Agent: Thomas heading to Dallas
Free-agent forward Tim Thomas is scheduled to be in Dallas on Tuesday for a face-to-face meeting with Mavericks officials that will likely lead to a contract offer for the 12-year veteran.

No deal has been finalized, but the Mavericks have coveted Thomas as an off-the-bench shooter all summer to add some perimeter punch to their second unit.

“We’re hoping to complete a deal soon,” Bob Myers, Thomas’ agent, told ESPN.com.

The Mavericks initially thought they were acquiring Thomas earlier this month in the four-team trade that netted Shawn Marion. The Chicago Bulls, according to sources with knowledge of the talks, had agreed to be part of the trade involving Toronto and Memphis — with Thomas bound for Dallas — but changed their minds and pulled out. The Bulls were replaced in that trade by Orlando and later bought out Thomas’ contract when they couldn’t plug him into another deal.

Thomas was due to make $6.5 million next season in the final year of his contract before the buyout. He was traded twice last season, going from the Los Angeles Clippers to the New York Knicks in a trade for Zach Randolph in December and from New York to Chicago in February as part of the Larry Hughes deal.

Thomas has averaged 11.6 points and 4.1 rebounds for his career. He has hit 37 percent of the 3-pointers he has taken in his career and ranks 63rd all-time with 946 made from beyond the arc.

Thomas has made numerous stops in the NBA. Drafted in the first round by the Nets, he was traded to Philadelphia before playing a game for New Jersey. He went on to play for the Bucks, Knicks, Bulls, Suns and Clippers.

After striking a one-year deal for a guaranteed $4.5 million Sunday with free-agent forward Drew Gooden, Dallas has roughly $1.4 million left of its midlevel exception to spend on free agents as well as its $1.9 million bi-annual exception.

Has a team with Dirk Won a championship? You guys can spin off your what ifs, but I’m just stating straight facts. Here’s one though, If Kobe, Shaq, Malone, Payton can’t win one how could any team constructed around Dirk do so. The Mavericks biggest flaw is in dirk. He hurts them more than helps them/. As long as Cuban has Dirk under contract neither of them will taste the sweet taste of victory.

cp3 and melo are stil very young players and both are in the west so id watch them once tim duncan and kobe are gone

nash is gettin old very fast it seems but if the whole dirk theroy is true lets not forget nash and dirk were teammates for about 6 seasons and ever since nash got to phx they have been good…real good they should have gone to the finals the year amare got suspended against the spurs

ima have to agree with you about dirk. i been saying that for years. that dallas will never win with dirk. yeah hes 7ft who can shoot. but he cant defend, block or rebound like a big man is suppose to. plus hes physical and mentally weak. hes the reason why dallas lost the ship to miami and the first round loss to golden state.

Dirk is a great individual talent, but when it comes to the team game of basketball he will never have the tenacity to win a title. Dallas is just always on the short end of the stick no matter whose been on that roster. You can blame Jason Kidd, Antwain Jamison, and the rest of the players that have gone in and out of this team, but it’s always been Dirk there from the get go.

The whole Chris Paul argument over Dirk is a Joke. Paul has maybe a slice of minutes in these league compared to anyone else on that lists cake.

okay getting to the finals means nothing these days unless you won it. look at my magic this year. yeah we went to the finals but are we going around saying we played the lakers in the finals like we are proud to be runner ups .no. so what im saying is just because dirk took them their doesnt mean nothing after you was up what 2 games up and lost it to miami.

I was simply stated they wouldn’t have had the chance to be in the Finals without him nor would they have been the number 1 seed the next year without him. No one said he was proud of being a runner up.

Theirs certain people that play for the passion of the game and as much as the NBA market want’s to advertise Dirk as one of these players I think It’s a far cry from the truth. It’s all about the Money to him. Cuban’s pocket’s are endless and will drop dead to everyone of his commands. The thought that they want to trade a guy like Josh Howard over Dirk is a joke in my mind. Howards a perfect 3rd option on this team.

The problem is when it comes to having a post presence I’d take my chances with a Farmers Scarecrow over Dirk. It’s the whole intimidation factor. Dirk is just soft when it comes to being a legit power forward in the NBA.

Well then I have to hear the argument that “oh no he’s a 7ft small forward.” Please for anyone that has been living under a rock the last decade what has gotten teams out of the western conference? Solid and down right dominate big man play. Spurs 99,03,07 Lakers 00,01,02,04,05,08,09 Mavericks 06.

When it comes to the 3 “dominant big man presences,” that came out of the western conference I rank them Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’neal, and then Dirk Nowitzki. The fact that Dallas made it to the Finals with Dirk as their only legitimate big man on their roster is a joke. The game is won inside of the paint and outside of the perimeter. So wait a second… Dirks a PF that plays inside, but has a great 3 point shot right? So that’s why they made it to the finals right? Hardly…

To anyone that doesn’t think Dirk is soft in terms of being a legitimate big man presence in the NBA probably thinks Javelle Mcgee could start for the Western conference All star team. I’m also going go on the record and say those same people think Hasheem Thabeet is a star waiting to happen.

That whole Mavericks roster is pampered like 10 year old only child’s. It’s quite pathetic that aside from jersey and ticket sales Mark Cuban can’t get a reimbursement for the product that he’s put out on the floor. As long as Dirk is on that roster he will not win a championship. Plain and simple, I don’t understand how that’s something so drastic to fathom.

I think Dirk will never win one as a FIRST option. If he ever lands on a team, or gets a player on his team, where he can be the number 2, he would be dangerous. Pair the guy with Wade or Lebron (just sayin) and he is a great player.

He is not the most ideal main man, but he can be the best player on a title team. You just have to have a lot of help around him. He is soft, but he does some work on the boards, and he is a matchup nightmare on offense. Great dominant bigs are rare, and most teams don’t have one. Also to Auber, the comparison of the Lakers not winning with Kobe, Shaq, Malone, and Payton is a bad example. That team was at each others throats and had given up playing as a team. Malone did not play in the Finals which was a huge setback. Payton was a shell of his former self, especially in the finals where he went AWOL.

I think that Dirk would be a great 2nd option because as a #1 option he just does not do it for me he is kinda soft to be 7 foot and he shoots way to many jumpshots like most of the players that come from overseas and i agree with what was said he will never win a championship as long as he is the 1st option.
