mouchy18ParticipantWhy would a team draft beal over Barnes they are the same player accept Barnes is bigger. Same strengths as shooters, same weakness as ball handlers. Yes Beal is a SG & Barnes is a SF but I believe Barnes has the ability to defend a play both positions..If you like Beal you should love Barnes
What are your thoughts on the comparison ?

SpacegrassParticipantI am honestly divided on about 5 or 6 guys after Davis. I can’t even figure out who should go 2-7 so I can’t decide who the better player is. But based on the trade DC pulled off yesterday I think Beal will be going to DC.

PulseGlazerParticipantBeal’s a better ball handler, defender and shooter. Barnes is bigger and more athletic.

mouchy18Participant@ Pulse based on what? I watched Beal play closely in college, he did not create nor did I see him lock any body down & his shooting % speaks for it self…who came up with the lie that he is a defender? Beal admits in interveiws his handle is questionable so how can you say definitively he is better…judge with your eyes

Memphis MadnessParticipantGood question Mouchy. Well if you are looking at a 2 then go with Beal, or if you need a 3 then go with Barnes.
If you are the Cavs at 4 with MKG off the table then it is basically a toss up. If you take Barnes at 3 then in the second round you might
be looking to draft a guard like Will Barton, Tony Wroten, Doron Lamb, or John Jenkins. If they take Beal at 4 then you look at Quincy Miller or Jeff Taylor in the second round. I think Beal/Barnes is a toss up for the Cavs. I think either guys fit. It will just affect what they do in the second round.Wizards at 3 probably need a 2 guard more. The Bobcats at 2 should take the best player on their board at 2 then take some complementary pieces with their other picks.
Here is a cool idea. What if Beal drops a bit, then the Hornets trade Eric Gordon for a pick to get Beal (basically a younger version of Eric Gordon) plus another young player or another draft pick. If Beal is there at 6 then they could trade Eric Gordon to the Blazers for the sixth pick, plus 40, 41, Nolan Smith, and cash.

sheltwon3ParticipantI think if you believe Barnes is a two guard than you take him over Beal but i think Barnes best position is small forward. I believe he can play both but you could limit his game if you try to get him to play out of position.
I actually like Bobcat to take Barnes which leaves Beal for Washington.
I think because there is so much talent in this draft and yet none of the talent has that established talent like in some years, a lot of Gm’s will get steals that fell because of so called red flags. When it is all said and done this draft will go down as one of the best.
I think you have talent opportunity and that tends to lead to minutes and production. A lot of players are hurt this year and may miss some time next year which will open up minutes for player that maybe would not have gotten them and also some team like Hornet are going young and trying to develop their young players. Bobcat may be in the same boat. Wiz seem to be going the opposite direction but I think Beal or Barnes will get a chance to start on a veteran team.

bswervesParticipantBarnes > Beal. Period.

PulseGlazerParticipantBeal played a bit of 1. His handle is weak for that, but that feat would be utterly beyond Barnes. For that alone, Beal is a better ballhandler. And defender? Honesty, I’m going off reports from workouts that had Beal outplaying Barnes despite being far smaller, particularly on D. Beal’s shooting percentage increased as he went and he has a prettier stroke. Could I be wrong? Sure, but that’s where I stand for now.

ThepessimestParticipantI love Beal’s game but he reminds me of a less talented OJ Mayo. That isn’t an insult but after watching him play I don’t get the #2 pick stuff. That is extremely high for a guy who never dominated games in college. At least Mayo would have 25 point, 30 point, outting in a loaded Pac – 10. I like his game but I want to see more. I would have love to see him dominate or carry his team. I really think Barnes is going to play well in the NBA in a more open game in the right system. I think both will be solid but I favor Barnes.

JordoParticipantNiether one of them are great ball handlers. Although Beal is a slightly better ball handler than Barnes. Beal is the better playmaker. Only averaged 2.2 assist but he does a better job than Barnes, who only averaged 1 assist, at getting his teammates involved. Beal played out of position at SF most of the time at Florida and average close to 7 rebs, Barnes avg 5 rebs on a team with John Henson and Tyler Zeller. Not bad for both players at all. Really close between these 2.

ThepessimestParticipantSometimes the system you play in can really mask what you do well. Carolina played a 2 big man system. Whenever you play in a system like that it clogs the paint especially when both play closer to the basket. Also, Marshall had the ball and set the table for almost every shot…tough to get assists when you play with a PG who is responsible for so who gets the shots and when. Just a thought.

ghettosermonParticipantOne glaring thing is that Beal is just a more smooth athlete. Barnes is a great athlete and can be explosive but he just seems at times so mechanical and robotic. Beal has a more natural flow. Barnes biggest issue is not skills related but sometimes you can hear him thinking and being indecisive.

akhan786ParticipantYou can hear him thinking? Woah

JoeJoParticipantThey are not the same player. Beal is a much better ballhandler and passer. I don’t get the criticism of Beal’s ballhandling. It doesn’t inhibit him from getting anywhere he wants on the floor like it does with Barnes. Comparing his handle to Barnes, he doesn’t bounce the ball of his hip or foot like Barnes did way too many times.
Speaking of Mayo, I think what limits him more than anything is how weak his ballhandling is. That part of his game surprised me when I saw him play at USC and it still hasn’t improved. Against Memphis for instance, Paul terrorized him whenever he tried to bring the ball up. Yeah that was Paul but good ballhandlers can hold up to Paul. Mayo was easy pickings.
Beal is a better ballhandler, penetrator, passer and much more active overall on defense. It’s no wonder he’s more highly ranked than Barnes and that a lot of teams supposedly want to trade up for him.

DolanCareParticipantBeal can create his own shot more so than Barnes. Even though FLorida had good playmakers, never once did I see Beal dependant on his other guards. The same cannot be said for barnes

lalailaParticipantwhile i also think Beal shouldn’t be top3 pick but what he does better he is not only shooter what at this moment of his career Barnes really is..Beal is better rebounder shot blocker despite being 3 inches shorter lol..that tells something
