treytalkssports.comParticipantAnthony Davis went down with a shoulder sprain in tonight’s game. It seems like he has had that injury before at least once. I think multiple shoulder sprains might be a concern because the injured shoulder becomes weaker and more prone to injury, much like multiple ankle sprains.
Is this a concern for one of the youngest and most productive big men in the NBA?

river09ParticipantIn a word, no. It’s a shoulder sprain, something that usually can be cured by just simple rest (especially if he’s only had a couple). A lot different from an ankle sprain where the ankle is under so much more routine wear and tear to the point they break down.
Just some reference both my ankles and shoulders are both shot (ankles from basketball shoulders from swimming). Constantly spraining my ankles is a much bigger concern when I hop into a pickup game than accidentally tweaking my shoulders.

river09ParticipantBefore someone jumps on me, no I’m not trying to compare myself to a professional basketball player but in terms of playing basketbal you can do long term damage not managing a sprained ankle. Much like swimming with a strained shoulder. But for basketball a shoulder isn’t as key as an ankle so it can be easily protected and completely healed without setting the player back.

ChrispyParticipantas long as that is all that it is and that he rests it accordingly. As someone who has severely sprained his left ankle (one foot jumper here!) at least 9 times, including 3 stints in casts and one roll so bad that I broke my foot just below the ankle joint, shoulders are even more serious. I have a partially torn rotator cuff in both shoulders and let me tell you… no bueno. I did non-surgical rehab when it first happened ( in both cases off rebounds where I had the ball and someone jerked my arm backward) and I now wish, in my 30’s, that I had gone under the knife in my early twenties. I will have pain in my shoulders so bad that I need to drink myself to sleep if I dont have meds. Not often, but often enough. If it is acting up I can go weeks without even getting a shot up at the local gym. I am without insurance (soon to change… thanks Obama!!) and once I am I will research surgery. That said, shoulders are abused as much as ankles and we should hope that the trainers put AD’s future ahead of his present.

Toronto16ParticipantHe desperately needs to bulk up to avoid these little nagging ticky tack injuries

cargathusParticipantI think its just as bad if not worse especially because hes a big man. Even though his offensive arsenal is different from many big men he still gets a large percentage of his points in the paint. This means that hes going to be hacked a lot the more he develops. Anytime you try to dunk the ball and the other team is fouling you hard while your trying to jump up ala dwight than your really susceptible to strained shoulders. In his case I agree with the above though…he REALLY needs to bulk up.

samosasParticipantI’m really hoping he doesn’t have Brandon Roy luck with injuries.

DolanCareParticipantI just hope NOLA has a good training staff. Shoulder injuries can get severe if one isn’t on a proper weight lifting program.

river09ParticipantYes his frame is light, but it can handle more and putting on bulk will solve tick tack injuries like this.. There is a massive difference between ankle injuries like Steph Curry experienced and a sprained shoulder. Davis just has to get stronger and this won’t affect his game. Weak ankles can be damaged beyond full recovery, that’s very different than having to bulk up.
