valentineI’ve dished out my fair share of criticism to Detroit for their decision making this off-season (and city homicide rate), but it’s now time for me to acknowledge some shrewd business. In particular, none other than the Big Banger…
Aron Baynes
I’ve read numerous opinions that state how he was one of the most overpaid free agency signings by both journalists and forum bloggers alike. For those that aren’t aware, it’s 3 years, 20million. Yet I’d like to argue that this is in fact an excellent piece of business given the amount of money thrown at guys like Reggie Jackson and Enes Kanter. Having watched more of Baynes than most, he’s one of the most under-rated Big Men in the league.
Check out his per 36 minute stats.
15 PPG
10.2 RPG
57% FG
87% FT
+6.2 pts per 100poss
46% shooting between 16-22 feet (So more than just a banger)
Pretty good stats considering the Spurs ran virtually no plays for him.
Defensively, I realise that he he got dunked on badly by Blake Griffin, but his defense is actually pretty good too. He’s a brick wall in the post, and can move his feet pretty quickly also.
So…whilst Baynes may not be the coolest cat in the Motor City (Stevie Wonder still holds that distinction)…..he will definitely be a productive player in Detroit and definitely not overpriced at 6.6m per season in this market.
Thoughts?

chaParticipantThis is another solid signing for coach VG. With Monroe signing elsewhere, they really need another big man that can bang with big bodies and hold the fort down while Andre rests.

kobyzParticipantBut why to pay 20mil for a guy to play 10mpg(can’t play alongside Drummond)?

Rip255Good question my learned friend…so I shall endevour to answer.
1) Drummond plays 30mpg, thus leaving 18mpg available at the C spot (not 10 as you stated). He fouls a lot….
2) Baynes can also stretch the defense by playing PF (see point in OP re: 46% fg from 16-22feet)
3) The market for decent centers in free agency has always been overpriced.

kobyzParticipantYou really think bynes and drummand gonna share the court together, not only it will be disaster defensively, also Stan like to play a stretch four…

SpinCycle88ParticipantVERY good points! Andre doesn’t play 30+ mins very often so Baynes should be able to jump in right away.

Bed HeadParticipantSomeone here (pretty sure it was that creepy Russian girl who says "like" way too much) made a really good point about the double standard on this forum. In terms of the way major markets are treated relative to the lesser lights. This thread is, like, such a great example of that! Something tells me that had the Knicks or Lakers signed Aron Baynes to a "big" contract, either (a) everybody would laugh or more likely (b) literally nobody would care. And yet, here we have an entire thread devoted to the subject.
P.S. Stevie Wonder?! What about Eminem? Or Joyce Carol Oates? ("Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" is, like, the greatest short story ever!)

Bed HeadParticipantBest film of 2014 by far, imo*. Not even being nominated for Best Director/Best Actress was the biggest joke since “Black Swan” lost Best Picture to “The King’s Speech”.
Sorry for being so OT, but you mentioning Australia reminded me. Thus it’s kinda your fault, really. So people should neg you, not me. Then once everybody sees “The Babadook” and loves it, you all can come back here and “thumb up” my post.
* And seriously I, like, see everything. If I’m awake I’m either at the Met, MoMA or a movie theater.

Rip255Since NBA games start at 8am here, there’s a big void in my mornings that I’m struggling to fill in the offseason. So I’ll check it out and get back to you.
And Jack Daniels for breakfast just isn’t cutting it.

Bencelticsfan2346ParticipantThe real question is whether or not his per 36 stats and efficient shooting will translate to 18+ minutes a game also it will be interesting to see if they pull a Josh Smith and move him, a mid range shooter to the three point line I doubt they would after the whole Josh Smith debacle

GBeeParticipantHopefully he’ll instill some toughness in Drummond and physically challenege him in practice. Drummond needs that since he’s soft. He’s strong, physical, solid defensively and comes from a good system. If Pop trusts him, then he’s cool in my book.
I’m fine with the price tag. 6.5 mill is like 4 mill without the cap increase. Factor in the big man premium and it’s pretty fair.

ropeParticipantThe biggest criticism I have of Drummond is that his defense basically consists of getting into rebounding position. He really can’t guard. His is big and springy and doesn’t leave the paint much, so he will block a shot or two a night, but he has the physical tools to be a lot tougher on defense.

SpinCycle88ParticipantVery true. Drummond has said himself that the only part of the game he is most concerned with is rebounding. Most of the time though, that’s ALL he’s concerned about. He’s gotta break that. This Detroit team is shaping up to be a squad that will be reckoned with in the very near future and if he makes the necessary adjustments, they could really go far.

BiggysmallsParticipantInteresting thoughts on Baynes. I liked him in San Antonio and think he’s a solid backup big man.
I’m still struggling to wrap my mind around the contracts being thown around, so 7 mil is apparently a good price for a backup big.
He’s never going to have plays run for him, nor should he be spending a lot of time more than 12 feet from the basket so I disagree with the idea that he’ll play alongside Drummond, which is fine. He can play 12-18 minutes a game and more if Drummond is out.

xJumpManxParticipantThey have to overpay to get anyone to go there. Atleast if this backfires it wont be for the amount of Josh Smith or Ben Gordon. Im not sure if there is a least desired location to play for curently than Detroit.

ropeParticipantDrummond to Baynes is not as big a drop off as it might seem. Baynes will be a good backup for the Pistons. Especially when you see that free throw %, you can see situations where he is in the game rather than Drummond. They will be a pretty good 1-2 punch next season.
