Tonight Wiggins went for 57 pts, 13 rebs, 4 blks, 2 stls, while shooting 24-of-28 from floor in 111-59 win over Marietta JV.

Whats even more impressive is the fact that this Sports Illustrated article came out today…

and Wiggins was not happy with it. The article talked about his fathers cocaine use, his questionable work ethic and other things he obviously didn’t like. Wiggins tweeted this after the article came out…

“Don’t believe everything you hear, don’t believe everything you read!!!”

The fact that he had a game like this (even if it was against questionable competition) after he was ticked off because of the article, definitely shows a competitive spirit that will serve him well moving forward in his career.

What’s the ”JV” stand for in Marietta JV ?

Usually means the JV team of a college. The teams we see on tv are the varsity. The Jv we never see. Most prep schools play against alot of JV college teams and some juco’s on their schedules.

Sorry…was a JV College team…which sounds good…but usually those teams are garbage. Still, 57 is 57.

Andrew was apparently not happy about the article, along with others associated with Canadian/Toronto basketball. It tried to make some major issues out of a few minor things, like linking his two months with Ro Russell. Plus, did not paint his dad in the most positive of light. Think Andrew was super motivated from it and felt slighted, especially considering that he did not exactly get the "Best Prospect Since LeBron James" Jabari Parker treatment. Nothing against Jabari, just saying that he got a much more positive major write up than this wannabe exposee surrounding Canadian talent. Guessing Pete Thamel has not gained to many supporters in the Canadian basketball community with this one.

Let’s take a step back here, his 57 points may not be impressive to some of you guys because he’s basically an NBA player right now, but it’s very impressive to me, he’s 17, most of those guys are 18-20 years old.

I have seen JUCO all americans play against University JV teams and not score anywhere near 57 points, you guys gotta remember Andrew is a one in a million talent, but 57 on some grown men is still impressive, how many HS kids you know can drop 57 on a University team, let alone their HS rivals?

Just cause he’s more talented than your average highschool kid doesn’t mean he shouldnt get his props 2.

I don’t know what the big fuss about the article is all about. What I got put of it were facts that really didn’t Andrew Wiggins in a bad light. The part of about his father only spoke about his suspension because of drug use… nothing more. It mentioned he played for 3 different highschools but that he qualified for college with his SAT scores.

I could imagine as a polite shy kid more attention to him would/could be annoying but there has been many worse stories written about people.

I posted this in the news and really like the way this guy broke it down. Understand that it is not meant to be a slander piece, just definitely can be taken as a bit of a slap in the face to Canadian basketball players in general. As Neate Sager writes in this piece:

The only real beef with Thamel’s tone was seizing on Wiggins’ backstory (his former-NBAer father Mitchell Wiggins’ heavy hand in his son’s recruitment and their ties to notorious Ro Russell) to paint a negative picture of Canadian hoops. What does, "How such a talented player potentially could be sent to such a volatile situation epitomizes the futility of Canadian basketball for years" even mean?

All sorts of fault lines loom for talented young basketball players. Who thought Wiggins would be above that, or above having his father calling the shots on his recruitment? Is it valid to call attention to the fact grassroots basketball has a seamy underbelly and Canadian ballers with NBA dreams can be as much at risk of trusting the wrong people as the American counterparts? Of course. It’s a problem, eh.

What’s unfair is to single out one future NBA superstar and imply it could all go awry for him because he’s Canadian. At least Thamel affirmed the sky’s the limit for Wiggins. You can take that to the rack.
