MadDogParticipantEven before the Kevin Durant injury it was pretty clear that (by and large) the 2014/15 MVP was a 2 horse race between Durant and LeBron. Now with Durant potentially missing up to the first two months of the season, is there any likely situation which doesn’t have LeBron winning MVP, providing he is healthy? With the ‘homecoming’ storyline and the mainstream media wholly on his side again, I just don’t see a legit challenger. In fact the only possibilities I can see are either Durant coming back early and clearly outperforms LeBron (mirroring last year), or Rose returning to form then leading the Bulls to the 1st seed and both of these bank on LeBron having a down year (for him). People have suggested Westbrook but even if he does dominate early when KD comes back its still his team. Thoughts?

RooneyParticipantOnly other person I could see competing would be Melo and that’s if he is the scoring champ and if his team is good.

nick5354ParticipantIf Anthony Davis has a break out year like many of us think and leads the Pelicans to a 6 seed in the playoffs in the deep west, he could be a roughie. Playing anywhere up to $50 too.

druneave3ParticipantWith Kevin Love looking amazing early on (in both physique and performance) and a perfect fit next to the unselfish LeBron he is poised for a huge year. He and Kyrie will boh perhaps steal some MVP love from the best player on the planet. He is still the obvious front runner but if here are few alternatives.
The Finals MVP could continue his humble domination on both ends of the floor, quietly leading the best franchise filled with HOF’ers in a possible repeat. Just how good is Kawhi Leonard when he is doing this with THAT cast and crew? Old yes, but still.
Russell Westbrook could get off to hot start and continue even when KD returns. Leading the team for a good stretch could spark a special talent given his confidence.
Steph Curry could put up some monster numbers with teams so focused on stopping his "brother." He would need to lead his team and new coach to a top 3 to 5 seed in order to make a case. This will be extremely difficult in the loaded West, so difficult there is a slight chance they could even miss the playoffs, but I’m really high on the Warriors this year.
Anthony Davis……… not just yet buddy. Your time is near.

Moon RiverParticipantIf they really do put it together and challenge the Cavs in the East, why not the former MVP Rose? He would be an easy guy to root for given what he has gone through the last two years.

Memphis MadnessParticipantChris Paul IF he has a year with 20 points, 13 assists, crazy steals and leads the Clippers to the best record in the league.
But, yeah, LeBron is CLEARLY the front runner.
He will be chasing a RING more than STATS so stat wise there might be another guy or two with equally gaudy stats.

roni3ParticipantI hope you guys realize its been 1 week since Durants diagnoses. The season is also 2 weeks away. So if his time line is 6-8 weeks then Durant will miss only 5 weeks max of the season, and 3 minimum. I don’t understand why so many people are making it seem like Durant has no shot at being MVP or that the thunder could no longer make it to the finals now that Durant is "missing time" when it reality he should be much more rested (all that time off in the summer) and more driven then ever to prove his doubters wrong.

rich.homie.mitchParticipantCan’t go wrong with Griffin, on a winning team and was 3rd in MVP votes last year. Has been adding to his game a while now. Working on a consistent jumper.

machu46ParticipantI think Griffin could do it if things break a certain way. Nobody ever imagined Derrick Rose would win the MVP the year he stole it away from LeBron either.
The super dark horse would be Steph Curry if Golden State ends up a top 4ish seed.
And I also agree that if Melo somehow carries that Knicks team to a top 5 seed or so in the East, he could have a chance.

GrandmamaParticipantDid he win last year? Did Jordan win every year? Obviously he isn’t a lock, and there are plenty of situations where he wouldn’t win.

TallmanNYCParticipantYes Lebron has a great chance. But I will agree with there being a scenario where Love scores nearly as many points per game as Lebron and Westbrook scores more than both of them and Love splits the vote a bit with Lebron and Westbrook snakes the the MVP. And also Anthony Davis plays both sides of the ball with scoring Per Game that is a touch higher than Lebron.
In support of this theory. Love is going to score. And score efficiently. NBA pundits will be shocked, Shocked I Tell You, that scoring is actually easier when you are playing next to Lebron versus being the number one option. So K Love’s efficient 25 points per game will happen again, but this time on a title contender. The story will be that Love has gotten better. Diet, fitness, etc. All bul&$#%#&@!e. He was great last year, like the several years before. But still, when Cleveland is a contender, it won’t all be attributed to Lebron.
Westbrook will continue getting better. But this time he will be in a situation where he really should shoot 35 times in an NBA game. Yep, he is going to score some points. OKC will win some games too. Probaly stay above 500. It will all be attributed to Westbrook. But in reality half of the ability to survive without Duran will not be because of Westbrook but will be not playing a Center who can’t rebound, block shots, score, pass or defend in space. Yeah that guy is called Perkins. Bench him and unleash the Thunder.
Oh and the US just sent a bunch of guys to play the World. They dominated. But it was unclear if Anthony Davis had changed jerseys to the other team at halftime (while down 20) if the US would have been able to hang on. Davis was much better than anyone else on the US team this summer. That is saying a lot. Though actually, considering who stayed home, not that much.
