According to John Calipari NBA Scouts are saying UK Fr SF James Young might be the best player on this year’s squad and may potentially be the #1 pick in the upcoming draft. What’s the overall feeling from our local draft experts?

Have to see him play but I doubt he will be in discussion for #1. When is the last time a SG went #1?? He will spend alot of time this year at SF and he won’t play SF in the NBA.

  He’s a swingman.
  6’7 with a near 7 ft wingspan. I’d say he’s more SF than SG.

    Every site has a different height for him, from 6-5 to 6-7. Even earlier Coach Cal said he need to work on his core and legs because he was to light in the azz to play college basketball.

      He IS hitting the weight room and is responding well to the weight training. Not only does he have the length to eventually defend SFs, but he still needs work on his handle. Usually the SG is the 2ndary ball-handler and has better breakdown ability. Handling and breakdown ability are not strengths in James’ game.

6’7 is better suited for shooting guard. Especially if he doesn’t have huge size or strength. Kobe is around 6’7.
Ideally, I would want a small forward to be 6’8 or 6’9. The top small forwards are. LeBron is at least 6’8 and Durant is at least 6’9. Carmelo, Paul George, and Rudy Gay are also 6’8. Kawhi Leonard might actually be on the small side for a small forward, but he has freakishly long arms. Chandler Parsons is actually listed at 6’9 3/4 with shoes.
There are some HUGE small forwards that these young guys will have to compete with. I think 6’8 for a small forward should be the standard now for small forwards who want to be lottery picks. That’s an elite position today. It also helps that some of those bigger small forwards can also play the stretch four spot.

Kobe is certainly not 6-7. And James Young is about 6-6 maybe 6-7. I could see him as a small forward because he is more of a smooth athlete then a explosive one. He also has a good wingspan at close to 7 feet. I would definately take a look at him if I was a team in need of a wing in the mid to late lottery.

Not number one but I can see people questions why didn’t he go much higher in a few years when it’s all said and down. He has the tolls to be an big time player down the line if he turns out to play anything like Micheal Redd which I don’t think is that bad of an comparison than watch out because Young has more lift and is a better rebounder than Redd was coming out as an prospect.

I really like James Young and while #1 pick is certainly a stretch I don’t think top 5 is. He isn’t ahead of Julius Randle in my opinion but he is way ahead of the Harrison Twins.
