It finally allows them to suck again. And i mean really, really suck. They were going nowhere with their core intact. With rondo likely to miss a large portion of time next year they have a legitimate chance in the Andrew Wiggins bonanza….at the very least a high pick in a weak draft. Even if Rondo does come back healthy, I feel that his effectiveness will be compromised without KG and Pierce around.

Yes, gerald wallace has a bad contract, but dumping jason terry helps to offset that.

Yes, the Nets are likely to be good….but no one has any idea where they will be drafting (for the celtics) in several years.

Bottom line in the NBA is that you usually have to suck before you can succeed, and it finally gives them a long term blueprint for success.

Yeah Philadelphia and Boston both entered themselves into the Wiggins race with tonight’s moves. On paper this 2014 draft seems like a better one than most to tank since there are a number of excellent prospects expected to enter.

The difference between what Philly and Boston did is that Philly gained assets while positioning themselves to be in the Wiggins sweepstakes; the Celtics really didn’t acquire anything of value.

Didn’t acquire anything of value?!?!? Tons of cap space, plus THREE first round picks. This nets team is old and could definitely be rebuilding in 3-5 years when the last 2 picks come up.

This was a good trade for both teams. Boston is in prime position for most ping pong balls.

      76ers did very well too.

The Nets two best players are under 30. Lopez is only 25 and will likely be there long term. I would think possibly the 2018 pick could be in the mid lottery but the other picks will all be around 20 or so. They didn’t get that much cap space because the 10 million a season they will be paying Gerald Wallace for the next 3 years. They were in a tough spot with Pierce and KG being a package but they didn’t do a great job with this trade in my opinion…it still may have been the best they could do though because of the odd circumstances.

Tons of cap space? They still have Gerald Wallace’s contract coming over. That alone is pretty detrimental. And the 3 first round picks at this point don’t look to be anything of value. The 2014 pick will undoubtedly be a late 1st, and with Prokhorov’s desire to win regardless of how much money he has to spend, the 2016 and 2018 pick will likely be late 1sts as well. Plus they traded up to get a guy they likely could have gotten at 16, and he still wouldn’t have been a good pick at 16.

Doesn’t Boston always magically do this. Find a way to get high draft picks and turn around what looks like a long rebuilding process in one year.

Exactly…even if they can’t land wiggins they could land a top 5 pick and ship him for a star (alla jeff green for ray allen) in ’07.

Ainge is a master at stockpiling assets, unfortunately i think he totally whiffed with Kelly Olynyk, but who really knows yet?

Its always hard for fans to except their team trading long time superstars and someone that brought you a championship but getting 3 first rounders for a guy in kg who is contemplating retirement and if he doesnt this year for sure next year and pierce who is still good but no where near who he was in 2005 is a huge win for the celts they werent going to compete for the title anyways. They gave terry to much money as well. At least with wallace they will have an asset next year that is tradeable. Long term celts win big time short term nets are contenders for one season instead of first round losers

I’m not even sure the 2014 pick goes in the 20s, i think it could be late teens.

No depth for the Nets right now, injury prone older guys, and they are playing for a title, not regular season record.
By the last 20 games they will likely be nursing injuries, benching KG and/or others, and getting ready for the playoffs.

They are not going to risk their playoff run to spite boston and lower the draft pick with a better record.

And Boston’s roster doesn’t even look that bad right now. If Rondo was a better leader, he would accept this challenge instead of asking for a trade, which i think he will unfortunately.

Wallace is overpaid, but he’s a pretty good backup small forward behind Green, who could realllly step up with Pierce gone and a year removed from heart surgery that affected his stamina and focus.

Sullinger might be KGs equal this year as well, and Olynyk is ready to pick up some of the scoring load right away.

And Jordan Crawford is as good as Terry and getting better, and is a capable 3rd string pg as well as sg.

Reggie Evans is a quality player, and the nets will miss him.

Between Bradley, Lee, Wallace, Evans, and Sullinger, the Celtics have plenty of guys to maintain the Celtics’ defensive identity, which is the biggest worry with a rebuilding team.

If Rondo can rise to the challenge, this team could go .500 or close to it.

    1 Rondo/Bradley/Crawford
    2 Bradley/Lee/Crawford
    3 Green/Wallace/Lee
    4+5 Sullinger/Bass/Olynyk/Evans/Humphries/Melo/Iverson

Whether Kelly Olynyk projects well athletically or defensively in the league remains to be seen. Although his shooting and offensive skill is proven and if you can shoot in the league you can stay in and have a lengthy career. Olynyk can score in so many ways and will be able to score in the NBA. As far as basketball IQ goes Kelly Olynyk is number one in this draft. He will have a big role with Boston next year and be fed minutes with Garnett and likely Bass gone. Ideally Sullinger, Olynyk, Fab Melo do not seem like a versatile enough frontcourt although those three dominated College basketball with a winning record and National Championship goals every year. They know what it takes to improve and how to hide and compensate for their weaknesses. They will produce and improve offensively as a group but if Melo will hide Sulli and Olynyks lack of athletisism and emerge as a very good help defender Sulli and Olynyk would get more playing time and opportunity to score. Should be fun to watch them lose 10-20 more games since they are in Toronto’s division.

No way Rondo is on this roster by seasons end. The C’s just have to wait to move him because they need to show the league that he’s back from the knee

The Celtics won’t get Wiggins be realistic.

They still have a top 5 PG in Rondo, Wallace isn’t a scrub he’s a younger, athletic and better defender than Pierce who was awful in the playoffs. Bradley can play defense probably better than anyone in the league if he’s healthy.

They have Humphries who can get some rebs and score and Reggie Evans a rugged defender/rebounder.
Jeff Green can flat out score and he’ll get plenty of touches, They have some young 2nd year players in Fab Melo, Sullinger and solid players in Bass and Courtney Lee.

As for Pierce he’s over the hill and shows it by fading in every playoff series now. He can’t guard younger more athletic players like George Hill, Lebron, Melo. KG still has something left but the Nets moved depth so they will need to improve the bench. Terry will be 36 next year his mins and numbers have been dropping.

if olynyk starts he might be their only 3 point shooting threat in the starting 5……in addition the team has no rim protection, no good iso players (besides an injured rondo who still cant create his own shot) and two undersized guards. I guarantee the celtics are one of the NBA’s 5 worst teams….

It’s tough to know what else Ainge could have done, but this doesn’t strike me as the greatest first step in re-building. Taking on £30 million over 3 years for Gerald Wallace? Plus the other pieces aren’t young guys who are going to develop. Olynyck’s an interesting pick but the C’s only real hope is to suck and luck out because they don’t have many trade chips left (obviously depending on Rondo’s injury status, but I would be more inclined to build around him than trying to trade him because you’re not getting great value for him at the moment). Two picks in the next three drafts may help but picking in the 20’s is a crapshoot as we all know. I think behind doors the C’s were hoping both Garnett and Pierce would retire because they could have cleared cap space without taking any on and still been in the same position (maybe better because ironically, they’d be slightly worse as a team and thus closer to completely tanking without Humphreys, Wallace and Evans).
