Posting on a thread about Rondo, I speculated on D-Wade’s $23.8 million player option for next year and Dirk also has a $25 million similar option.

It does seem strange that teams give veteran players these type of options, I’d have thought the team’s would want continuity for two years or maybe a team option. My hunch is that if a player like Dirk or D-Wade who has done it all, did feel they could not play to a level they felt they should, they could decline option and retire or even move on if situation wasn’t right.

It gives the team a possible in direct get out and probably the players would not want a team option in case it got declined, so they don’t have to suffer that fate. Dirk had a no trade clause but D-Wade in theory with a team option could have found himself traded to say Brooklyn where I’m sure he’d have no desire to play.

Is it almost an unwritten rule that the player such as this could decline the option and retire or just move on as players with their careers don’t really need the money.

It just seems strange that a team could be in a uncertain position how much cap room they have given the size of these player’s options. I’d assume that the players have a clear deadline when options have to be picked up by.

Also if D-Wade picked up his option, I’d assume he’d become a possible trade chip next season or over the summer as he doesn’t have a "No trade clause" like Dirk does unless he’d look for an informal agreement that if he opts in, he stays put.

I think Dirk’s $25 mill is a “thank you” from Cuban. Dirk has continually taken pay cuts over the years and tried to recruit free agents.

Wade should of got the same from Miami for helping win their championships and bringing in Lebron and Bosh but the Heat shafted him, so he moved on.

I remember when Larry Bird retired, he could of waited to be paid, then retired but instead he retired a day or two before his extension $$ kicked in. I can’t see too many players (if any besides dirk) doing this these days….
