Marc Berman of the New York Post argues could look to trade for Carmelo this summer. Now I have though this might happen if:

    1. The Celtics strike out in free agency this summer

    2. The Knicks price is low

    3. Melo is willing to play PF for the Celtics. This year he was much more effective at the 4.

The question I think is what price would the Celtics be willing to pay for Melo. In order for the trade to work, they would need to renounce Amir Johnson (likely happening anyway), Tyler Zeller (also likely to happen), Gerald Green (also likely to happen), and Jerebko (they probably want to keep him, but are probably willing to renounce him).

Next, what will the Celtics give up. First, sorry Knicks fans but forget getting either of the Brooklyn picks. Jaylen Brown is also likely out. In terms of draft picks I imagine the Celtics would be willing to give up one of the following first rounders: their own 2018 pick, the Clippers 2019 pick, or Memphis’s 2019 pick. I know the Knick would like Crowder, but I highly doubt the Celtics will trade him. The best I think the Knicks can get is one of the three first rounder I listed, a couple of second round picks (the Celtics have lots of spare second rounders), and either Smart or Rozier. I know this may sound dissappointing  to Knicks fans, but the key here is unlike some other potential trade, the Knicks do not have to take on bad contracts to make the dollars work

So what do people think? What will the Celtics be willing to give up to trade for Anthony and is it enough for the Knicks to pull the trigger?

I don’t think a frontline of Horford and Anthony is going to do them any good. They do need a legit go get your own bucket kind of guy which Anthony is but that’s such a high price to pay for such a high risk move.

If they trade for Anthony, doesnt their roster flexility basically go down the drain?

That’s why they would only do it if they strike out in free agency.

If the Knicks want Anthony gone then they may not want too high an asking price but would Boston want him I wonder. They could chase a top FA this summer who is a lot younger than Melo – Hayward and Griffin spring to mind.

Sorry, but Boston , Brad Stevens are a ball movement team. Anthony is the anti-ball mover. Won’t happen.

If the Celtics are willing to take Melo, his lack of defense and lack of ball movement, I say don’t get too greedy with Boston.  A 2019 pick from Memphis, 2nd rounder and maybe Marcus Smart would be ok.

The interesting point about Smart is that he could be renewed this summer and his contract extension will kick in for 2018-19. With the contracts that guys were getting last summer – I could see Smart being after a very nice deal or at least signing an offer sheet which Boston might have to match.

Boston can get him tied up this summer but I’d say he’d be looking for well over $15 million a year probably nearer to $18 to $20 million when you factor in they can draft a top young backcourter this summer for a lot less guaranteed money over the next 4 years, I can see the logic in moving Smart.

They would be in a much better position if they didn’t pay $30 million per year for Al Horford.
