BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantAgent David Falk has represented some of the best NBA players ever, including center Patrick Ewing, scoring guard Allen Iverson and now-Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan.
So he knows the draft, and Falk says the 2012 draft will fall off precipitously after a single pick.
“This is a one-player draft,’’ Falk told the Observer on Monday, referring to Kentucky freshman big man Anthony Davis. “Picks two through eight, there’s not a lot of separation. There’s just not a lot of difference between (Michael Kidd-) Gilchrist, (Andre) Drummond or (Harrison) Barnes.
“A lot of teams will be looking to trade down because the difference from two through eight is minuscule.’’
After finishing with the worst winning percentage in NBA history, the 7-59 Bobcats will have the most chances in the May 30 draft lottery. But that still gives them only a 25 percent chance at the top pick. They are guaranteed a top-four pick in the June 28 draft.
Falk, who no longer represents Jordan, said the Bobcats did the right thing by deconstructing the team that went to the playoffs in 2010 with Gerald Wallace, Boris Diaw and Stephen Jackson. But now, Falk said, the Bobcats have to get lucky just the way the San Antonio Spurs were in getting the top pick when Tim Duncan was available in 1997.
Falk said Jordan has always been a risk-taker, as in when he tried to play minor-league baseball during a hiatus from his NBA career in 1994.
Falk said this was the right risk, as opposed to limping along with a veteran team that was swept out of its only playoff appearance by the Orlando Magic.
“This process needed to happen,’’ Falk said. “They’re not trying to run on a patched-up tire. Now they’re getting a new tire.’’
“Step one is admitting you’re bad. But the good news is, in the NBA if you get to draft that one guy and you sign a decent free agent, you’re two-thirds of the way there’’ to viable.
Falk runs a relative small business now, with about a dozen clients. His two first-round prospects in the June draft are former Duke freshman Austin Rivers and former Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger.

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantI think Terrence Ross may have a better career than most of the players taken in the Top 10 outside of Davis…

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantAustin Rivers will be a Boston Celtic by hook or by crook, The Celtics have 2 first rounders and can move up to draft the coaches Son, Ray Allen looks like he’s on his last tank of gas, The dream for Celtics fans would be to keep both picks and hope Rivers is there when they pick 1st and hope one of the Sf’s with potential is still available with the second pick(Harkless or Q.Miller)
Second, I can see Cleveland drafting Jared Sullinger, he and Kyrie would be a very good Pg/Pf combo IMO, they can find a Sg in Free Agency or with the late first rounder they own, If I were them I’d draft Sullinger and sign OJ Mayo in FA, see what players are there in the late 1st and take the BPA or fill a need…

Memphis MadnessParticipantI wouldn’t necessarily disagree. Anthony Davis is the top buy — by far. Then the next few guys are all good — not much difference in talent level — but the players fit will make the difference.
I think Falk means that there is maybe only one guy with superstar potential, and that the other guys may turn into all-stars or close, but probably not superstars.
I think that MKG is a heck of a talent. Had a great freshman season. He has upside.
After the top 8-10 there are some more good solid players. Then after 20 or so it turns into a stock picker’s draft with some steals in there somewhere in the second round.
If Falk thinks, hey only Anthony Davis has Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett potential then I agree with that.
Hopefully whoever drafts him uses AD effectively. I am worried about him with the Bobcats if they get the first pick. Not sure that that is the best organization or team for him.

SpacegrassParticipantThat’s what I said before , if I am a team and I don’t get the 1st pick just give me the 5th or 6th pick and I will take who is left out of MKG , Drummond , Barnes , Robinson , and Beal.

sheltwon3ParticipantEvery year people put this kind of info out. The thing is no one knows. I would say this is a deep draft and you could find the best player in the draft from 1 to 15. Davis is getting the most hype but it is not like he had a Durant, Beasley, or Oden college career stat wise.

Memphis MadnessParticipantLegendary Poster,
If I were the Cavs I would go after Eric Gordon. He could be the 2 guard of the future and a 20 point scorer. Then with the 3rd pick get MKG to be the high-motor, energy, do-everything small forward. That would give them three great perimeter players. A great 3 man core for the future. Tristan Thompson is the power forward with Andy Varejao being a hard-nosed center.
That team would be a big improvement, then next year they could add some frontcourt scoring. The Cavs could use their second round pick on either a backup big man or a shooter at the 3 spot.
I like MKG’s upside. Good resume too with a great freshman year and an NCAA title. He would be a perfect fit next to a high scoring backcourt that can knock down jumpers and a high-energy frontcourt that can rebound.
The Cavs need to think about building their team like the Thunder. A great Big Three on the perimeter and some solid inside players (Ibaka is an athletic four, K Perk is a hard-nosed 5, with Collison and Cole Aldrich off the bench).
In the second round they could go with Festus Ezeli who plays center, or Fab Melo if he drops a lot. Or Draymond Green if he falls. Darius Miller might be a good role player/shooter at the wing off the bench. He might be available when the Cavs pick in the second round. It looks like they have 2 high second round picks so they can get some talent there. But, they would be better off filling out there core this offseason with Eric Gordon and Kidd-Gilchrist and then go after role players to fill in their other spots in the next few years when they have late lotto and mid-first round picks.

B-ball fanParticipantIs it just me, or is Austin Rivers not a great fit for the Celtics? Sure, his father is the coach, which could be good or bad, but just style of play wise he doesn’t seem to be the Celtics’ type of player. The Celtics rely on a high level of offensive execution and run an offense reliant on ball movement. Rivers is a player who is great at cutting off the ball and prefers to shoot off the dribble. He also strikes me as a bit of a ball stopper. I also don’t see him as a great fit on the Celtics’ potent secondary break, which basically pits Rondo as the playmaker and others as finishers. If the Celtics move up, I would hope it was for a big, if anybody, but I hope they just keep their picks. I would rather the Celtics drafted Miller, who can score in isolation like Rivers, but is a better spot up shooter and seems more willing to go with the flow on offense, considering that Miller will likely fall to them with their first round picks.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipanthttp://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2012/05/upcoming_nba_draft_considered.html
Although next month’s NBA draft is considered to be deep with talent, New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams disagrees. With two lottery picks, the Hornets are slotted fourth and 10th in the May 30 draft lottery and have a 13.7 percent chance of landing the top pick.
“I don’t see this deep draft everybody is talking about,’’ Williams said. “I think there are a few players at the top that are really good that can be good players. But I don’t see any Carmelos or LeBrons.’’
Kentucky power forward Anthony Davis is considered to be the best available player and is expected to be the No. 1 pick.
Most mock drafts have Davis, Kansas’ Thomas Robinson, Connecticut’s Andre Drummond, Kentucky’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes and Florida’s Bradley Beal are considered to be the top six players available.
“I don’t think you’re going to find a (Manu) Ginobili at 52,’’ Williams said. “The last few weeks I’ve had a chance to look at all these young guys on tape and I’m not jaded by the hoopla as everybody else is. I think there are good players, but I don’t see this deep draft.’’

Sewok15ParticipantThat is why you are the hornets Monty. You could make a team out of all second round picks from last years draft, that was no way as good as this one, that could be better than New Orleans. I really hope they don’t get the # 1 pick…but the league owes them after this CP3 fiasco.
