Maybe I’m a homer, but I think Giannis should have gotten into 2nd team All-Defense.

He averaged about 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, and the Bucks were by far the worst defensive team in the league without him out there (worse than the Suns), but moved to mediocre/average with him out there. That’s even more impressive when you consider he had to carry the scoring load, too.

I didn’t watch a ton of games this year or Philadelphia, but for Covington to be first team is pretty odd to me. I don’t know, did I miss something? The idea that he’s a better defender than Draymond is astounding to me.

I also never really knew Dejounte Murray had become a great defensive player. Is he really deserving of All Defensive 2nd Team? Over someone like CP3? That’s tough for me to respect.

The fact that Philadelphia got two players represented and Golden State and Boston got one is also head scratching to me.

were a top five defensive team that won 52 games when the majority of people got mad at Markelle for guaranteeing they would make he playoffs. They clearly would need more than one player on that level to overachieve to that level. In addition to this, just for life help you lose all credibility when you say I haven’t seen for myself but…..lol…..

Murray is the leading guard in defensive rebounds per game. Covington leads the league in deflections per game. I admit I haven’t seen much of either play this season. But I don’t know how someone couldn’t make an objective decision without seeing all their games.

If Roberson finished out the season he would definitely be a First Teamer imo, but I wouldn’t blame people for leaving him off for missing a pretty decent chunk of the season. Those teams look fine to me

Kudos to Pop for getting another player to fit in his system. Coming out of Washington, Murray wasnt known as a very good defender.

Yeah Covington 1st team was a surprise. Didn’t even consider him. Is he really better than Giannis?

Also Eric Bledsoe, Westbrook and Lillard all got votes. Obviously not all the voters took this seriously

I tend to hear a lot about Robert Covington being a great defender based on advanced statistics. Based on the eye test I’d say he’s a good defender. I’ve never seen him lock anyone great down, but he’s nearly always matched with the opponents top offensive player with the exception of centers.

I actually don’t have a problem with draymond green not being on the first team. I think even including him in the second team could be somewhat questionable as he coasted through a large portion of the season and didn’t really bring his usual intensity night in and night out. Guys like josh Richardson, Kevin Durant, luc Mbah a moute, pj Tucker, Chris Paul, Klay Thompson, jaylen Brown all could have been considered imo.

Defensive awards are kind of tricky to judge because you are basically weighing reputation against stats and actual impact on the floor. In the past guys like Kobe would routinely make all-defensive teams just based on reputation. The analytical revolution has really changed the way we look at defensive impact all the selections this season reflect that for the most part so I don’t really have too many beefs.

So is Roco.  But he is second in the league deflected passes.  He is a product of Embiid patrolling the paint.  I would parlay Covington’s recent award and trade him in a package to get a star player.  Wasn’t even two weeks ago that Roco got benched for TJ McConnell.  Paul George can guard the other teams best player and fart out 20 pts. Covington would need two dozen ill advised shots to reach that output.

The first thing I noticed after seeing the list is Paul George being robbed. He was leading in steals for a good portion of the season.

Tied with Eric Bledsoe with 2.0 SPG, also in the top ten for steals per game: Westbrook and George. Not saying George isn’t a better defender than all these guys but it’s importance is a fraction of being a good overall defender

I agree.  Steals can be misleading as a defensive indicator.  You may gamble a lot (too much) on the passing lanes to gain steals.  It’s the same as someone who blocks a lot of shots, but puts themselves out of position in doing so.  I value a player that can stay infront of their opponent, causinge tough shots much more highly than steals/blocks

Jrue Holiday cemeted the best year of his career by getting All Defensive first team honours, He’d never been in the mix before so really improved his whole game this season. Ironically guarding the opposition SGs seems to suit him better than better than guarding PGs.

We could argue NOP are one of the best defensive teams in the NBA with both him and AD getting All First team nods.

Maybe having a someone like Rondo who is an excellent defender alongside him has really helped Jrue.

If there was a team for flopping, he’d be first team leading vote getter.
