goddagParticipantIt’s time for Philly to move on from Ben Simmons. He disappeared in the Atlanta series, like he did last year in the playoffs. You can’t have your 2nd best player sitting on the bench at the end of the game because he’s not playing well, when you need him.
Here’s a guy that was suppose to be one of the best all around players in the league producing under 10 points a game and sitting on the bench at crunch time in the playoffs. This is the second year in a row that they were suppose to be the team, and will be sitting at home watching the rest of the playoffs. He’s not quick enough to make steals like other point guards in the league. And his shooting and especially his free throw shooting is terrible.
It’s time to see what you can get for him. They need to move on and get a better PG. It’s going to be hard to get what they need for him, because other GM’s have seen his non production as well.
Emblid got exposed for the second year in a row also.1+ - Posted on: Sun, 06/20/2021 - 6:53pm #1249361

OhCanada-ParticipantJust gotta stop expecting him to be a Lebron type player and realize he’s more like a Rodman or Ben Wallace type player and just appreciate hs game for what it is and understand his flaws. He’s the best defensive player in the league and one of the best playmakers but he isn’t a scorer and shouldn’t be closing games offensively. Brown accepted this, Doc accepted this.
That pass to Thybulle was a bad look though…

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but a Simmons-cj McCollum trade would make some sense for both teams. You can say what you want about Simmons shooting but he is still one of the most versatile defenders in the league; and Portland is a team that badly needs defensive help. It would also lessen some of the playmaking responsibilities on lillard. Philly might need to throw in more since Simmons trade value may be lower due to his disappearance in the playoffs. If the sixers can find a way to make that deal and sign Kyle Lowry in free agency it would give them a new look and possibly give them a better chance to compete for a title next year.

NorrinRaddParticipantInteresting take on Simmons and the state of the 76ers…
Simmons was awful at shooting like he usually is. Trae Young had an awful shooting night, but advanced despite that. Atlanta just played better than Philadelphia did game 7. Not sure I would move on from Simmons, his defense is still a big reason they got there, but it’s so easy to jump off that Simmons train because of the league’s “what have you done for me lately” nature, so I get it. He really should work all off season on shooting drills. I’m not sure what kind of deal they could get for Simmons if they actually do consider a blockbuster trade. That would be a brutally stupid move to start over though. They better get something great in return if they do trade Simmons and not get role players and picks for him in return.
Also, I wasn’t sold on the way Philadelphia was constructed as a team to win the chip. They have a bunch of talented pieces that just don’t quite fit together. On the other hand, Atlanta/Milwaukee should be a fine series… I bet the NBA is kicking in screaming though. It’s not exactly what the league generally hopes for I don’t think. I think the league was hoping for a bigger market showdown like Brooklyn/Philadelphia. It’s been a strange year and playoffs for sure.3+- Posted on: Mon, 06/21/2021 - 6:42pm #1249392
goddagParticipantYou have to be kidding about this trade. You really think Portland is going to give up one of the best scorers in the league for the a guy that shoots 34% free throws, passes a ball to a team mate so he won’t get fouled and have to shoot FT. WOW!
He plays great defense but what he gives away not being able to shoot cancels all that out.0

sniperParticipantLots of teams would love to have a guy who’s an elite defender, elite playmaker, excellent rebounder. The Sixers need Simmons to be more than he is because Embiid is not a closer.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Embiid is at his best when he looks like Dirk on offense. A lot of midrange jumpers where he just shoots over people, occasional 3s, postups when he has a mismatch. But he keeps trying to get to the rim on his own, and it’s always some kind of misadventure. And if he’s forced to pass against a swarming defense, it’s like an automatic turnover. It just looks like he doesn’t see the court well, and can’t seem to predict anyone’s next move. And since he’s not as good a shooter as Dirk, or even LaMarcus Aldridge, what you’re left with is a go-to scorer who’s going to let you down more often than not.
Tobias Harris is their most complete offensive player but he missed a few layups last night and disappeared for stretches in the series.
Simmons’ value is at an all-time low now because of the narrative placed on him. I don’t know if they can get an elite scorer in return for him, which is what they need.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantSame story, different year. Front running and mentally soft. There is your process. At least Philly fans let their owners pocket massive profits for a half decade selling them on a fairy tale of it being easy to build a title team.

sniperParticipantI wonder if Philly could reunite Lowry and DeRozan next year. That would be cool. How much of a pay cut would they take to join a semi-contender?

OhCanada-ParticipantOffensively Demar is the perfect compliment to Embiid and Harris.

HitsterParticipantBen is owed about $146 over the next 4 seasons so Philly will have to take considerable salary back. McCollum is a good trade shout. He is pushing 30 so has timeframe suits Philly well. Simmons would give Blazers options in a number of positions especially on defence and gives them another playmaker around Lillard.
GSW also sprang to mind as they have Wiggins and even Green who Simmons could be the long term like for like for. Plus might have T-Wolves pick.

BKGingerSnapParticipantWhy would anyone want to trade for Ben Simmons? Does anyone think Ben Simmons loves basketball or actually tries to get better in the offseason? For all of his athletic gifts, there has been no development in his offensive game and he is basically still the same player offensively he was at LSU. His free throw shooting has gotten worse. Free throws are about consistent, repeat practice and a desire to improve. When Giannis struggles at the free throw line and does his very long routine, I know that it at least comes from a place where he is trying to do all he can settle down and do his best to drain them. Giannis also isn’t afraid of taking free throws even if missed over half of them against the Nets. Ben Simmons clearly is scarred of free throws. And once a player starts avoiding free throws, there is a chance the player never recovers and falls apart like Andris Biedrins or Antoine Walker. Passing up an easy dunk and instead passing to Thybulle was the worst in moment playoff decision since JR Smith. Given that Ben Simmons has already been paid, spends most of his free time in Hollywood with Kendall Jenner, and chooses to shoot with the wrong hand (as Kevin O’Connor pointed regularly over the last 5 years), I don’t believe in Ben Simmons to ever come through when it matters.

goddagParticipantYou hit the nail on the head. I remember Hack a Shack from years ago, when teams would foul Shack instead of letting him get an easy dunk. That’s what teams are going to be doing to Simmons real soon. Foul him repeatedly and put him and not someone else on the line.
They’re not going to let him pass to a team mate in crunch time. They’re going to foul him.
The money he’s making he should be hiring a shooting coach to teach him to reinvent his shot.
And why would any other team give up great talent to get this guy? There’s cheaper players out there that can score and defend that won’t cost you so much.1+
