Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantWell this matchup turned out to be pretty one-sided. Fox outplayed ball in the first matchup but it was overshadowed because ball made some clutch plays down the stretch and UCLA got the win. This one wasn’t in question. Ball clearly couldn’t guard fox and it was evident from the opening tip. Could this potentially have an impact on draft stock at all?

mavsatxParticipantKinda looks like lonzo doesn’t play much d at all. Hands down by his sides and looking lackadaisical. I like fox’s tenacity today.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantIt helps Fox, doesn’t do anything to Lonzo. Fox probably locked himself into the 5-7 range with his tournament play thus far.

Untouchable JParticipantNot even a hot Take but this game poses red flags for Ball
All year he hasn’t scored bc he hasn’t had to, or so we thought
Now when they needed it, he has nothing. Other than 3’s he really can’t score. Can’t get past defenders, can’t work the pick nbroll, doesn’t go to the rim to finish despite seemingly having hops. What’s the use bein 6’6 if you never use your size on offense or D
Maybe it’s my fault for not paying attention but this 1 game is enough for me to put Smith for sure ahead of Ball (have no idea how they have him at #9 pick), as well as Jackson. Also Fox.

machu46ParticipantYeah this is more or less what I’ve been telling all my friends praying to draft Lonzo all year. His vision/passing ability and spot up shooting is good enough that I’d still probably take him in the 6-10 range in this draft, but I think scouts (based on what we’ve heard through the media) are severely overlooking Ball’s flaws, which I think may very well be fatal to his game at the next level.
I think Ball’s best hope in the NBA may be as a SG honestly. He’ll always find the open man as a passer, but I don’t think he’s capable of breaking defenses down the way a PG needs to be able to.

OhCanada-ParticipantI dont think it raises red flags for Ball. Fox was hitting his free throws and his long jumpers. When that happens he is unstoppable and will do this to just about anybody in the world.
As for Ball you gotta understand his game. He is a pure PG. Hes not a guy that looks to get his stats or calls isos on every possession like todays superstars. He really is like a Jason Kidd type player because of how he manages the game and uses his teammates to provide oppurtunity for his team. His best qaulity is his basketball IQ hes very smart but then you factor in his height, athletisism and skill and thats what makes him such a sexy pick. Hes the ultimate floor general really. Not many people expecting him to be this far along this early though and he still has a long waybto go in his development.
Although I do think that Josh Jackson is clearly ahead of him and Jayson Tatum is right there with him as well.

SubZeroParticipantSaying he was hitting his free throws (which he always does) and his long jumpers (which he always does) takes away from the fact that he got in the paint literally whenever he wanted. Lonzo or anyone else checking him couldn’t stop him from getting where he wanted

holefillers1ParticipantJason Kidd was a great defender. I watched Lonzo get beat one on one by his 15 y.o. brother on that ESPN special last week. Also Kidd had no three pt shot when he entered the league. I agree with you that he has a pure pg mentality but his game is going to translate to more of a Deangelo Russell because he can’t defend and likes to shoot the three.

BeastMode716ParticipantJustin Holiday brings the ball up court & only once the pressure is off does he hand off to Lonzo in the half court set
Any team who drafts this kid Better have a starting PG already b/c he’s a Combo guard & he does not defend Anyone
I would take Monk or Fox over him. If Justin Holiday was not on the floor guarding Fox & Ball had to guard Fox then Fox would have scored 50 points in his sleep.
Ball was guarding Monk & Monk was lighting him up

binetParticipantClearly not a good showing from Ball.
Ball’s defense at the next level is clearly questionnable when you watch this, and it is supposed to be a good aspect of his game. His motor was bad, and his decision-making as well, which showed some mental weakness he cleraly should not have when heralded as the next J.Kidd. He threw some nice passes and once again showed his vision, but the shots he chooses to take, his lack of effort, concern or ability to show any toughness down the stretch are red flags towards his overall mental ability. He clearly was exposed on both ends of the court.
That concern is even bigger with arguably his UCLA teammates being better than Fox’s teammates in this game, with Adebayo and Kentucky bigs completely outclassed by UCLA’s frontcourt at least until Welsh got fouled out (Leaf was bad and tired at the end of the game, Welsh’s absence was really flagrant).
Given Fox already outplayed Ball in their first matchup and Ball did have other bad showings against NBA guards this year (thinking Arizona here), there clearly is concerns and a red flag here.
Ball clearly should not be discussed as a potential number 1 pick anymore. Just too many red flags and an obvious talent gap between him and Fultz.

I get what you are saying about Ball not being a new Jason Kidd but the comparison to Deangelo Russell isn’t that good either.
Russel was always less of a PG than Ball, he even became a SG lately in Lakers and tbh I always thought the writing on the wall that he isn’t a true PG,may be in few years he can turn into Harden type of PG (but less dominant) and I doubt this will be the case for Ball.
I don’t know which comparison is the best for him, I mean obviously every comparison has its flaws as every player is his own self but with Ball it is a bit more interesting. Sometimes I think he can be a rich man Calderon.but even this one doesn’t feel that good.lol0 - AuthorPosts
