Watching Larry Bird’s live press conference on pacers.com.

"Frank’s not getting fired, his contract is up and I just made the decision not to renew it."

"I started thinking about it at the All-Star break. It’s a tough deal. Next coach I’ll take my time and go through a lot. Make sure we get a guy that can lead (the team)."

So now that Vogel is out, what coaching candidates will fit the Pacers? Bird said that Kevin McHale isn’t an option due to their friendship. And where will Vogel end up?

If he’s willing, Vogel would be a great defensive-minded assistant next to Walton on the Lakers bench.

The way bird is talking "points, points, points" I could see them going after Hornacek or even offering MDA a contract to become a HC again

In one of his biographies Bird says coaches have a short shelf life with a team (3 years) and Vogel had been there twice as long. My guess is Nate McMillian is going to get the job if he states he will run an offense similar to what Bird desires. As for Vogel, I think every team with an opening will be interested in him. I think the Knicks would be very interested if they decide not to keep Rambis (my feeling is that is the Knicks keep Rambis). If the Knick move on from Rambis, I think Vogel ends up there. Otherwise, I think he is the Rockets new coach and he would be a good fit given that teams defensive struggles.

Gotta be honest, think that is a terrible decision. I have Vogel on the very top tier of nba coaches – the way he reworked the pacers defence when hibbert left was simply awesome. Let’s be real about this – outside of Paul George, the pacers suck. All of their hopes are pinned to a rookie and a solid but not spectacular point guard, because outside of that their best players are cj miles and monta frickin Ellis.

whoever they hire, I think the pacers go downwards this year. But maybe that’s what bird’s hoping for (rather than remaining a 7-seed) – clear house of everyone apart from PG and turner, tank for draft picks, attack free agency and try to build a talented team around George.

I don’t understand the logic behind this decision. Vogel has been amazing and he has helped this team to success even with injuries and not being a top market like LA or Chicago where they can easily grab top free agents.

I’ve always been a big fan of Vogel. I especially liked him a few years ago when he was a brash and borderline arrogant guy saying things like Miami is just another team in our way of accomplishing what we want to accomplish. I loved the swag. He seems to have mellowed out, but he’s a heck of a coach.

If MN hadn’t scooped up Thibs, I would’ve looooved Vogel.

Not a good decision to me. Vogel is a very good coach and I don’t see any better options available.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up somewhere where he has a similar path like Rick Carlisle in Dallas who also did a good job with the Pacers and a phenomenal job in Dallas.

On the other hand joining a team like the Lakers as an assistant might not be wrong either. The Thunder could also need a defensive minded assistant since they really made two steps backward without Brooks.

I’m a little mad because Bird sounds like he’s playing 2k instead of running a real life basketball team. You can’t just say "RUN FAST. SCORE POINTS." and expect it to magically happen with a roster that’s not built to run particularly fast or score a particularly high number of points. The fact of the matter is that, while the team did blow some leads this season, it was a damn miracle and a massive overachievement to even be in a position to win some games and make the playoffs, let alone push the number two seed to seven games. Bird better have a damn good backup plan, or making the playoffs next year sounds like a stretch.

Since I’m not expecting a great backup plan, he might as well hire someone who’s put in the work and deserves a chance, like Becky Hammon. I expect him to interview retreads like Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, Scott Brooks, or offer it to someone like Nate Mcmillan.

I don’t know. I’m pretty salty about the move, as you guys can probably tell. I hope Bird proves me wrong.

    Dear Larry….

Your "PG" ain’t a PG, 3 assists for his career, 2 in the PO, come on.

Your starting bigmens were Allen and Mahinmi, allen is a 3rd stringer in many teams, Mahinmi is a starter by default, career 5 pts back up, lucky you Turner’s an absolute steal.

And finally tay, he’s 30, at that point he should be a 6th men instant offense more than anything else.

7 seed, 45 wins, in front of the bulls/wizards, 7 game serie, with that personnel, who would have thought before the season…

Vogel did the job, your turn.

Larry Bird knows what he is doing, he gave this coach a big chance and he didn’t win a title so now someone else gets a shot.

The Pacers have less money and can’t afford a big rebuild so Bird does great to make them competitive, and a few years ago they were a contender.

Now Bird is giving them a different look, based around George and Turner and now a new coach.

If Bird can find a quality swingman at pick 20, the Pacers will be exciting and hard to stop.
