Andre Drummond summer league

Drummond posted another monster game today in the summer league 23 points and 18 rebounds and is averaging 15.7 points, 15.0 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.7 steals in the summer league. Now I know it is only summer league but he just looks so flat out dominant and add in the fact he is off to train with Hakeem, I do expect a beastly second year out of him. It is funny how much a year can change things but to think Thomas Robinson was selected 4 picks ahead of him and is now on his 3rd team.

What’s with the knock on T-Rob? Drummond was a steal, but I wouldn’t consider Thomas Robinson close to a bust yet. He was never given an opportunity with the Kings’ poor ownership last season. The Rockets were a terrible fit and McHale refused to play him. I’m sorry for going off topic but T-Rob can still be a great player in the league with the right fit and opportunity. If Aldridge leaves Portland that opens the doors for T-Rob to finally get his chance.
Now… back to Drummond…
He is definitely looking like he will take that next step. The Summer League has been a great source of basketball for me to watch this summer. Getting to see young guys like Olynyk, Drummond and Oladipo is just amazing. I am really liking the first look at some of these new players. I didn’t know Drummond had such a great rebounding game until now, that among other things has been the biggest surprise. Can’t wait for the Las Vegas games to start tomorrow.

I liked Drummond coming out of HS…never understood why he dropped in the draft. I guess it kinda proves that one year in college really doesnt mean much as far as scouting goes.
The only problem is that its SUMMER LEAGUE…
Im not saying Dre wont take that next step…but every year its the same old story of someone ripping up the summer league (last year it was Josh Selby) and then not really doing much in the season. I think Dre will be a star in this league, but i doubt it will be next year…just saying.

We’ve seen him do this in the NBA multiple times, with a 29-11 game against CLE, an 18/18 game against MIL, as well as other impressive performances throughout the year. Drummond has nothing to prove, nor are his performances indicative of what he might do during the season. Not because its summer league like you’re point out, but because we already know he can dominate like this in the NBA.

  i agree, which is kinda why i like the josh smith signing for them, he gives them an incredibly talented defensive pf, that can play alongside monroe at center, while drummond can rotate in and the entire rotation can shift.

Agreed, he looks ready for a significantly bigger role this year. What’s surprised me the most is how quick/active his hands are on defense, without fouling too much.
Looking back, I really think a lot of teams (Ahem… Charlotte and Sacramento) are going to regret their selections while Drummond was still on the board.

IMO there were 3 tiers to the top 5-7 players last year.

Anyone else you could possibly consider for your top 5.

  What are your tiers based on? Because potential wise Drummond is there with Davis if not higher. The difference is Davis’ skills projected impactfuly and cleanly to the next level while Drummond was more of a question mark because he was all physical talent. If both reach their ceilings I’ll take Drummond over Davis.

  Lillard was in that top tier, he was flat-out amazing in his rookie year and will continue to grow. I feel that Drummond, Davis and Lillard are in their own tier.
  However they would be closely followed by Barnes and Beal who are flat out ball players as well. I need more time on Waiters, but he may be there as well

while drummond has put up some extremely impressive numbers, he is still sooooo raw offensively.. not to mention he’s going 3-13 for free throws so far..

  I’m pretty sure he shot under 50% from the floor too. Out of all his shots I could probably count on one hand the FGs he converted that weren’t tips or dunks, which is right in line with the touch that he showed last yr (shot 40% from the floor on non dunk or tip attempts).

Even with Drummond’s offensive limitations, you can almost guarantee 10 rebounds and 2 blocks with very good man to man defense. And again, even with those offensive limitations, give him a true point guard and watch what happens to his scoring. Knight, and I love Knight’s game, is not the player to get Andre easy looks a la Nash for Stoudemire.
And he may not be the best big in the league, but I can’t think of another center in the NBA that I would want for the next 10-15 years. He’s still 19. 19!!
