Austin Rivers’ career has been a big disappointment so far. He should’ve stayed in college and worked on his fundamentals. His NBA future looks very cloudy right now.

I don’t know about his chances with Boston either, despite the familiarity there.

I feel, Danny Ainge will put Rivers in every position to excel once he is done wheeling and dealing. Ainge is the man with a plan. A solid core with 2-3 incoming veterans will have this group back into heavy discussion.

    Core – Smaht/Bradley/Sullinger

Austin Rivers has a great first step and can get to the rim.  The trouble is his shooting has been sub-par and struggles to finish at the rim.

His shot seems to take forever to release.

Still, good move by Ainge.  Unleashes James Young to have a good learning development over the last half of the season.

His contract expires at the end of the season if I’m not mistaken so I’m not sure he is part of their long term plans. Boston is obviously pulling the plug on the season and going into full on rebuild mode with their recent trades and trying to aquire as much cap space and draft picks as possible.

The good news for Rivers is that he will probably get a decent amount of playing time for the rest of this season anyway, which is something he wasn’t going to get in New Orleans. I’ve always been a fan of his game but I’m not sure how well his skill set translates to the NBA. The guy is an extremely talented offensive player and can flat out score. The problem is that he’s very undersized for the 2 guard position and he’s not a distributor, so he can’t play the point for long stretches. He’s also a player that needs the ball in his hands to be effective as opposed to playing off of other players. His best case scenario is probably an instant offense guy off the bench. I believe he can be effective and have a decent career if he can learn to embrace that role.

Hope he gets a chance and plays well for the rest of the season. It would be a shame if his career ends prematurely, because he clearly has the talent.

ESPN reports that Ainge will ship him off as well, possibly to play for his father.

Basically, this is Ainge doing a good deed. He owes Doc for that Championship. The Celtics haven’t sniffed one since the ’80s. This will be very interesting to see if Crawford remains to give Austin the game along with Paul. I would love to have an access pass just to see Mr. Miyagi vs Daniel-San. Crawford will give him nice ISO burn in practice.

Bet there is a lot of media backlash if Doc acquires his son.

Career going about as well as I though it would coming out of college.  Main problem is he can’t shoot, a problem when you are a guard in this league.  I also get the feeling that he thinks he is much better than he really is.  He is quick, otherwise below average talent and shooting by NBA standards.

Is to improve his finishing and get more assertive.  He could be a Jeremy Lin-type scoring point if he improves a lot as a finisher and gets a little more consistent as a shooter.  He still is young enough to make progress if a team is willing to give him a chance.  He actually is a decent spot-up shooter, but, as has been mentioned, his release is too slow to be that good off-the-dribble, which is pretty similar to Lin as a young player.  But he does need to get more aggressive as a finisher and not settle for so many floaters.
