JoeWolf1I think it’s about time for him to start dropping in the mocks. I understand he had a very impressive summer and a lot of people got wind of him for the first time, but he is still vastly overrated. I was watching the CU vs Georgia game last night, and of anyone on the court last night I was impressed mostly with Travis Leslie ( damn that guy is explosive but unfortunately plays a lot like a 6’4” forward) but back to Burks, I get he has great size, is long and is a fluid athlete, but he has to show a lot more improvement if he hopes to crack the top 10 by next summer.
The only thing that really impressed me last night was his ability to get to the free throw line. He is a good slasher, can draw fouls, and hit the majority of his free throws, but he really needs to mature as an offensive player. His shot selection outside of the lane was pretty terrible, and his defense isn’t close to NBA ready. I know, this is a long season, but once Big 12 play hits he isn’t going to have any easier of a time than he did against Georgia and Idaho State.
Burks is a 15-25 pick, i’ve said it before and i’ll keep saying it until he is rightfully out of the top 10 on mocks. Not that Aran actually listens to me, but hey, i did the same thing with Brackins last year and eventually he was accurately rated.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI was afraid of rating him as the top SG, I felt like he had much more to prove. This class does seem kind of weak as far as wing players are concerned and for "true" SG’s, which I think was one reason he moved up so highly, plus he kind of came out of nowhere and had a very solid freshman year. He is a great athlete, but with a streaky J and who knows how well he will translate to the NBA as a 2 guard. I probably had him 15-20 already, but I think it is a good point to monitor his progress and rank him accordingly. If he puts up similar numbers too last year, I have a feeling he drops into the range you had for him Joe.

dude1955ParticipantSome of guys seem intelligent, can someone explain how in watching the game last night between University of Detroit vs Syracuse how Kris Joseph is projected 12 and had 3pts 3boards and 5fouls, Fab Melo is highly rated and had 2pts 0rbds, and Eli Holman is projected #52 and had 17pts 10rbds 2blcks( made jumpers, dunked on Fab Melo, and had no bench showed intelligence to pick his spots) But Melo has potential and is a year younger than Holman as a freshman, Holman is a junior and this is just his second year in college and didnt start playing basketball until his junior of HS??? How does that work?

JoeWolf1@mikeyvthedon
Yeah, when someone beats out Xavier Henry and Avery Bradley to win the Big 12 conference player of the year it caught people who maybe hadn’t seen him play much or maybe a couple times by surprise, but there really are a lot of flaws in his game and a season with a sub par Colorado team will further expose those. Still good size and a very good slasher, but flat out not a top 10 pick
@Iggy
Pretty decent first half, Georgia eventually pulled away. Higgins had an off night and Burks couldn’t take over, but again did a good job getting to the line, outside of those guys CO doesn’t have much. Travis Leslie, man, has to be one of my new favorite players though! So fun to watch.

JoeWolf1I’m not familiar with Eli Holman, except that somone mentioned him on here the other day ( that could have been you) but unfortuately playing for a smaller school does effect draft status. It’s often irrelevant as the player goes on to be a productive pro, but sometimes it’s an accurate gauge on effectiveness. I’ll just site Omar Samhan from last year, he was a near 7 footer and although slow and overweight, tore up higher ranked prospects from bigger schools, but despite his productivity he just wasn’t an NBA player aftr the season ended. And rightfully so, I can’t think of a single team he could play on.
Thats kind of just the nature of the beast. It isn’t always right, and I didn’t make the rules, but I’ve been following it long enough that a guy like Fab Melo is going to get crazy looks despite the fact he reeks of Patty O’Bryant, but there is that "chance" he’ll do something.
Some small school guys do what they do and will be fine. Kenneth Faried has the chance to be a late 1st round draft pick or early to mid 2nd rounder this year. Jeremy Lin had great non conference games against big programs and although he didn’t get drafted made a roster and gets like 2 steals a game evertime he gets in.
There is a light at the end of the tunnell for these small school guys, but right or wrong, thats just kind of the way things are, especially now in Novemeber. If Fab Melo, and Kris Joseph continue to not impress people, they will magically dis appear from 2011 drafts and appear on 2012 drafts in slightly lower positions 🙂

dude1955ParticipantYeah I agree but if you compete against the same guy I dont care. U of D is the same conference as Butler. I think this overhype of schools and the word potential is not a good thing for the game. Football has a ton of guys that went to small schools and can ball simple because they are talented and produced. Samhan was slow and not as athletic as Holman. The game I watched last night had the guard play been comparible to Cuse and he was able to get out of the game he would have had 20 and 10. I think these mocks should be a combo of potential(real potential), not some guy 20 years old in HS tearing it up, and production.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI wasnt too high on Burks..But i think he’s 1 of those players that will be better in the pros than in college..He reminds me of Eddie Jones..I was watching that Colorado-Georgia game last night..I Kept waiting for him to take the ball and attack the basket..That never happen ..Having him ranked in the top 10 is a bit too high..I’ll say he goes in the 14 to 25 range….
I think i was the person that mentioned Holman when someone made a post asking who are some unknown sleeper players..

butidonthavemoneyMaybe it’s just the Jazz fan inside of me…
But Burks plays like CJ Miles minus 30 pounds.
He’d be a good late first-rounder for a team like the Bulls or the Celtics.

butidonthavemoneyWhere have you been? I thought you were a Jazz fan.
CJ Miles weighs around 235 lbs (Source) and is very, very strong for a wingman. Last year, he even played some power forward. He didn’t have much success guarding Amare, but he put up a fight.

JNixonParticipantYeah C.J. Miles isn’t skinny. I do see some C.J. Miles in him though. More so the younger C.J. Miles though

JoeWolf1He reminds me of Kenny Gregory only Burks can hit a good clip of his free throws.
