I’m watching the Det vs OKC summer league and I’m watching Andre Drummond try to do moves that he shouldn’t be doing. For example dribbling between his legs at the free throw line, trying to take he ball coast to coast instead of giving off to a guard, and generally trying to do things out of his skill level. It got me to thinking who are your top 5 bigman teachers and who do you think should work with Andre Drummond. I know they got Rasheed Wallace as an a coach too.

    My top 5:
    Hakeem
    Kareem
    Kevin Mchale
Tim Duncan ( I think he will be a great teacher)
    Karl Malone

Hakeem is widely respected as the best today. John Thompson would rank higher than anyone else on your list. Bill Laimbeer, Mark Aguirre, and Kurt Rambis also, probably.

I know that being a great player doesn’t make you a great coach but I you have played at a high level and dominated I think that speaks volumes and they can give invaluable tips that other coaches can’t.

Ewing did wonders with Yao back in the day, but both he and Hakeem couldn’t get through to Dwight.

Howard is going to get some more time with Hakeem now he is in Houston. The game of Hakeem’s is awesome no doubt from a teaching stand point but the thing that sticks out to me that people say about Hakeem and I remember Kenny and Charles saying this… Is that he(Hakeem) is the most honorable guy they had ever met. That is as strong as anything someone could say about you.

Hakeem is known as man of principle. Let us see if he can somehow get Howard to actually TRY to develop a post game of any sort…

The only big man coach to get through to Dwight was Clifford Ray.

I can’t believe (actually I can given the make up of this forum) Ray isn’t getting any other mention in this thread. HE’s the one carrying on the legacy of Pete Newell’s big man camp with his own big man camp with Robert Parish.

Hakeem’s great but not every big is gifted with the coordination and touch that Hakeem had. He can only pass along so much of his game. Like, how are you gonna teach Dwight Howard his counters like the shoulder shake turnaround jumper over his right shoulder?? You can’t since Dwight cant shoot a jumper.

And that is the sad part to me. Dwight had one of the best shooting big men ever in Ewing working one on one with him for 4 years and he couldn’t even change his free throw form. Clifford Ray and the Pete Newell school of big men is sadly going by the wayside as bigs are either 1) stretch guys who roam the perimeter or 2) electric athletes with little care for actual post moves… Sad indeed.

Excellent point about D12 having Patrick Ewing to work with him for 4 years in Orlando. As regards Rasheed Wallace, it will be interesting to see what he can do with Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.
