NickWayne87ParticipantA fairly simple question, would you rather be all handles and no jumpshot or a lights out shooter with no handles and why? I’ve got my own take on this but just curious to hear others opinions..

JordanC20Participantnothing feels better to me than making a big jump shot so I’d definitely rather have a jump shot and no handles.

TomShoeParticipantGuys like Tony Wroten Jr./Ish Smith are a dime a dozen.
A guy like Steve Novak/Kyle Korver will always have a place in the league.
Shooting just has more value nowadays.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantIf Steve Novak had crazy handles he would still be in the League like Lamar Odom was for years and if Kyle Korver was 6 foot like Ish Smith he would be lighting up a YCMA Rec league right now.

prophetmeirParticipanteasy lights out shooter with no handles
Reason : once you a lights out shooter that creates so much spacing on a basketball court, A simple pump fake or quick jab step would get your defender off track due to you being such a good shooter. For instance look a stephon curry he doesnt have the best of handles for a pg but his shooting makes up for it and keeps his defenders off balance at all times.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantFairly simple answer to a fairly simple question.
Jumper. Guys that can shoot, stay in the L. Plain and simple. Eddie House couldn’t do anything but shoot and he made a nice niche for himself in 11 years. Ray Allen is damn near 40 and teams are still going to be lobbying for his services when his contract is up.
I mean, would you rather be a streetball legend or an NBA clutch shooter?

NickWayne87ParticipantThat last sentence I like the way you put that. Coming up playing basketball I could always shoot. My dad bought me a hoop when I was like 4 and by 5 or 6 I was shooting on it a regulation height making baskets consistently. But I was out in the country our ground was uneven and I never developed a handle for most of my younger years of hooping. Coming up playing ball I would always get picked close to last despite being one of the better shooters. Over the years I developed a moderate handle but It wasn’t until I was 14 that I said, Ok i’m gonna work on my handle to make it the best it can be just because I wanted that respect. By 16 my junior year of high school my handle i’d say above average and by my senior year i’d say it was on that ankle breaking ball on a string I can get my shot anywhere at anytime level. Overall I’d say you guys are right because I was still able to impact the game and come off screens to score despite not having a great handle. But to me breaking down the defense on your own and getting that respect is a whole lot of fun. Ahh if only I could go back I would’ve done so much more with basketball, had an older cousin that went D1 and pro and a younger cousin thats now division one….it could’ve been me as well but that’s another story…..

JordoParticipantMaybe I’m weird but id rather have a great handle. Id rather be a player that can be a ball handler, facilitator, set up others, protect the ball etc. And just pray my shot gets better over time. But if I wanted to be in the league forever I’d take being a elite shooter that can’t dribble a chew bubble gum at the same time.

NickWayne87ParticipantCurry DOES have handles….great ones in fact….what he doesn’t have is elite speed and athleticism to get by defenders at the NBA level consistently but his handle is so crafty that it sometimes makes up for it. If it’s know that you have no handles they’re not likely to go for the jab steps…maybe the pump fakes…They’re going to run at you to chase you off the 3 point line or wherever you like to catch and shoot from. They’re gonna make you put it on the floor so someone can try to steal it from you. If Curry didn’t have handles they’d do that with him and he wouldn’t be near as good of a player as he is.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantI’d be happy with either but I’d probably go against the norm here and say I’d rather have the handles if I was also a good finisher. Especially if I could still work on my shooting as well. Having handles is a better foundation to build off of if you ask me. But being a great shooter would give you consistent playing time and a nice role in the league.
Curious, which is a better feeling- Nothing but net 3 pointer or crossing someone over?

Sewok15ParticipantAs someone who could handle the ball like a champ but had trouble putting the ball in the basket I would want to be a shooter. Scoring the ball is the name of the game and I would have been much more successful as a shooter.

ChrispyParticipantGod Shammgod. Sham had the greatest handles I’ve ever had the privilege of seeing in person, but had no J. He played 1 yr in the NBA because of it. He had a very long career overseas, but never got another real shot (no pun intended) at the L. Rip Hamilton never had much handle, but made a living running off screens baseline to baseline for jumpers. I know who’s career I would rather have had…
0- Posted on: Fri, 10/25/2013 - 7:13am #845367

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantDo you think RIP would have made it one year in the League at 6 foot even? I think we have to compare players of the same height, because if Shamgod was 6’7 he would still be in the NBA ala Shaun Livingston or MCW.

sheltwon3ParticipantI would want to be a tall player(7 footer) because when you can get a million dollars for just being tall and so called professional in your mid 30’s. Jason Collins would have never made the NBA if he was 6’9″ or shorter but because dude was 6’11” or so, he stayed in the league for years even though, he numbers were terrible and he was only really good of D for post players.
I have seen players that can shoot but could not get their shot off never make it in the NBA.
I have seen players that can dribble not make it in the NBA. I have seen all around players in college not make it in the NBA.Tall players(7 footers) that are not really that good tend to make it even now when there is a less of demand.

NickWayne87ParticipantI could find random guys in the hood between 5’10 and 6’5 that with the proper gym routine for 6 months to a year could be on par with pro players like the skill is there but the conditioning repetition probably isn’t. How many 7 footers do YOU know????? I bet if you were 7 feet and never played organized ball in your life if you hit the gym and got in game shape you could walk in and get an invite to training camp at least lol

ItsRainingNegsParticipantI’d take all handles and no jumper. If we’re talking about the L, put me at point and give me the best shooters in the world. Being able to completely control the ball as set up teammates or drive to the hole for and one. And don’t get me started on having a dominant center. Pick&Rolls would be a luxury. But if I had to pick a position it would be center. Andre Drummond has elite potential AND Jennette McCurdy? Fuck him haha

XYRYXParticipantA jumper over handles is the best choice for me. But in the end I trade both for beeing Dennis Rodman. No handles and no jumper but the geratest rebounder, one of the most versatile defenders ever and a winner! If you make it so far without any offensive arsenal you are special.

Bob BallParticipantIn my opinion becoming a better ball handler is much easier then becoming a better shooter. Being a great shooter is just a more effective skill. id rather have four shooters and 1 ball handler than 4 ball handers and 1 shooter.

RObin PadillaParticipantShooter with no handles…
Because every team need shooters to space out the floor. Which means you will get paid for what you do best.. Shooters most of the time have a longer career than ball handlers…
Even if its ball handler with ways to take it to the rack i probably will prefer a shooter..

There are no great 6’0 shooters in the League that don’t have handles, the Ish Smith type of guard has a shot roam around. When we talk shooters then we are talking 6’4 and up guys (Korver, Redick, Rashad Lewis). Guys like Steve Kerr and Craig Hodges don’t get to stay in the League nowadays. Lamar Odom and the early Jason Kidd are examples of a guy with crazy handles but no jump shot, let alone Magic Johnson, a young Lebron James or Rondo.

MkadozaParticipantWell, since court vision wasn’t mentioned, and I have that pretty naturally, I will take the ball handling.
Guys like Wroten and Ish Smith are also turnover prone and can be sloppy with ball. Guys like Rajon Rondo control the flow of the offense and defense and create opportunities for shooters.
AND, not being able to shoot doesnt mean I can’t attack the rim with ability. I guess I just look at ball handling as pick and rolls without turnovers, being able to split double teams with regularity and the ability to break down a defense at will, a la young Tony Parker.
