perry at the 4 if they wanted too. They could have him play some 3 off the bench and see how he does. I think they can give one year deals out to KG and Allen. Allen will be Allen after he gets his bone spurs removed. Keep the two pics or trade up for PJ3 is fine to me.

At 21 and 22 they should think about going with Royce White and Fab Melo.  That could give them their inside guys for the future.  Combine that with Rajon Rondo at point and Avery Bradley at the wing.

Offer Ray Allen a 1 year deal.  Offer KG a 2 or 3 year deal but at a lower salary than he is getting now.

This is Rondo’s team and he is definitely a guy you can build around.  Avery Bradley and 2 first round picks is a good way to start the rebuilding process.  With those two players I think they should turn themselves into a defensive, attacking team.  Use the fast break more.

I like Will Barton for that kind of system and with a younger Celtics team but AB is at the 2 and I am not sure if either of those guys can play the 3.  Luckily for the Celtics, Rondo seems to be one of the few guys you can build a legit title contender around.  So get pieces around him that fit.

ultimately, on the open market, picks in the twenties aren’t worth that much. But Boston isn’t deep, and if they want to trade for some new starters, they’ll get even shallower. Those picks could be worth something if they use them in the right way- they’ve got so many holes that they can afford to pick the best players available, and as they’ve got two picks, they can afford to take some risks.

I feel that Kevin Garnett has to be resigned.  Ray Allen could be let go but Im a big Ray Allen fan.  I would say KG at least and a few other players.  I feel that this team should draft Andrew Nicholson and either Royce White or Fab Melo.  This team is one of few who i feel could take a chance on Fab Melo.

Being a Celtics fan this is what I see happening

KG,J Green, Pietrus, Dooling are all resigned for short deals 1-2 years

Steimsma gets a slighlty longer deal 2-3 years

Sign and Trade Bass for ???

21 + 22 will be picks looking towards the future hoping for Harkless or Jeff Taylor and Nicholson

save the free agent money for a better offseason

    Regarding Free Agents,

I think they will/should resign Kevin Garnett, Daniels, Bass, Pietrus, and Ray Allen (for a reasonable, short deal)

    Draft Wise,

I have the Celtics taking Moe Harkless with the 21st pick. He’s has a high upside and is gifted athletically (6"8 tall, 7"2 wingspan, runs the floor well.) Next season, he will learn under Pierce’s tutelage and provide scoring off the bench. And, when Pierce retires, he takes over groomed and ready as Boston’s starting 3.

With the 22st pick, I don’t mind if they get a big like Fab Melo or Andrew Nicholson. Either Melo could patrol the paint or Nicholson could provide interior scoring at the 4.

I wouldn’t mind if they package one or both of the first round picks to move up and get an extremely high upside guy or athletically gifted big man. (PJ3, Drummond, Leonard, or Moultrie)

I agree with you on everything on free agents except Ray Allen. I dont think he’s going to want to take the sixth man role. When his ankle is all healed up, I think he’ll still be good enough to start on a contending team. However, I am a big fan of Ray Allen so I hope they do re-sign him.

I completely agree with the draft. I also have them taking Harkless (over Royce White, Quincy Miller, and Jeffery Taylor) and Melo. They can afford to take a risk on Melo since they have the other pick and they need size.

It could be the time to part with Ray Allen as he is 37 soon and may well call it a day, if he would accept MLE for a year then he can still be considered. KG’s situation may well depend on what KG wants to do, the way he has played recently could well make him worth a very lucrative one year deal, again like Ray Allen he is a player of huge standing and until he has decided on his future then nothing can really be offered to him.

If you could get KG and Ray Allen back for maybe $16 million combined, then draft a couple of youngsters for these guys to mentor, get a couple more veterans in and make anothor run at it, if not then they need to look at the FA market.
