IndianaBasketballParticipantJust finished watching the disappointing Pacers lose to the 76ers smdh. Been debating with my friends. Who’s the better player to build around? Joel Embiid or Ben Simmons? Let’s assume both players stay healthy.
I think it’s Embiid and it’s not even close.

Hype MachineThis is the most textbook example of recency bias I have ever seen.
If my team just got beaten by Philly, Id be searching for answers too.
Its Ben Simmons, and its not even close.
Big Men are nothing more than Ancillory bit-parts in todays NBA. The last time a team built around a traditional Big-Man won a ring was over a decade ago.
Prove me wrong…
Find me a recent bigman MVP…or even a contender.
Ben Simmons is the next Magic/Lebron.
Stop drinking that Indiana hooch. Its unhealthy.

D7H7NParticipantIf you told me to choose between KAT or Simmons right now I would take KAT lol. With the advent of KAT, Myles Turner, and Embiid…you’re going to see 5s who can do everything including shooting the 3. Right now it’s a point guard’s league but that’s going to change.

holefillers1Participant76ers aren’t storing Embiid in an annex building and he isn’t a ball rack. He can score from anywhere on the floor. Best three pt pcg in league

negguaryParticipantYou have both of them on the same team to build around!! #trusttheprocess

IndianaBasketballParticipantHuh? Dude you’re annoying… Searching for answers because the Pacers lost? Drinking Indiana hooch? What the hell do those things have to do with my question?? Recency bias? What are you talking about lol? I’ve been high on Embiid for years.
I just think Embiid isn’t your typical "traditional" big man. This guy shoots it well. He pick and rolls or pops. He can even attack defenders on closeouts. He can play with his back to the basket or face up. The skill, touch, footwork, etc. It’s crazy. He defends, rebounds… He can do everything.
I like Simmons too, but he can’t shoot and has to dominate the ball to be effective. I think you can build a more successful team around Embiid. I also just like the passion Embiid plays with.

rongataParticipantI know embiid is playing great to start the season but its only 10 games, I would need to see a lot more out of him. It just seems like Simmons has all the tools to be a franchise changing player.

Andv1 WaitingParticipant@ IndiannaBasketball.
I’m going to assume both players stay completely healthy from now on(hypothetically speaking) and by literal sample sizes as of right now. The only thing that makes this question slightly challenging is that Joel has 3 years of NBA life experience which does give him a current edge over Simmons before game 1 even happens.
However if I am comparing the two sample sizes we currently have: One was Summer league with not legit NBA rosters with Ben simmons carrying the team
and
Joel is carrying the team during Regular season against against legit NBA teams.
The Summer league Ben simmons struggled to take over at the right time and was more fitting in than carrying the team/take over like you would expect from your franchise player.
vs
The regular season though with Embiid leading the Charge the 76ers have run an offense through had Embiid carry the team and got the team/crowd going..The funny thing is the 76ers have been competitive in most games go figure..
Also do you mean build around on the 76ers or do you mean on any team?
If the 76ers: that has been clearly established you make Joel Embiid your 1a he has a greater skill set as of right now and you make Ben Simmons you 1b to help carry the team and be a point forward as he seems like he more of the Wiggins personality rather than KAT personallity Embiid has.
if you mean who to build around on an individual team: That depends on who the coach is if it is a stan van gundy/Popovich you have to go Embiid as they have offenses/defenses that can make Big Men extremely successful.
If it was a guard excentric coach like a D’antoni or Kerr you have to build around Simmons as they will do better in their system..
Me personally I would Choose Embiid as he reminds me of Hakeem O but with a 3 point shot and most fans who know who Hakeen was knew in his prime he was pretty special as he did get taken over the myth that is M.J
also side note: Joel Embiid was in the same class with Wiggins and everyone hyped Wiggins up as the next T-mac/franchise player getting the articles and such yet it was Embiid who was actually outplaying Wiggins in the conversation for the number 1 pick until his back fracture happened…So what Embiid is currently doing comes as no surprise to me lol.

ChoppyParticipantCan’t answer that question until we’ve seen Simmons actually play in an NBA game. Of course, based on their body of work so far, you’d have to take Embiid. We just don’t know how good Simmons will be until he gets on the court (I’m guessing that this is what Hype means about ‘recency bias’).

HitsterParticipantEmbiid is looking scary considering the minutes limit and he hadn’t played really for two and a half years, although he was drafted a year before KAT he has played much less competitive ball and if he stays sound then the sky could be the limit.
Exciting times as we have yet to see Simmons on court and we have Parker, Greek Freak, Porz, KAT, Wiggins,Ingram etc also developing.

BeastMode716ParticipantAnd this seems to be the opinion of just about Everyone in Real NBA circles
Chris Broussard & Jeff Goodman, both big time Basketball journalists will Golden reputations & who Both Destroyed Hinkie for 3 straight years, have already confirmed this & admitted what Phila did worked (provided they stay healthy obviously)
As Insanely talented as Embiid looks already (despite rust & being out of basketball shape still) I read numerous reports that Simmons was easily the best player at Sixers training camp — now after seeing Embiid for a handful of games, try to wrap your brain around how good Simmons must be for witnesses at training camp to make that claim.
SCARY

Mr. HookShotParticipantI’ve said this before in another topic but building around Embiid is risky as he seems more injury-prone, at least that is the consensus around the league. Building around one guy that has a larger chance of getting injured is risky, as your team might fall apart when he get’s injured.
As an example, look at what happened with the Rockets between 2004 and 2009. They had two of the best players in the game in McGrady and Yao Ming. However, as one of the two ways always injured they were unable to make it to the finals, even failing the qualify for the playoffs during their time together.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI agree with you 100%, but was looking at the situation hypothetically if both players were 100% healthy.

HitsterParticipantWe have to see how the 76ers look when everyone is sound, they are still in a similar situation to last year with a rookie doing well but the team losing. The thing that is making it different is the sort of numbers Embiid is putting up on his limited minutes and him and SAric already look more polished players than Noel and Okafor.
It is fun to think if Philly had taken Porz over Okafor last year what a frontcourt of Porz and Embiid would look like – the work scary springs to mind. Saric would be perfect 6th man on that team and then throw Simmons in.
We have jumped on the Embiid bandwagon a bit but if he is this good after 2.5 years out, what will he be like when he is fully unleashed and can play 30mpg plus. I can fully understand Philly taking it carefully with him, watching how he recovers from games and reviewing his minutes. The Oak is under a minutes limit too and no doubt Simmons and Noel will be eased back in carefully wehen they return. Ironically of the young core Saric is probably going to play most minutes this season.
