Let’s try to get a consensus of who are the best coaches in college basketball’s high major and mid-major conferences.

    here’s mine

    American – Kevin Ollie, UConn

    Atl-10 – Archie Miller, Dayton

    Acc- Coach K, Duke

    Big 12- Shaka Smart, Texas

Big East – Chris Mack, Xavier

Big 10 – Tom Izzo, Michigan State

Missouri Valley – Greg Marshall, Wichita State

Mountain West – Steve Fisher, SDSU

    Pac 12 – Other Coach K, Utah

    SEC – Calipari, Kentucky

    WCC – Mark Few, Gonzaga

I like your list. I was pretty surprised but happy that you put Coach K (Utah) on there rather than Sean Miller. Glad to see him getting recognition

I think he is going to get back in the NBA and do a hell of a job. I would like to see him take Flip’s spot at Minny. Miller can coach but offensively Larry is a wiz. His Utah team will consistently be a contender in the pac with zona, until he leaves… but zona is the one getting the 5stars, Larry is getting jucos.

I based my rankings off of what have you done lately.

Bill self has won 10 big 12 titles in a row. I know Kansas attracts a ton of talent, but that’s a pretty remarkable feat when you consider the overall talent in that conference over the years. I think smart is a fantastic young coach but I couldn’t put him over self right now.

Agreed. I also don’t have a problem with putting Tom Izzo at the top of the Big10, but I think Bo Ryan should be 1B to Izzo’s 1A. Never finishing lower than 4th in the Big10 since he got there with the types of guys he recruits and the system he runs is pretty impressive.

look, Coach K’s resume speaks for itself.  He’s a hall of famer and has 5 national championships.  I am a known Duke hater obviously.  For all that he has won, no coach should ever lose to Mercer and Lehigh with 7-8 Mcdonald’s all americans.  Tony Bennett has done more with less than any other coach in the ACC.  He doesn’t get the mcdonald’s all americans, but his teams are well-coached, disciplined and tough.  He’s the best defensive coach in the conference by a mile.  Coach K, a noted defensive guy has had some horrific defense teams recently.  Tony Bennett is 5 national titles behind K, but with the fringe top 100 guys he gets compared to K, he is the pound for pound best coach in the ACC.

Agree that Bennett is a really good coach that gets the most out of his players and is successful despite not landing McDonalds All Americans.  However, the flip side of the argument is part of being a great coach at the college level is recruiting.  I am a Cuse fan so I would like to make the argument that the best coach in the ACC is Boeheim……but that isn’t possible when Coach K is in the same league.  He is hands down the best coach is in the ACC and arguably the country.

I’ve always thought of Coach K as an offensive coach.

I think Lon Kruger is the best coach in the Big 12…Bill Self is a great recruiter and a good coach but if you traded his talent with Kruger who has done nothing but coach up 4 and 3 star recruits his entire career, you will understand where I’m coming from. He’s turned programs around at Illinois Unlv and Oklahoma.

He is super underrated, however just something about Shaka that gets his guys to dig deeper and play 2 maybe 3 levels than they would play anywhere else.

Vesley was so terrible for my Wizards that he’ll never be forgiven by me.  Still is claim to fame is kissing his smoking hot girlfriend on draft night, but the guy was awful in the NBA.  If I was an NBA GM, I would stay far away from this guy.
