It pains me to see a defensive talent rot away on the bench as much as Aaron Gordon. And to make matters worse, Skiles is a defensive minded coach who has his team playing a top 10 brand of basketball on that end of the floor. Gordon could contribute even more to that success with an extra 7-8 minutes per game

So why isn’t Gordon getting on the floor? The past 6 games AG is averaging slightly over 15min per game, which is just too little for what he brings to the table. His Player Efficiency Rating (not a huge fan of the stat… but still noteworthy) is well above the league average at a tidy 18.41 on the season. He can switch onto perimeter players like butter in the P&R, has one of the fastest close-outs in the league, and probably the most underrated part of his game is how little he fouls. He’s a stud defensively.

Lastly, and somewhat unrelated, I’m concerned that Hezonja is getting the same treatment that Tobias Harris received during their stint in Milwaukee a few years back. I understand Orlando is prioritizing W’s right now over development, but Henzonja has been racking up frickin’ DNP’s as of late. Get this young gun some more minutes as well Scotty to at least see what you have!

doesn’t care about development. He cares about order, hard work and defense. Skiles and Henzonja is a really bad player/ coach match up.

Skiles and Gordon however, should be a match made in heaven…

Skiles is trash. Seriously. He benches their franchise player and their only player who consistently can create his own shot in Oladipo?? And not just bench, he plays him like for only 25 mins a game these games. And then after a solid showing by Hezonja in his first game, he sticks him in his doghouse for no reason at all. Fournier’s stock is fallling faster than anyone in the L and is a foul machine but still gets PT over Victor and Mario. Then he says he prioritizes D but starts Harris and Frye together instead of Gordon. This guy is a clown, get him outta there!! I don’t care if they’re winning SOME games right now, with that lineup, there’s no way you’re going anywhere far in this L. No consistent shot creator (Harris as no.1 option?? Yuck) aside from Vuc. Then you’re D sucks too. And I doubt the team chemistry will stick any longer if you bench you’re franchise player. FIRE SKILES PLEASE.

He is going to hinder his development. Trust me.

Luckily he just turned 20. But they need to figure it out soon.

Ive got no problem with teenagers on non-tanking teams riding the pine.

They’ll get their chance and will still learn from the bench.

Teenagers get injured easily in the NBA too.

He has a lot of talent and can produce in spurts, but the Magic are about the playoffs.

I knew posts like these would sprout up, so here’s what I wrote last week.

tl:dr version:  AG will play more when he earns it and surpasses whoever is ahead of him in the pecking order.  If he plays well when he’s in Skiles will let him play on.  That’s the type of coach he is.  He rewards good play and isn’t afraid of trying different combinations.

    —————————————————————————-

Now we hear grumblings about player development with AG and Hezonja’s minutes getting cut. Please, Skiles is developing the TEAM. If you’re a Magic fan and you’re happy about them competing, then don’t complain. Again, this is what Skiles was brought in for. He doesn’t hand out entitlement minutes. Hezonja’s raw and if AG wants to see an uptick in minutes he’ll have to play better than Andrew Nicholson, who’s play is another big reason for their turn around. Skiles will give players opportunities to earn minutes as was the case with Nicholson who had been previously buried by JV. What a novel concept. Players actually earning minutes instead of just being handed them because of where they were drafted.

      —————————————————————————–

Also, Magic’s defense has been much better since Skiles has made those adjustments to the rotation (Frye starting, VO to the bench and playing Nicholson more.)

There’s also the issue of Gordon getting nicked up a lot and missing games/practices because of them.  I know just recently he’s coming off of another ankle injury.

Skiles is a very good development coach.  We’re under 2-months into his first season with the team. Relax.
