Throughout this whole lockout, I have heard people say that eventually the players will cave in once they miss that first paycheck. But what about all the money they have made for the last couple years, or even last season. I didn’t look it up, but I believe the NBA minimum is atleast 400,000 Dollars. 400,000 Dollars! And that’s only the minimum! Plus NBA players shouldn’t have to spend any of that for road trips and such, cause they get 100 bucks for every road trip. So how many of you guys that are working, earn more than the minimum? And I bet those of you who even come close to it are very thankfull gratfull for what they have, but toearn millions for severall seasons, and then to need MORE money? Do they have to live like kings? Do they have to have that brand new leather sofa, or the 90 inch big screen TV, or do they have act like they live to eat(Eddy Curry). I don’t really buy any of the owners crap either about them losing money, but I also don’t buy that the players would be in financial hardship if they have earned millions for the last several years.

Again, I would like you guys to weigh in, cause I may be wrong.

I really love your thinking on this!

It’s their fault if they live outside of their means……When Shane Battier got drafted he said he was buying himself a Volvo not a 600 Benz……Can’t speak on his life style now becuase I have no knowledge of how he is living now but I commended him for being "tight" on his money

You’d think not but I think alotta guys go beyond their means in terms of money because they plan based on future earnings. They lease things and still pay a mortgage, rather than buying straight up, which is why alot of them can go broke because they dont have any assets later on.

I agree with the point about leases and mortgages with NBA players.NO WAY should anyone making NBA paychecks pay a mortgage. Guys like Antoine Walker going broke is ridiculous. You hear about the money he made in his career, and then they say he goes broke and was paying a mortgage? I just can’t feel sorry for someone like that. You have to be spend extremely poorly for a very long time and be very dumb finanically to do that.

The average salary in Russia (where I live) is around 900 dollars (actually even less than that), which means that the MINIMUM an NBA player can get is like 440 times more that the average person here gets, that is just so damn crazy to me.

And Kobe is going to make 30 million in two years, I can’t even imagine that amount of money.

Have you ever saw the shows curse of the lottery? I know it sucks but when idiots are handed millions of dollars they are still idiots. Having millions of dollars does not make them one bit smarter and thats the biggest problem. It blows my mind that Eddy Curry and Antonie Walker could blow through 60 MILLION dollars and have nothing to show for it. I dont know them personally, but I have a pretty good idea that idiots will still be idiots if given millions of dollars….. You cant fix stupid

Exactly, some of us who even hit a fourth of that live in comfort, so why the fucck is Antoine Walker bankrupt, after paying hte same percentage on taxes that we, do?

You don’t even need to be cheap! You just need to not be an ultra dumbas$ to not go bankrupt. You really don’t even need to save any money if you are earning millions. Just spend wisely.

That is why I think It is ridiculous that Kobe is asking for 1 million a month from Turkey. Calculate how long it will take you guys to earn a million for you WHOLE LIFE!

On TV, these guys talk about money like it’s nothing. They say D Will got ripped off by playing for 200,000 Dollars a month. Give me a break. Whoever earns 200,000 in the US for a WHOLE YEAR is a lucky man.

Again, correct if I am wrong, but that is just my personal view and opinion.

the average salary is 900 a month, not a year, right? The minimum is 400000 a year, which would still be 37 times higher than the 10800 a year a russian should make.

But that’s not the point. No NBA player needs the money, because if he wants just to earn his living he can move somewhere else. A NBA player could easily make around 100000 dollars a year playing in Brazil, which is more than enough to live confortably, and thats on a developing country in which basketball isn’t even popular.

Well it all depends on the person, a player making the minimum who can manage their money, will be in better shape than a guy who makes millions of dollars and cannot manage money, so some people can get through it, while others are stuck in a whole…

The problem is that everyone wants the next big thing weather it be the next sports car, mansion, etc.

If you ever seen mtv cribs you know what im talking about. huge kitchens with fancy stuff in it and not Sh!t in the fridge, closet full of clothes, shoes that they wear only once. Its kind of sad, they should be investing there money and paying everything off upfront not putting it off.

I don’t know about you guys, but when i get money, i save that sh!t and don’t spend unless it on something on need, i will wear the same clothes, shoes for years as long as they fit, and look decent enough to wear. I can assure that you will never see me buy clothes more then $100 in a year and $100 for 2 pairs of shoes(may not be the new thing but guess what they’re gonna get fu(ked up the same weather they’re $50 or 200 and will last just as long). Right now im saving money so i can buy tools for autobody and paint tools so i can start my own mini business.

Conclusion- I know nba players have financial advisors but those people really need to start doing their jobs, or players need to really start listening to them and not their so called friends who are their only for the money.

The thing is, the NBA Makes HUGE money off of the Players. Though there are more important jobs than being a Proffessional Athlete, Its supply and demand. The Nba makes bilions of Dollars and you want them to give the players less? Thats not fair. Also, nobody is forcing the owners to Pay players hundreds and millions of dollars. The owners are billionaires too, this is pocket change to them.

As far as NBA players living outside of their means, nobody should criticize them. We live in a world that glorifies living outside of your means, the average U.S savings account is in the negative. People don’t save, and people are not content to spend ONLY what they have. This lockout is simply a microcosim of the larger economic problems. Regardless of the salary, people are always trying to live above their means, (exceptions seem to be rare today).

I think the owners are being dishonest about their profits, and don’t think they’re entitled to more as they’re not responsible as they think they are for the product that people pay to see, I’d pay to see these guys scrimmage at the park. Then again, players don’t need to make 15 million to play a game. I would like to see a CBA that is closer to what the NFL has, you can’t argue with the results they get, players rarely get big contracts then stink up the rest of their contract like is common in the NBA(thanks to gaurenteed contracts), and any team during any given year can win it all, which doesn’t happen in the NBA.

The unfortunate reality is 75% of NBA players experience money issues 3-5 years after retiring, its amazing but they choose to live a life of extravegance and luxury beyond their means. They spend lavishly on cars, houses, women, jewelry, entertainment, entourages, and other luxury items that we dream about, but very few have any concept of fiscal responsibilty and investing their money wisely. Some hire financial advisors that swindle them becuase the advisors know the players dont actually know how much money the have, other players invest in terrible business ideas that flop, and others literally drain all their money on child support payments, and in the rare case of Eddy Curry he spent all of his money on double cheeseburgers and sour patch kids. The evidence supports that 3/4 of the league will prob feel some kind of money strain if this lockout continues for several months even though they knew it was coming, they live paycheck to paycheck just like the rest of us, only their paychecks have 2 or 3 extras 0’s on them.

@llPerez, I didn’t say they earn too much, I said that considering the ambount they earn, none of those guys should have financial problems. Do you think that it is normal for Antoine Walker to make 100 million dissapear. What I am saying, is NBA players can still have a lot left over if they lived a normal life with comfort, with some luxaries.

And the differences are trivial. Maybe chose the 60 inch TV over the 90 inch. Maybe go with a nice looking car, but somthing a bit less expensive than an Escalade. Maybe using your teams trainers over paying a ton of money for your own personal trainer. Are you going to die if you choose the lesser of these items? You can still live a wonderful, luxerious life with your millions, while still leaving a nice amout left over.

@M-Dymes my bad dude I confused NFL players and NBA players, 78% of NFL players experience financial hardships in that period of time, while 60% percent of NBA players experience financial hardships in that same time period.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1153364/index.htm

That 60% figure is actually from the NBAPA, who did a study on former NBA players a couple of years ago.

Very interesting and thank you for the link.  That number is extraordinary considering the amount of money these players are making.  This tells many things…

    1.  Many players are not saving nearly enough money during their playing days

    2.  Many players are not prepared for a career outside of basketball

    3.  Medical issues perhaps?  Law?  Gambling?  Drugs/Alcohol addiction?

    4.  Players need to be better educated on becoming financially savvy individuals.

    5.  Spending habits continue into life beyond basketball.
