Watched him some against the Lakers tonight and think he could break out this year. He has added some strength and looks like a big prototypical SG now. He plays hard, not always smart, but hard. Thoughts?

He’s probably going to start the season as the 6th man, but I can see him ending up the starting sg with Hayward sliding to the 3. He can deffenatly get to the foul line. And on a Jazz team that lost four of its five leading scorers from last season, he’ll get his chainz to put up some points this year.

He had a couple of nice passes during the stretch of the game that I watched. I keep waiting for him to start to fulfill his potential but he hasn’t been able to as of yet.
With Burke out, he will get more of an opportunity to run the offense which will help his overall development out immensely. I still think he was drafted too high but there’s no denying that the kid has a lot of untapped talent.

I hate how he always, ALWAYS goes away from the pick. It’s gross and breaks the offense. He played better last night, but looking at the box score doesn’t tell the whole story.

For the most part I think he’ll start but I think Brandon Rush will eventually take his job once his knee and confidence are back at 100%.

He may have bulked up and gained some vert this off-season, but I’ve been pretty unimpressed by him during the pre-season. His long range game seems to be about where it was last year, his efficiency is nothing impressive, and although it’s just 6 games I still see the same old Alec Burks who everyone predicts to break out this year and never does.
He was a nice prospect on paper, but from a guy who saw him a lot in college, I maintain he’s a functional starting SG for a lotto team at best, and a 2nd unit scoring punch for most teams in the NBA. I wouldn’t be shocked if he had a season or two scoring 12-14 ppg amid a majority of single digit scoring seasons, but when all is said and done he’s not worth his draft pick.
Maybe he’ll prove me wrong this year, but I just don’t see it.

  I agree with you. He’s skilled and athletic, but he’s never had the profile of a starter. His game really requires him to be one of the two best players in his unit to be effective, and he’s just not good enough to lead a team to the postseason or many postseason victories (such is the folly of dominating possessions; see Al Jefferson). If his shooting ability improves, he could be really effective in a sixth-man role. With a surrounding cast that can play off of others (thinking spot-up shooters, screeners, offensive rebounders, lob targets, etc…), Burks could play his game without cannibalizing his teammates.
  If the Jazz want to groom him into a starter, he’ll need to become a better shooter, improve his defense and find a consistent way to score that complements Hayward/Favors/Kanter (camping in the corner or curling off of the huge shoulders of Derrick Favors, for example). That being said, it’s never wise to expect a zebra to change his stripes.
