    All Defense vs. All Offense

C:  Rudy Gobert vs. Demarcus Cousins

PF: Draymond Green vs. Kevin Durant

SF: Kawhi Leonard vs. Klay Thompson

SG: Jimmy Butler vs. James Harden

PG: Lebron James vs. Steph Curry

    Benches:

    CP3  –  Kyrie

    Avery Bradley – Dame Lillard

    Marcus Smart – Isiah Thomas

    Hassan Whiteside – Karl Towns

    Tony Allen – Devin Booker

I left off Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook because I couldn’t decide where they fit.  Cousins is more of a purer one sided player than Anthony Davis..

I gotta go defense.  Maybe they can make something like this the all-star game next year.

    Who’d I leave off?

where would you have him play?  This wasn’t a definitive list, thats why I asked who I left off…I just wasn’t sure where to leave people on and off.

I do think the All-Star game would be more interesting if it was:

      30s vs. 20s…

or USA vs. World like Ryder and President’s Cup…

or like this, Defense vs. Offense.  Maybe have the top 3 defensive players vs. the top 3 offensive players and have them build their own squads.

In theory, the all-offense team would beat the all-defense team every time, because you can win games without playing defense but you can’t win games if you can’t score; however, your all-defense team tremendous offensive talent as well…. Who would ever bet against a team with LBJ and Kawhi? Not I.

Kevin Durant is a top 15 DPOTY contender. His DRTG is higher than LeBron and I believe his DRPM is higher than Kawhi’s. He averages over a block a game and cause problems because the team he plays for has 3 rim protectors instead of the usual 2.

So much wrong with this list, CP3 arguably better than Kyrie at offense (passing is offense)

And like others said, Offense > Defense in basketball, and no one in the NBA is all of one none other the other

I 100% agree with this. It sucks that the narrative around Durant is that he’s an average defender when he makes way more impact on that end than Lebron does.

The phrase "he can guard positions 1 to 5" gets thrown around very loose at times. It’s been said in regards to guys like Joakhim Noah (yuck) to Lebron and Draymond. Yes in theory, and in stretches, Lebron and Draymond can guard some centers and point guards, but they too often lack the footspeed to guard smaller guards, and height to guard centers.

Durant is one guy who I consider can guard positions 1 through 5 mainly because when he’s guarding point guards, he has the luxury of sagging off and daring them to shoot because if they do, they are extremely bothered by his length. Giannis and Durant I feel are true game changers on D.

      I use stats as a tool to expose things I can’t see….

But to say Lebron isn’t one of the top 5 defensive players in the league is silly.  WHEN, he is locked in like in the playoffs, not only is he a great individual defensive player, but he sets the tone for his entire team.  Did you forget "the block", it defined his legacy, and won him a championship.

CP3 I put him on because he was an all-NBA defensive player last year.  Plus I was struggling to think of really good defensive point guards, you didn’t nominate anyone to take his place by the way.

CP3 to me has always been a little overrated because of his limitations in his size.  I think his leadership is overrated on the constantly underachieving Clippers.  I think other PGs like Schroeder are going to surpass him soon, the 2003 and 2004 guys are all aging anyway.

I guess my team is more skewed on offense for scoring more than passing, so Lebron is also a classic tweener.  Guys like him, Anthony Davis, Giannis, even Kawhi and Klay, and I guess KD, are all tweeners.  But I define Lebron and Kawhi more as defensive players than offense, and Giannis and Davis and Russ are so skilled at both ends, that I’m not sure where to put them.

One guy who has really impressed me on D this season is James Johnson, but he comes off the bench, so he doesn’t get as much hype as he deserves…

    Using ESPN’s RPM

    Offense (ORPM-DRPM)

PG: Isaiah Thomas (net 10.04 offense)

SG: James Harden (net 8.18 offense)

SF: Gordon Hayward (net 3.33 offense)

PF: DeMarcus Cousins (net 2.71 offense)

    C: KAT (net 4.56 offense)

Excluded: LeBron, Kawhi, KD, Jimmy Butler (positive DRPM, very high ORPM), Jokic (doesn’t play PF anymore, has reasonable DRPM)

    Defense (DRPM-ORPM)

PG: Patrick Beverley (net .98 defense)

SG: Tony Allen (net 4.23 defense)

SF: Robert Covington (net 4.78 defense)

PF: David West (net 4.95 defense)

C: Andrew Bogut (net 8.35 defense)

Excluded: Kyle Anderson (not a SG), Wesley Johnson (worse on D than Covington), Delon Wright and Fred van Fleet (not enough minutes), Kris Dunn & MCW (worse on D than Beverley)
