BallerScriptParticipantBen Simmons – Scottie Pippen
Reasons:
- Both very athletic wing players
- Both great rebounders
- Both have some point forward tendecies
- Both are good passers (Ben Simmons is a bit better though)
- Both have a high basketball I.Q
- Both can play the 3 and 4

ChicagoCaseyParticipantI believe he’s an slightly more athletic Lamar Odom.
Your comparison to Scottie Pippon can be said about anybody in the league that can switch to the power forward position. Off the top of my head I can name a couple of players that have a lot of those similarities as the ones you described. You can see those same comparisons in Nic Batum, Greek Freak, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Luol Deng, Jabari Parker, Paul Pierce, and some more that’s not at the top of my head.

whiteflashParticipantThat’s exactly what he is, a young slightly more athletic Odom. People comparing him to G. Hill and Magic are obviously too young to have seen ’em in their primes. People also forget that Odom was the #1 prospect in the country and was being called "The New Magic" by Slam magazine. I like Simmons game, and think he projects better than Odom ’cause he seems like he takes the game more seriously, but make no mistake, Lamar Odom was a beast. His relative lack of success had nothing to do with basketball ability, it had to do with him being a fruitcake and not putting in the work to be great. Think Simmons WILL put in that work. So basically, he’s Lamar Odom with his head screwed on straight.

Rip255I’m going with Magic Johnson.
Supreme Passing, ball handling
High IQ, A winner, natural leadership
Average Shooting, similar size
No look passes, finishing with either hand around the rim, body control
Coast to Coast ability…a nightmare in transition
Both can/have played any position from 1-5

ChewyParticipanthaven’t seen a full game of him yet, but I am so excited to watch this LSU team this year. Usually when people throw out names like Pippen and Hill I laugh, but everything I’ve read says he is the real deal. Just saw LSU has a 6’6 PG too. They are going to be huge.

chaParticipantmix between Grant Hill and Lamar Odom.
He’s got Lamar Odom’s versatility and size and he has the mental makeup and similar hops of a Grant Hill that will enable him to make a bigger impact than Odom.

whiteflashParticipantJoe Alexander was an absolute freak athlete. Simmons is NOWHERE NEAR as athletic as Alexander. He’s a much better basketball player though.

adumParticipantLooool it was obviously sarcasm. I don’t think it’s fair to give him a comp yet. At least let him play a college game first.

Rip255Is there some kind of unwritten rule that states prospects cant be compared to all-time greats?
When was a young player ever compared to a top 20 all-time great on this site?
Only all time great Ive ever seen anyone compared to is Embiid/Olajuwon….and if hes top 20 then only just…
Several times a decade….a truly great player comes along. You cats are terrible at predicting them though.

Buckets21ParticipantDeshawn Stevenson was compared to Michael Jordan by this site. Scottie pippen and Magic Johnson were used as comparisons in this very thread. I think you could easily argue too many players are compared to all time greats rather than the average players a lot of them end up being .

Rip255I was the one that compared him to Magic and Scottie Pippen would barely crack the top 30 players all time.
No one gets seriously compared to MJ, Kobe, Lebron, Bird, Kareem etc. If they do…its a ‘poor mans’ version or theyre only comparing some aspects of their game.
Occasionally a 15yo gets compared to greats like Thon Maker and KD…but never NCAA players.
I reckon people are too scared of being accused of jumping on the hype train. If youre not….who is the next megastar comparison?

sweaterflexParticipantIt is more difficult to compare new stars to previous greats the more the game changes. The NBA has had maybe 5 transcendent stars drafted in the last 15 years, and by and large they are fairly unique. LeBron was compared to Magic and MJ, a pretty unprecedented combo. Durant is occasionally compared to George Gervin, but no 6"10 player has ever possessed his natural scoring ability from the perimeter. Curry is maybe vaguely like Pistol Pete, but even that barely does his pull up 3s justice. Anthony Davis may be the most freakish, his efficiency is most similar to a combination of young Kareem and young Amare. The only player who has an easy comparison is Chris Paul, the perfect (if common) undersized floor general. Maybe DeAndre Ayton is compared to David Robinson, but I suspect the next game-changing star will be so successful because he is incomparable.

Rip255Simmons just dropped another 26pts, 5 rebs, 8ast against the Sydney Kings…the pro team from Australias biggest city (pop 5mil)
Averaging 24, 8 & 6 so far on tour.
LSU getting great experience and have been super impressive.
Not much coverage from this site…but Rip n Run has your back.

bumbleb33Participantpippen is a vastly superior defender. ben simmons looks OK on defense but he will never be a great lockdown defender, especially in the post because of his relatively short arms

HitsterParticipantI don’t see the Magic comparison, Magic was a legit great PG who just happened to be about 6ft 9ins. Simmons is a combo forward who may be a point forward type player. Often the best player on the team if he is an SF or occasionally a PF can lead the team on assists if they don’t have a stand out PG. LBJ has often done this, that is the only way I could see people comparing Simmons to a PG like Magic.
I never saw Grant Hill play at 18/19 years old so I cannot compare that he was like then to Simmons but I still like the Lemar Odom as a resonable mid level comparision for Simmons with maybe Hill as the upside.

RigelzParticipantTo me it’s very diffcult… i don’t know, even if i could agree with Lamar comparison…. the worst thing i’ve heard i’ve about this guy is "a taller Lebron", not in this forum….

Rip255I neither agree nor disagree with that statement
However thats who Chad Ford compared him to in his latest big board. Altho Ford seems to lack credibility by some in these parts.
Simmons says he models his game after LBJ too.
