As a lifelong Wisconsin fan, I cannot thank Bo Ryan enough. After Dick Bennett some how got the 2000 squad to the Final Four, I thought that was it. Granted I was very young at the time, but I thought that that was the best Wisconsin was going to ever do.

Then Bo came along. He really transcended this program. Although he never got the blue chip recruits that Coach K or other big names got, he made Wisconsin basketball into a powerhouse. In the ultra-competitive Big Ten, he never finished lower than fourth. Now that’s amazing.

Although he never won a D1 national championship, I still believe him to be one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game. His resume, including 3 D3 national championships, is unbelievably impressive. He was the best developer of young talent I’ve ever seen in the game, taking kids like awkward Frank Kaminsky in his freshman year to NPOY in his senior year. I still don’t believe he gets the credit he deserves from the media. If he consistently had the talent that Coach K had at his disposal his entire career, I’m certain he would’ve won at least one championship.

Just wondering where you guys put Bo Ryan. Do you believe him to be a HOF?

I think the 2015 championship would have really cemented his hof candidancy. He will probably still get in eventually but that would’ve cinched it. I personally think he should get in anyway but having a national championship on your resume almost makes you a lock.

Im a little curious to know why he stepped away now instead of at the end of the season which always seemed to be the plan. You have to wonder if the teams struggles so far this year had anything to do with his decision.

Bo was an absolute master at teaching fundamental ball and developing players. He proved that you could still win the old-fashioned way in the modern era of college basketball. I was turned off by his comments and his complete lack of respect for the Duke program after the title game though and this decision to leave in the middle of the season seems somewhat selfish unless there were other unknown driving factors behind it.

He retired now because he wanted to give his long-time assistant, Greg Gard, a shot at coaching Wisconsin. Barry Alveraz wants to go after the big fish for the vacancy, like Tony Bennett. Bo felt that this would be Greg’s only shot to prove himself as the coach of the future for Wisconsin.

You were always certain he was going to put together a good product on the court year in and year out. I believe he is a HOFer. As Jon Rothstein always says…. Death. Taxes. Bo Ryan.

I think he is a HOFer. I agree with what others said. If he had won a national championship, he would be a lock. He always got the most out of his teams.

He’ll probably get in based on his D3 chips, and the perception that he really developed players.  Though you could argue that Sam Dekker coulud have been a one and done at other programs.

But, not being a Wisconsin fan, and only seeing Ryan on TV during postgame interviews, I was really annoyed with him for his postgame interview after losing to Duke in the 2015 national championship.  I mean the guy could have been thrilled that he coached his team past one of the greatest college teams ever assembled in UK, and made it to play for the national championship.  He could have spent that time praising his players, and the fans, and Duke.  But instead he made some petty remarks about Duke being a one-and-done team which was a really lame thing to do for a guy who is supposed to be a class act.  Heck, I really don’t like Duke at all and I would have LOVED to see the Badgers beat them.  But give the devil his due, Duke played a great tournament and were well-coached, and won it all.  It’s not the wins that show someone’s character.  It’s how they behave in losses.  That one interview gave me insight to Bo Ryan, and I think he really diminished his legacy.
