sportspolymathParticipantMany feel the Lakers off season was a failure becasue they were not able to sign LeBron or Carmelo, but the Lakers made some interesting moves and in prome position to make future moves.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

UnbiasedObserverParticipantThe Lakers just threw a bunch of random bodies together just to fill out a team. It would not surprise me if they were the worst team in the West. They are going to be stuck in the cellar for quite some time.

TarHeelRavenParticipantIt’s amazing how far the lakers have fallen and that Tinseltown with all it’s glitz and glamour is not a hot free agent destination anymore. The clips are the far superior team and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Quite frankly, I believe nobody really wants to play with Kobe. I don’t think that’s too far fetched to say. Lin, boozer, and Ed Davis don’t make the lakers significantly better. I think the best case scenario is for the lakers to be a 7 or 8 seed in a loaded west. I don’t see the lakers returning to relevance until Kobe retires and the lakers actually have cap space to work with to reload.

Chilbert arenasParticipantEveryone thought they could make a splash in this off season but threw a wrentch in those plans when they gave Kobe over a third of the caps space. Randle is one of the few bright spots on the roster in terms of the future but the Lakers have never been known to build with young talent. Jordan Clarkson could prove to be a steal.
They certainly overpaid Jordan Hill but at least it’s only two years.
Nick Young wasn’t going to get a four year deal elsewhere but let’s be honest he’ll be putting fans in the seats and keep smiles on faces. Boozer and Lin are stop gaps.
Xavier Henry and Wes Johnson have opprotunities to be stellar defensive players under Byron Scott in a way they couldn’t imagine under DÁntoni.
And I know it’s an unpopular stance but I’ve given up on Ed Davis, at least he’ll be getting minutes.

dcaseParticipantThe second year of Jordan Hill’s contract is a team option. Good chance they don’t pick it up. If Lakers don’t pick up his second year, they will have tons of cap space next year. Everyone aside from Kobe, Young and Randle will come off the books = ton of cap space next summer.

IhateusernamesParticipantI mean seriously, did Mitch and Jim really think they’d be able to pull off a stellar offseason? Melo himself came out and said his decision was always between NY & CHI. You think Lebron was seriously considering jumping to his THIRD franchise in five seasons, if he was leaving Miami it was for home. He knew it, and I think it was pretty clear to the public as well. As far as the restricted free agents that were on the board do you really want to mortgage your future by overpaying to steal a guy like Bledsoe Monroe or Hayward?
And they were never truly in on the Kevin Love deal because quite frankly they just don’t have the assets, for Love or any other marque name on the trade market honestly. They should’ve spent more time trying to convince Gasol he didn’t need a change of scenery. The other worldy power of hindsight, man ha.

ChewyParticipantholding back the Clippers was their cheap (and racist) owner not willing to pay to keep his stars. With a new owner the Clippers will have literally every geographical recruiting advantage that the Lakers have (Hollywood, great weather, major market ect). Plus having Doc there gives players a coach they can truely respect and want to play for.

MopgrassParticipantIt will be a worthwhile season if they keep their 1st round pick and get a prospect or pick for Lin or Boozer at some point. Keeping their draft pick is mathematically possible if they’re in the bottom of the league, but more likely, they’ll play just a little too well and would benefit from a the lottery pick rule change. Chances are it will be a list season. But who knows?

Magic JordanParticipantTough couple years for my Lakers the past few and the next few. A lot of people want to point to this offseason as a failure which I don’t really agree with. Oddly enough I find it leaning more towards a success side, especially from a Lakers fan perspective, not so much the organization. I think a lot of us fans were wondering if they were going to do something stupid, like offering the Max to a player like Greg Monroe, at least I was anyways. Instead they didn’t, they kept their sights set on Melo (Whom I also didn’t want but that is neither here nor there.) and Lebron. Both of which never had a serious consideration into actually joining the Lakers, they were just pipe dreams.
The fact that they didn’t make any blockbuster additions, balances out the fact that they didn’t make any stupid long term commitments… Swaggy P withstanding.
They secured a first round pick for this next season which I project to be somewhere between 18-24 from the Rockets which they will be able to get a rotation player with.
Unfortunately Boozer cannot be traded this year, which is too bad because at the price of his contract he probably holds a little value for a contender later in the year. Boozer at 3.2 is a solid player.
Their draft was a success. I believe Randle will be one of the better players in this class and Jordan Clarkson looks to be a steal.
Where it starts to look bad is the team they are actually fielding. Keeping the top 5 pick next year would be the best thing for the franchise. Instead they have fielded a team that will most likely land in the 6-9 range, thus giving their pick to the Suns for absolutely nothing. Worst case scenario and the equivalent to the NBA hell is being stuck in the late lottery just outside of the playoffs…. to be stuck in the lottery without a lottery pick is rock bottom. There is next to no way this team will make the playoffs. This is where I think Lakers management continues to fail…. Do they really believe they have a shot at the 8th seed? If everything went absolutely right, they would be in a fight for the 8th seed.
Another place they failed is the Coach… I would have liked to see them go with young and hungry, as opposed to a recycled coach but it could have been worse. They could have completed the terrible Mike trifecta and followed Mike Brown and D’Antoni with Mike Dunleavy. Scott will do good by me as long as he gives the majority of the PF minutes to Randle.
I think the Lakers the past few years have realistically had their eyes on two summers. The summer of 2015 where we will see K Love hit the open market, and the summer of 2016 where KD will hit the open market. Their hope was a team like the Cavs wouldn’t make a play for Love, but it’s seeming like they are, and he won’t leave Lebron. I think they are still banking on these two summers and will secure at least one top free agent from the two.
Everybody acts as if they are failing so hard but that’s only because people are so used to seeing them on top. If you want to say they struck out on free agency this year because they didn’t get Melo or Lebron then okay… but I dont’ see it that way…. missing out on Melo is a blessing in disguise because even with Melo… they still wouldn’t have been a contender. They also didn’t commit any stupid long term money.
I think true Laker fans can see what is going on here and can be a little patient, not 76er fans patient but I know as long as they aren’t doing anything stupid in the present, it will be okay in the long run. It’s mostly non Laker fans, aka Laker haters who are making the most noise. No matter if it takes 5 more years to iron everything out, the Lakers still won’t have been down as long as 90% of the other teams in the league.
And LA will never be a Clipper town.
