prophetmeirParticipantIts so funny how the whole Anythony davis vs Andre Drummond conversations were awhile back. Drummond is going to be a good player just trying to figure out what stan wants and trying to be more an offensive big men. He also plays with Josh Smith and Brandon jennings that will hurt anyone.

GBeeParticipanthe’s being forced to think and do more than just rely on his athleticism. this is the best coach he’s ever had and he’s being held to a higher standard.
the problem is that he has a bad basketball mind and has made very little progress skill-wise. his feel for the game is still awful on both ends of the floor. on top of that he looks weak mentally, checking out or sulking when things don’t go his way and still getting pushed around by players much smaller than he is. his intangibles are, and always have been terrible.

juves4783Participantit seems like he is forcing his offense too much. he was great when his expectations were low and to score off of easy assists and offensive putbacks. i think people keep forgetting that he’s only 21. he came in as a project and kind of excelled with those lower expectations. he’s still got a lot of work and i don’t think you’ll see his full potential for a couple more years.
my career comparison would be similar to derrick favors. survived on athleticism and size and now starting to come into his own.

WetalkinboutpracticeParticipantNo drama really. He plays along side two guys ( Jennings & Smith) who’ve never seen a perimeter shot they didn’t like despite not being historically good shooters. Toss in the fact that he’s playing for a new coach in a new system & it’s also Andres first time entering a season with reasonable expectations. Certainly doesn’t help that his his front court mate (Monroe, not that’s he’s selfish) is out there playing for his first big contract. All things considered you have yourself a recipe for some growing pains.
Havent really had a chance too look over any of his advanced statistics but the eye test says Drumonds still the same guy who has loads of untapped potential. The world just might have to wait a little longer. But it’s going to be fun to watch.
Hell, Boogie didn’t figure it all out ’till this year and it’s his what? 4th or 5th season?

RUDEBOY_Participanthe is still learning how to play the game and not rely so much on his atleticism……being on a team like detroit doesnt help..a bunch of ballhogs,no true point guard and no consistent outside shooters….
the pistons have a bunch of talented players that dont compliment each other…..

Malik-UniversalParticipantbrandon jennings is playing really well so far.. hes not the issue.. andre is forcing his offense like juves said above.. his passing needs lots of work out of the post.. when he takes his time hes way more effective.. hes to strong and big to throw up fade away hook shots like hes done so far.. he will figure it out.. im not worried.. the guy is 21 years old

thunderjerkParticipantSVG is making him post up and that’s just not Drummond’s game. Smith isn’t shooting super great, but he’s not taking threes (thank god).

he_gets_bucketsParticipantStan is putting him in position to take a lot more post shots then he did last year, but right now Andre only has the one baby hook move that goes to every time. He’s shooting sub 40% on post ups but Stan is throwing him into the fire in that regard so he can develop his post up game and not be confined to simply garbage buckets. He may not break out this season, but he will certainly improve as the season goes on and the team begins to mesh under SVG’s vision, and he should be primed for many high level seasons in the years to come if he can take his post game to a respectable level.

Andrew1984ParticipantHe went on an absolute tear in his final eight games last year, averaging 18.4 points and 17.4 rebounds while shooting 64 percent from the field. He then seemed to benefit tremendously from FIBAs. He was such a logical pick for a breakout season.
His first 10 games this year are absolutely baffling, though. Yeah, yeah, new system, new coach, new sets, adjustment period, blah blah blah. That kind of regression is hard to fathom.
I think he’s trying so hard to become a finesse player that he’s gotten away from just out-muscling and out-working people. His strength is his combination of size, athleticism, and tenacity, but now he’s trying to become something he’s not. He seriously looked like Moses Malone in March and April last year, and now he looks like 2013 Andrew Bynum.

GBeeParticipanthe was always a finesse player. there’s nothing tenacious about him either. he gets out-worked on the regular. that’s one of the reasons why he’s a poor post player on both ends. he doesn’t fight hard enough for position. someone with his lower body, width and leaping ability doesn’t even need elaborate moves or counters. theoretically, he should just be able to establish position, seal, power move, baby hook. but he doesnt do that because he plays soft. he plays soft defensively too. it’s unconscionable that a guy with his mass gets moved around by other players the way he does. the role that SVG is asking him to play more requires a little bit of toughness. dre is failing because he’s not naturally a physically or mentally tough dude.

Andrew1984ParticipantSo few players in the history of this league have averaged 13 rebounds or more for an entire season that I find it a little extreme to call someone who has accomplished this soft. He had 18 or more rebounds in 12 games, including six games of 20 plus rebounds! That doesn’t happen by “getting out-worked on the regular” and by being “not a tough dude.”

GBeeParticipantyou must not much watch pistons games then. dre gets routinely pushed off his spot and misses box outs. just about every aspect of the game that involves physical play like setting screens, sealing, boxing out, establishing position, etc, he’s weak at. he doesn’t do his work early and he’s quick to give ground. he gets rebounds because he’s an amazing physical specimen with great hands. quick leaper, area rebounds, agile, slithery with long arms. he also has the benefit of playing on a brick laying team on which he was not accounted for offensively or even involved in the initial offensive play, so he could sit behind the defense looking to sneak behind help defenders for o-boards. but yes, he gets routinely outworked and he plays soft. he’s one of the softest 280 lb players i’ve ever seen. if it ain’t a dunk or a tip he absolutely sucks at finishing, not shooting through contact well or even maintaining balance when he gets nudged in the post. he’s been a giant his whole life and he still doesn’t shoot a proper baby hook, even fading on it. no way a guy his size and athletic ability should be shooting 39% from the floor. that’s sad.

chaParticipantIf you were on this website for the past 5 months or so, you’d figure out by now that he’s my favorite player under the age of 25. Anyway to answer shortly: familiarity. He is still trying to figure out how play defense the way Stan wants the Pistons to. I remember, even in his 3rd year with Van Gundy at the helm, Howard garned a lot of fouls. The Magic’s defense is centered around attacking close outs and funneling players to the rim for Howard to contest. When Andre especially in his 1st year with his 4th coach in his 3rd season, you can only expect him to keep getting into foul trouble. Secondly, Van Gundy wanted to give the ball up to Andre in the low post. Now, I’m all for him to learn how to play back the basket. However, when a player isn’t effective I believe you have to go away from that a little bit and let him play off ball which was his forte’ last year (best offensive rebounder in the entire league playing with an above average offensive rebound in Monroe). Plus, the Pistons do not space the floor well enough. They overpaid Jodie Meeks to do just that and unfortunately he’s been out due to an injury. My only hope is for him to STOP trying to be cute and finish with finesse and instead dunk everything near the rim. And for further proof that he can, ask Mozgov and he’ll tell you that he felt like he going up against Shaq in the first game of the season. Also, he needs to keep going after rebounds. His rebounding is unique in the sense that he’s not the most fundamentally sound rebounder out there but he’s so huge, strong, poweful and long that he gets offensive rebounds with his man drapped all over him.

HitsterParticipantSVG is playing a different system and as said by the guys above Drummond is having to learn to play more in the post. I think that SVG will develop his game long term and he has Sheed there as an assistant coach to help with his shooting etc.
People have to remember that AD is still learning and often a developing player gets figured out so they then have to work on other parts of their game to learn new moves.
I fully agree that the Pistons floor spacing doesn’t help Drummond but I would not worry too much about hias recent quiet spell
