Who would you have drafted in the lotto as the Cavs GM?  Hindsight is 20/20 so be honest. Who would you have drafted post Lebron with the lottery picks?

2011: 1) Kyrie Irving – was a little bit of a shock as Derrick Williams had a great year but never was a huge fan of his. Kyrie played great in his few games at Duke and still had good high school hype. 4) Jonas Valunciunas – Wasn’t a prototypical Euro big man. Would score in the low post and bang a bit.

2012: 4) Harrison Barnes- Cleveland needed wings going into this draft. They took Waiters but most questioned the pick. I did too. Not because Waiters is bad but because it was a reach at 4. With Bradley Beal gone I would’ve taken Harrison Barnes. Instant starter at the 3 for Cleveland. Now have your 1-3-5 positions filled nicely.

2013: 1) Victor Oladipo- May have went McLemore here but enough shootinat the 1 and 3 to fit a nice defender and up and coming offensive player in Victor. This would add another good perimeter defender to the lineup.

2014) just to have fun. Who would you draft this year at their current spot of 8? 8) Rodney Hood- didn’t have a PF in that range at the moment that I like. Think Noah Vonleh would fit well on that team but he’s not on the board in the current mock. So I went with Hood who can spell both Barnes and Oladipo. And go small with Barnes at the 4. That’s a solid core of 5 guys.

Point of this is to show that even without reaching for good players later in the draft that Cleveland could’ve had much better players at their picks than they drafted reaching for guys.

Would like to add that I had Andre Drummond 1 on my draft board in  2012 but as I took Jobss the year before I didn’t select a other C.

Sorry I’m not on all the time. Though it would be a little different. Like would you be looking for a job today if you were in his shoes from 2011 on? Thanks for the amazing insight on the topic though. 🙂

Well NBAdraft.net is pretty consistent with the once a week Cavs draft thread, but yours is a little different saying what would you have done instead of what they could have had.

In 2011 I was pissed they didn’ take Val, but Thompson has been better than expected.

In 2012 I wanted them to take Lillard, but thought they would take Barnes if he was there. I thought Lillard had enough size to play the two guard in the NBA and thought he was going to be a stud in the NBA. Drummond was a question mark, but I never even considered them taking Waiters.

In 2013 I was 100% for them taking Oladipo with the 1st pick. I actually had Bennett sliding all the way to 8th on draft day. The jury is still out on Bennett because the potential is still there, but it looks terrible at this time.

These threads make me soooooo mad!

Teams do not plan to be awful for so long. The Cavs did not know they would have had such a good lottery placement? In 2011 with 2 top 4 picks (one #1) you don;t expect to be so bad.

Look at this year, everyone, well mostly everyone I would say had the Suns to be in prime position of the lotto.

and why does everyone always take Jonas at 4 instead of TT?

TT is 14th in the league for big men double doubles with 22?

    Jonas has has 17.

I don’t see why it is such a no brainer for Cavs to pick him at 4 anyway?

I also don’t think Waiters is ‘bad’. I still think he is a great player and will have a really good carrer. I would say the fit was not right next to Kyrie not that Waiters is ‘bad.

and you say hindset is 20/20 but then give a full list of players you would have picked?

End these threads please. They are awful.

well I have not clicked on too many cav draft threads, so this is new for me.

    I will be honest

this past 2013 draft, I was leaning towards alex len, but like everyone else I knew it was just a toss up amongst the top 5-6 guys. I just figured that mclemore and oladipo played the same position as waiters and there was no guarantee they would be any better. I hated noel’s offensive game and the injuries on top of that scared me off. Didn’t like the fact Bennett was limited defensively due to height and was basically climbing boards due to being inactive during the whole pre draft process.

I figured len was a legit big man who could be a solid center at worst and those guys are always valued.

I don’t remember who I leaned towards going further back but do remember I was very surprised to hear both waiters and Thompson get picked as high as they did.

Yeah I have to confess I would have gone Len also. Last year I had 1. Len 2. MCW 3. Oladipo. 4. Bennett

2011 #1: I’d have picked Kyrie. Just BPA.

2011 #4: I’d have picked Val. Again, BPA. Great size, good hands, good kid, all those big man traits that are apparently unteachable. He also seemed to have potential to be a very good post player/finisher with a decent mrayjay.

2012 #4: I’d have picked Drummond. I just didn’t trust any of the other guys and didn’t really like the draft, so I’d have swung at upside. Not saying "Oh yeah I called Drummond #4 I’m so smart LOLOL," I’m just saying disliked him the least. In the first year I’d have traded Andy V and then platooned Val and Drummond at the 5, while occasionally experimenting Val at the 4 and Dre at the 5, trying to get a two towers going. If that didn’t work, I’d have traded Val when I saw that Drummond was better.

2013 #1: Without my other revised picks, I’d have picked Len #1, but having drafted two centers in a row, I’d have gone Oladipo because I wouldn’t have had the balls to go MCW, and because he’s be an ideal backcourt mate for Kyrie.

I haven’t been on this site for a while so these threads don’t bother me so much 🙂

    1. a  Kyrie  1b not sure because I wanted Williams or Kanter

    2.  Andre Drummond- I saw one a couple games of him in college and knew he had special athleticism.

    3.  McLemore-  love his shooting stroke and is a much better compliment to Kyrie

    4.  I would probably go the safe pick in Hood, but James Young has more upside.

this is gonna sound like complete BS but….

    kyrie irving

    andre drummond

For sure Nerlens Noel had i not picked Andre, but Andre was super obvious to me. giannis adetokunbo I was a huge fan, this kid highlights he looked ridiculous. Or maybe kentavious Caldwell pope. But Gianni’s showed ridiculous potential and I like potential, fit well throwing lobs to Drummond and spotting Kyrie for three.

noah vonleh or Gary Harris. Vonleh stretches, Gary as well, they fit well and are my favorite two realistical players at that spot, if Julius falls, take him.

At the end of day, people do their mocks according to who you think that team is going to pick. You are basically guessing how high teams are on players. In my board Gianni’s drops to 18 or 19, as a GM I would’ve taken him top 5, he just looked completely ridiculous, with a sick African body while being the youngest player in the draft and getting Scottie pippen comparisons from NBA players or coaches if I remember correctly, I just thought the potential he brought to the table was ridiculous, but I honestly didn’t think teams would take a fly on him in the lottery, much less top 5.
